Göta River Jazzmen

Thanks to Ingemar Wågerman I received a CD with samples of the Göta River Jazzmen from Sweden. This band is based in Göteborg, a harbour at the Kattegat, the water between Denmark and Sweden. The music the band plays was originated in the city of New Orleans at the Gulf of Mexico, early XXth Century. Maybe it's a coincidence, that both cities are harbours; fact is that the music they play is the original New Orleans style. The members of the band are Esbjörn Olsson on the trumpet, Lars Ehnström on trombone, Sverker Nyström plays the clarinet and alto saxophone, Göran Möller plays the banjo, Ingemar Wågerman the piano, Bertil Boström bass and Lars Gunnar Röök drums.
The Göta River Jazzmen made nine CDs up to now and their last one is a live CD from Burke. I played myself the tune I Get The Blues When It Rains with an intro by Ingemar Wågerman in free tempo, before it starts up with a collective improvisation; typically for the New Orleans style. This tune is to be found on the live album In The Good Old Summertime, recorded in July 2003 in Bude, Cornwall (England), made during a concert at the Falcon hotel. I liked some other tunes I received from Ingemar like Mobile Stomp, recorded June 2000 for the album The Other Side of Town and the tune There's Yes, Yes in Your Eyes. This band has performed several times in the Netherlands, like in Eindhoven at the Eindhovense Jazzclub, Appingendam ( Jazz Club Noord Nederlands Jazz Gilde ), Jazz Hall´72 in Gorinchem, the Charlestown Jazz Club in Molenhoek and the Jazz-Sociëteit Zutphen in Warnsveld.
The album Darkness On The Delta was recorded during its trips between 2002 and 2005 to our country with registrations from concerts in the Jazz-Sociëteit Zutphen in Warnsveld, a village in the eastern part of The Netherlands. It is said that this band belongs to the best in New Orleans Jazz in Europe and if you have a chance to listen to its music, visit its concerts or try to get one of its albums.

Dankzij Ingemar Wågerman ontving ik een verzamel CD met opnamen van de Zweedse band, de Göta River Jazzmen. Deze band heeft zijn thuisbasis in Göteborg, een havenstad aan het Kattegat, het water met een naam, dat als kind al fascineerde, tussen Zweden en Denemarken. De muziek die de band speelt komt origineel uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw uit de stad New Orleans, eveneens een havenstad aan de Golf van Mexico. Misschien is het toeval dat beide steden havensteden zijn; feit is dat de band in de New Orleans stijl speelt. De leden van de band zijn: Esbjörn Olsson op trompet, Lars Ehnström op trombone, Sverker Nyström op de klarinet en altsax, Göran Möller op de banjo, Ingemar Wågerman piano, Bertil Boström bas en Lars Gunnar Röök slagwerk.
De Göta River Jazzmen hebben tot nu toe negen CDs gemaakt onder eigen naam en nog werk op verzamel-CDs. Hun laatste is een live CD opgenomen in Burke. Ik heb genoten van het nummer I Get The Blues When It Rains met een intro op piano door Ingemar Wågerman in een vrij tempo, dat, na een tijdje van start gaat met een collectieve improvisatie op klarinet, trombone en trompet. Typisch New Orleans zou ik zeggen. Het nummer komt van de live CD In The Good Old Summertime, uit juli 2003 in Bude, Cornwall (Engeland), opgenomen tijdens een concert in het Falcon hotel. Er waren nog meer nummers die me boeiden zoals Mobile Stomp, opgenomen in juni 2000 voor de plaat The Other Side of Town en het nummer There's Yes, Yes in Your Eyes; allemaal nummers gespeeld op die typische relaxt swingende manier, die zo kenmerkend is voor deze stijl. Ze speelden verschillende keren in Nederland, zoals in Eindhoven in de Eindhovense Jazzclub, Appingendam ( Jazz Club Noord Nederlands Jazz Gilde ), Jazz Hall´72 in Gorinchem, in de Charlestown Jazz Club in Molenhoek en de Jazz-Sociëteit Zutphen in Warnsveld.
De plaat Darkness On The Delta is tijdens zo'n Nederlandse tournee opgenomen tussen 2002 en 2005 tijdens concerten in de Jazz-Sociëteit Zutphen in Warnsveld, een dorp tegen Zutpen aan. Er wordt gezegd dat in Europa deze Zweedse band tot het beste in haar stijl behoort en als je de kans krijgt om een optreden van hen bij te wonen, moet je dat zeker een keer doen. En anders probeer je gewoon hun platen te pakken te krijgen.
