They lovingly nicknamed me "jazz nerd"

Mr. Rollins, When I started playing the sax, I just wanted to play music. But when I heard your music, I wanted to play jazz.

Two months ago I made a contribution dedicated to the concert Sonny Rollins gave at Carnegie Hall New York City on the 18th of September 2007 due to the fact that he made his first concert at that venue 50 years ago. Thanks to one of the faithful visitors of this blog, Michael C. Gilbreath from Scottsdale, Arizona, I could make another contribution with a film fragment from the pre-concert reception. In this fragment Michael visits the reception with his two granddaughters Briana ( 12 years old) and Mikayla ( 14 years old). Both are dedicated fans of Sonny Rollins and fashinated by his music.

Mikayla, the oldest, plays the alto saxophone for two years now. She became fascinated in jazz music, due to the weekly lessons where she had to listen to the music of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. I decided in the 7th grade to join my school's jazz band. Within a few months I had switched from clarinet to alto saxophone and discovered that I really enjoyed playing music.: she writes in one of her first articles Why Should I Choose Anything Else? she published in the JJA ( Jazz Journalist Association) magazine Jazz Notes. She is the youngest member of this Association and loves to become a jazz journalist later. The other students in my jazz band livingly nicknamed me "jazz nerd", which by the way I took as a compliment, she continues in her article. Mikayla is now preparing an article with an interview of Dr. Lonnie Smith, the known Hammond player with the turban.
I can show you part of a film fragment where you can hear Mikayla playing with the Deer Valley High School Performance Jazz Ensemble during a concert September 2007. They play the Miles Davis tune So What.

It is great to learn how such a group of young students ( 14 - 19 years old) plays. Amazing. This band will perform at the 29th Annual Western International Band Convention in Seattle, Washington US, on Friday the 16th of November next week. So if you're around the corner, please drop by.

One of the highlights in her life-in-jazz was the first meeting with Sonny Rollins, after being to a concert of her idol in Scotsdale, Arizona with her sister Briana and two more young fans, Michael and Jeremy. This meeting was filmed and posted on the Sonny Rollins Podcast. In this informal meeting with Sonny the four young jazz fans are interviewed about their passion to jazz and specially their fascinating for Sonny's music. Sonny chats with the young admirers and advices them: First learn the tune by head, the chorusses and the melody and so and then play it with your friends, just play it .... don't think too much - let it happen !

It is remarkable to learn that such a young girl, only 14 years old, who plays the alto saxophone for only two years now, reached such a high level in playing. Only few kids from that age can refer to the great master in jazz, Sonny Rollins
who has said about hearing Mikayla playing Blue Room: Bravo, very nice! She's got talent .... be proud.

I love to end this contribution to this young US "Candy Dulfer" with one of her first alto saxophone solos in public in the tune Song for My Father. Enjoy her relief when she has finished it. Great !!

Twee maanden geleden maakte ik een bijdrage over het concert dat Sonny Rollins op 18 september 2007 gaf in Carnegie Hall, New York City, ter herinnering aan het feit dat hij 50 jaar geleden voor het eerst optrad in die zaal. Dankzij één van de trouwe lezers van deze web log, Michael C. Gilbreath uit Scottsdale, Arizona kon ik in een volgende bijdrage een aantal foto's laten zien van de receptie, voorafgaand aan het concert. De foto's zijn gemaakt door Michael tijdens zijn bezoek aan die informele bijeenkomst waar veel prominente jazzartiesten te zien waren, samen met zijn twee kleindochters Briana ( 12 jaar oud) en Mikayla ( 14 jaar oud). Beide meisjes zijn grote bewonderaars van de muziek van Sonny Rollins.

Mikayla, de oudste, bespeelt sinds twee jaar de altsax. Ze raakte geboeid door de jazzmuziek, dankzij de wekelijkse muzieklessen op school waar ze moesten luisteren naar muziek van Miles Davis, Charlie Parker en Sonny Rollins. Binnen een paar maanden was ik overgestapt van klarinet naar altsax en had ik ontdekt dat ik muziekmaken erg leuk vond), schrijft ze in één van eerste artikelen, getiteld Why Should I Choose Anything Else? ( Waarom zou ik iets anders kiezen?) gepubliceerd in het kwartaalblad Jazz Notes van de JJA ( Jazz Journalist Association). Ze is het jongste lid van deze club en ze hoopt later jazz journaliste te worden. Haar volgende artikel is een interview met niemand minder dan Dr. Lonnie Smith, de bekende Hammond organist met de tulband. De andere studenten in de jazz band noemen me liefkozend Jazz Nerd en dat vind ik een compliment, voegt ze ook nog toe in haar autobiografische artikel. Ik kan een fragment laten zien van een optreden van deze Deer Valley High School Performance Jazz Ensemble tijdens een concert in September 2007. Je herkent Mikayla op de altsax aan haar lengte. Ze spelen het nummer So What van Miles Davis.

Is het niet geweldig dat een groep jongelui van 14 tot 19 jaar oud dit soort muziek maakt en er duidelijk veel plezier aan beleeft? Fantastisch toch? Met deze band zal Mikayla op vrijdag 16 november spelen tijdens de 29ste jaarlijkse Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington, dus als je in de buurt bent ..........
Eén van de hoogtepunten in haar nog jonge jazzcarriere was een ontmoeting met haar idool Sonny Rollins. Na afloop van een concert van Sonny Rollins in Scotsdale, Arizona, werd ze, samen met haar zus Briana en twee andere jonge saxspelers Michael en Jeremy aan hem voorgesteld. Deze ontmoeting is gefilmd en opgenomen in de podcast van Sonny Rollins zelf. In deze gefilmde impressie worden de vier jongelui geinterviewd over hun passie voor de jazz in het algemeen en die voor Sonny Rollins in het bijzonder. Sonny babbelt er tussendoor met de jonge fans en geeft ze adviezen: First learn the tune by head, the chorusses and the melody and so and then play it with your friends, just play it .... don't think too much - let it happen ! (Zorg er eerst voor dat je een nummer goed kan spelen, de melodie, de coupletten en speelt het dan met je vrienden, alleen maar spelen, niet te veel denken. Laat het maar gebeuren !! )

Is het niet opmerkelijk dat zo'n jong meisje, nog maar 14 jaar oud, die nog maar net twee jaar sax speelt, al zo goed muziek maakt? Wordt ze later de Amerikaanse Candy Dulfer? Er zullen maar weinig saxofonisten van die leeftijd zijn, die kunnen zeggen, dat de grote Sonny Rollins van hun spel heeft gezegd dat ze talent hebben. Bravo, very nice! She's got talent .... be proud. ( Bravo, erg goed. Ze heeft talent .. wees daar maar trots op)

Ik vind het leuk om deze bijdrage over Mikayla Gilbreath, deze enthousiaste en ambitieuze jonge saxofoonspeler, afteronden met een filmfragment, waarop haar eerste saxsolo is vastgelegd in het nummer Song For My Father. Alleen al waard om te bekijken hoe blij en opgelucht ze is na afloop.

Ik wens haar een geweldige toekomst als jazz-journaliste, want dat wil ze graag. My aim is to become a jazz journalist, so I'll have a job that allows me to focus upon the two things I love the most - jazz and journalism. ( Mijn doel is om jazzjournaliste te worden, want dan kan ik me richten op die twee dingen, die ik erg leuk vind; jazz en journalistiek.) Ik hoop voor haar dat die droom uitkomt !!
