JATP Improvisation

Today I left early to be in time in Wageningen (center of the Netherlands) for the 85th Doctor Jazz Reunion, the meeting of readers of the Doctor Jazz Magazine - a trip of two and a half hour by car.
As I'm still under the spell of the Roy Hargrove concert from Thursday 19th of April 2007 I'll share a short fragment of a jamsession made several 1950s jazz legends like Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Lester Young (with Pork Pie Hat) and Buddy Rich. The fragment was made by Gjon Mili to promote the jazz feeling for the Jazz At The Philhamonic concerts produced by Norman Granz. When I saw this fragment for the very first time I was fascinated by the relax atmosphere. This more then 50 years old film fragment allows you to feel as if you was in the audience.
The fragment is the second part of a 1950 film named J.A.T.P. / Improvisation. The personel in the different scenes is:

Vandaag vroeg op stap om op tijd in Wageningen te zijn voor de 85tigste Doctor Jazz Reunie, de bijeenkomst voor lezers van het blad Doctor Jazz Magazine. Aangezien ik nog steeds onder de indruk ben van het Roy Hargrove concert van afgelopen donderdag 19 april 2007 heb ik een kort filmffragment gekozen dat me doet herinneren aan de relaxte sfeer tijdens het Roy Hargrove concert. De film werd opgenomen door Gjon Mili voor de Jazz At The Philharmonic organisatie van Norman Granz als promotiemateriaal voor hun concerten.

- 2. Pennies From Heaven: as above + Lester Young ts - Bill Harris tb.
- 3. Blues For Greasy: as above + Harry Sweet Edison tp - Flip Philips ts - Ella Fitzgerald vo.
The artists were filmed in Gjon Mili's studio in New York city September 1950 play backing at the music ( so you can see, there's nothing new under the sun) with the unfortunate result that the end product is sadly out of synch.

Nederlands ( To the English translation ) Vandaag vroeg op stap om op tijd in Wageningen te zijn voor de 85tigste Doctor Jazz Reunie, de bijeenkomst voor lezers van het blad Doctor Jazz Magazine. Aangezien ik nog steeds onder de indruk ben van het Roy Hargrove concert van afgelopen donderdag 19 april 2007 heb ik een kort filmffragment gekozen dat me doet herinneren aan de relaxte sfeer tijdens het Roy Hargrove concert. De film werd opgenomen door Gjon Mili voor de Jazz At The Philharmonic organisatie van Norman Granz als promotiemateriaal voor hun concerten. Het is een meer dan vijftig jaar oud fragment van de tweede helft van de film getiteld J.A.T.P. / Improvisation en te zien zijn verschillende legenden uit de jazzgeschieenis zoals Hank Jones, Lester Young ( met Pork Pie Hat), Buddy Rich en Ella Fitzgerald.
De film dateert uit 1950 en bevat de volgende fragmenten
- 1. Ad Lib : Hank Jones p - Ray Brown b - Buddy Rich dm
- 2. Pennies From Heaven: als boven + Lester Young ts - Bill Harris tb.
- 3. Blues For Greasy: als boven + Harry Sweet Edison tp - Flip Philips ts - Ella Fitzgerald vo.
De film is gemaakt in de filmstudio van Gjon Mili in New York september 1950 en de musici playbacken bij de muziek (ook toen al). Helaas lopen hun bewegingen niet helemaal synchroon met het geluid.
