I bought myself a compilation CD titled Momentos by Rubén González. This CD was subtitled The Best Of Cuba's Legendary Grammy Awardwinning Pianist. The album contains recordings from the musical legacy of this great piano player, that has Oscar Peterson and Chopin as his favorite musicians. The tracks on the album are from the 1960s up to the period in which he was rediscovered by Ry Cooder during the second half of the 1990s.
Rubén González was born in 1919 in Santa Clara (Cuba) and studied piano at the Cienfuegos Conservatoire when he was a teenager. He became a pianist of popular music (like sons) and moved to the capital Havana in the early 1940s where he got jobs in bands like the Orquesta Paulina, Conjunto Camayo and Los Hermanos. His first recordings date from 1943 with Arsenio Rodriguez. Although he lived for some times as a night club entertainer in South America ( Panama, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela) he returned to Cuba in the 1960s. He took over the top dance band of Enrique Jorrin and made the first recordings under his own name. You can find three tracks on this compilation from that period: Que Infelicidad, Zancudo and Fantoche.
In the 1990s he retired, but thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club project of Ry Cooder Rubén González started a new career in music. But few people won't remember the great shot in the documentary where Rubén González plays his piano in that beautiful build gymnasium in Havana. You can see that fragment here:

Ik kocht onlangs een verzamel-CD van Rubén González getiteld Momentos. De tekst op de opgeplakte sticker vermeld: The Best Of Cuba's Legendary Grammy Awardwinning Pianist. (Het beste van de legendarische Cubaanse pianist, die een grammy award won). Het album bevat opnamen van deze legende, die fan was van Oscar Peterson en Chopin, van de jaren zestig tot en met de periode dat hij door Ry Cooder herontdekt werd eind jaren negentig.
Rubén González werd geboren in 1919 in Santa Clara (Cuba) en studeerde als tiener piano aan het Cienfuegos Conservatoire. Hij ging populaire muziek spelen en verhuisde begin jaren veertig naar de hoofdstad Havana. Daar ging hij spelen in bands als de Orquesta Paulina, Conjunto Camayo en Los Hermanos. Zijn eerste opnamen dateren uit 1943 met Arsenio Rodriguez. Howel hij jarenlang als nachtclubmuzikant leefde en werkte in Zuid Amerika (Panama, Colombia, Argentinië, Brazilië en Venezuela) keerde hij in de zestiger jaren voorgoed terug naar Cuba. Hier nam hij het toporkest van Enrique Jorrin over en maakte zijn eerste opnamen. Hiervan staan drie nummers op de CD: Que Infelicidad, Zancudo en Fantoche.
In de jaren negentig ging hij met pensioen, maar dankzij het bekende Buena Vista Social Club project van Ry Cooder begon Rubén González aan een tweede leven-in-de-muziek. Maar weinig mensen zullen niet die scene kennen uit de documentaire waarin Rubén González alleen achter zijn piano zit en speelt in het indrukwekkende gymnasium van Havana. You can see that fragment here:As one of the Super-Abuelos ( super-grandpa's) he travelled all around the world with the Buena Vista Social Club and as member of the Juan De Marcos Gonzalez' Afro-Cuban All-Stars. He made his first solo album aged 77 years old, titled Nonesuch. A geat piano player. He passed away December 2003.
