Paquito d'Rivera

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

The Paquito d' Rivera CD Tico Tico was one of my first aquaintances with his music and to be honest .. .. I liked it.
Born in 1948 in Havana (Cuba) he played as a child with the Havana Municipal Band. He met Chucho Valdes while in conservatory and became one of the founders of the group Irakere. He left Cuba and now lives in New York. He played with Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner and, according to the liner notes of the CD, he loves to play with Claudio Roditi.

Both Chucho Valdes as Claudio Roditi played at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club (Terneuzen - The Netherlands) - Chucho was part of Roy's Crisol band and Roditi was here with his trio.

The liner notes of the album are very interesting as Paquito tells about the fact, that a lot of western people don't know how rich the Latin American music culture is. They have heard of Carmen Miranda or La Bamba, or la Cucaracha. They don't think South American music is very serious. For most jazz men, Latin American music is samba, but there is so much more. You've got to go back to the roots and listen to the music. Study it. Like a cook. You must know about all the ingredients individally to mix them well, to put them together in the right combination and get the best from all. You can't take music superficially. So this album is a way for me to demonstrate that there is a litle more Latin music than people dancing around with bananas and pineapples on their heads. Paquito d'Rivera mixes Brazilian Chorinho, cuban Danza's, Argentinean Tango and Milonga and Venezuzuelanc waltzes.
There are some great tunes in this album. Tico Tico with d'Rivera on clarinet (this one is not in your extensive 58-tunes compilation, Joergen !!), but also two Venezuelan waltzes with Tiberto Nascimiento on guitar. The album ends with Claudio Roditi's Recife's Blue. A great album

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
