Introducing Kenny Cox

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
One of my favorite series in jazz-reissues is the Blue Note Connoisseur CD Series, a limited edition of rare, forgotten recordings from its archives that never became hits. When I find one at a fair or in a record shop: I'll buy it, even if the performers are unknown to me. These reissues are like a bottle of wine. Some taste very well, from the very beginning; others need some time to ripe, before they taste well.
Some weeks ago I found the album Introducing Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet (Blue Note 385189), in fact a compilation of two late 1960s albums, titled Introducing, like the title of the reissue and the album Multidirection. Really, I'd never heard of this Kenny Cox, who was a piano player. Born in Detroit November 1940, he learned to play the piano, although he prefered the trumpet. He went to the Detroit Conservatory of Music. He played a lot of gigs ( he started when he was 5 years old !) with musicians like Yusef Lateef, Charles McPherson and Hugh Lawson until 1961. In that year he moved to New York and toured for three years with vocalist Etta Jones, he accompanied at the piano. In 1964 he returned to Detroit and played with Roland Kirk. Around that period he started his own group with musicians like Charles Moore, a trumpet player who was the leader of one of the first avant-garde groups of Detroit, the D.C. Five. He was influenced at that time by Miles Davis, while Kenny Cox was more a Bud Powell and Herbie Hancock supporter. Another guy in the group was Leon Henderson; he played, like brother Joe, the tenor saxophone. Ron Brooks is to be heard at the bass and he was "the old man" in the group, 33 years old. Danny Spencer, he is the odd man out with his look as if he is our Dutch crown prince Willem-Alexander; he played the drums.
These two LPs are the only ones made by this group for Blue Note ( he made some records early 1970s for other labels too ) and they are played by a solid and tight combo. For me the first one, Introducing, is the best - the second one Multidirection, feels more like, as they label it in the a review, like a collection of sketches. Great music. Really, this is one of those bottles of wine, stored on a shelf near the ground floor, with a bad designed label, ignored by the ordinary wine drinker, but being recognized as a very good wine by the true connoisseur. It is one of my smash hits of the year.

Kenny Cox seems to be still active in performing in the Detroit environment and recorded with musicians like James Carter. Isn't it nice to learn that James Carter is playing tonight in Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, omly 15 km. from my house? It's a small world...........

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
