Red Norvo - Just a Mood
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Just a Mood
Some musicians need a lot of notes, a lot of rhythm, a lot of musical jokes and a lot of noise to be noticed. Their music is obstrusive, played too fast or too loud, or too complicated to be enjoyable !
Last night I played myself some Red Norvo recordings.
18th of January 1957 - 50 years ago - at the Radio Recorders studios in Hollywood. Six gentlemen. Red Norvo with his giant vibraphone, Harry Edison, nicknamed Sweet , Ben Webster, with Ol' Betsy, his beloved tenor saxophone, Bob Carter with his bass and Bill Douglas with the brushes.
Six men - four tunes:
- Just a Mood
- Easy on the Eye
- The Night is Blue
- Sunrise Blues
The atmosphere is relaxed, their music is relaxed. The sharp high notes of Harry Edison and the smooth hishes from Websters Ol' Betsy. The brushes of Bill Douglas and the clear notes of Red's vibe.
Swing as it has to be played. Just a Mood.
I found a fragment from a 1960 performance featuring Red Norvo and Benny Goodman titled When Swing Was King. Enjoy it.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
Just a Mood
Zes heren.
Zes mannen - vier nummers:
- Just a Mood
- Easy on the Eye
- The Night is Blue
- Sunrise Blues
Swing zoals swing hoort te zijn; Just a Mood.
