On the 7th of January 1928, 80 years ago, Bernie Cummins and his Orchestra made a record for Brunswick featuring two tunes: When You're With Somebody Else and Lonely Melody. These recordings were released on Brunswick 3772.
Bernie Cummins ( March 1900 - September 1986) directed an orchestra, that was one of those typical 1920s dance bands, that were responsable for the dance craze in the so-called Roaring Twenties. There were a lot of those typically dance bands of the period, normally featuring three brass instruments, two reeds, a violin, a piano, banjo, bass or tuba and drums. The music they played could be described as a kind of jazzy dance music, sometimes hot, sometimes sweet, music to suit all tastes, in a commercial style - pop music we would say, modern "dance music", like the jump-style nowadays, popular among the youth.
If you like this kind of music and you're anxious to hear more music of Bernie Cummins you should try to find a copy of the great Timeless Historical CD Bernie Cummins and his Orchestra ( 1924 - 1930 ), which contains 26 tracks from the 1920s, released by great famous labels like Gennett, Brunswick, Victor and Perfect or a cheap budget label as Cameo.
What I like about the late 1920s Bernie Cummins tunes, are the ones with a band vocal in it. To be honest - this fascinates me from the period I was a teenager, maybe born as an interest for groups like The Rhyhtm Boys ( featuring Bing Crosby) or The Mills Brothers. These men were professionals. I like to see how some of the players in a band (it could be the brass section) stand up, a bit embarrassed, and start to sing a collective verse, expressing with their bodies a feeling that learns that singing-was-not-their-first-choice-when-they-entered-the-band. After the vocal part, they sit down, visibly relieved, and play the next chorus as if they want to deny to have been reponsable for the singing. You can hear such a band vocal trio (with Bernie Cummins, Walter Cummins, his brother and Paul Roberts ) in the eighty years old tune Lonely Melody.
The two celebrated tunes. mentioned above, When You're With Somebody Else and Lonely Melody, are not on the Timeless Historical CD, which features a lot of the well known Bernie Cummins hits, like Make My Cot Where The Cot Cot Cotton Grows, Minnie The Mermaid ( A Love Song In Fish Time ), Be Carefull With Those Eyes, Mysterious Mose and Cheer Up, the typically depression song, I mentioned in a previous blog. All above mentioned tunes have such a band vocal or vocal trio, so you can understand why this Timeless reissue is one of my favorites.

Op 7 januari 1928, 80 jaar geleden, nam het orkest van Bernie Cummins (maart 1900-september 1986) een plaat op voor Brunswick met daarop twee nummers getiteld When You're With Somebody Else en Lonely Melody. Deze twee platen zijn uitgebracht op Brunswick 3772.
Bernie Cummins and his Orchestra was één van die typische dansorkesten uit de jaren twintig, die een product waren van de Roaring Twenties; de tijd van de dansgekte onder de jeugd. Er waren in die tijd een heleboel van dit soort dansbands, meestal bestaande uit drie koperinstrumenten, twee rietinstrumenten, een viool, een piano, banjo, bas of tuba en slagwerk. Je kunt hun muziek het best omschrijven als jazzy dansmuziek, soms hot, soms ook sweet - voor elk wat wils, commercieel gericht - popmuziek dus, te vergelijken met de moderne dance-music voor de jeugd, waarop de jump gedanst wordt. Als je dit soort muziek leuk vindt en je wilt meer horen van de muziek van Bernie Cummins, dan kom je al snel terecht bij een schitterende uitgave op het Timeless Historical label , getiteld Bernie Cummins and his Orchestra ( 1924 - 1930 ), welk een 26-tal nummers bevat uit de jaren twintig, ooit uitgebracht op beroemde labels als Gennett, Brunswick, Victor, Perfect of een budget label als Cameo.
Wat ik zo leuk vind aan deze muziek uit de jaren twintig in het algemeen en aan die van Bernie Cummins in het bijzonder, is de collectieve band-zang. Eerlijk gezegd heb ik die fascinatie, denk ik, al vanaf mijn jeugd, wellicht opgewekt door het luisteren naar groepen als de Rhythm Boys met Bing Crosby of de Mills Brothers. Deze mannen waren professionele zangers. Wat me aansprak in bands zoals die van Bernie Cummins was dat moment dat leden van de band, bijvoorbeeld de koperblazers, collectief opstonden, zich ietwat generend, samen een couplet van het nummer zingend, met zo'n houding van laat-mij-maar-gewoon-blazen-dan-doe-je-al-gek-genoeg om daarna, zichtbaar opgelucht, op het juiste moment op hun instrumenten in te vallen met de chorus. Zo'n collectief moment, in dit geval een zangtrio uit de band ( met Bernie Cummins, zijn broer Walter Cummins en Paul Roberts ) hoor je terug halverwege het nummer Lonely Melody, dat tachtig jaar geleden werd opgenomen.
De twee jubilerende nummers, die ik eerder noemde, When You're With Somebody Else en Lonely Melody, staan beide niet op de Timeless Historical CD ( CBC 1-058), maar wel een heleboel andere nummers, waarmee Bernie Cummins hits oogste in de jaren twintig, zoals Make My Cot Where The Cot Cot Cotton Grows, Minnie The Mermaid ( A Love Song In Fish Time ), Be Carefull With Those Eyes, Mysterious Mose en Cheer Up, het over de Depressie geschreven nummer, dat ik al eens uitvoerig besprak. Al die nummers, die ik hiervoor opsomde, hebben zo'n zangtrio of een collectieve zang-uitbarsting van de leden van de band. Heerlijk toch !! Daarom is voor mij deze CD van Timeless één van mijn favorieten.
