Alix Combelle

Alix Combelle ( born in Paris June 1912 - passed away in Mantes, March 1978 ) is one of those French jazzmusicians from the swing era, now almost forgotten by the young generation. He started his career in the 1930s, the period in which Paris was the center of jazz in Europe. Remember names like Django Reinhardt, Bill Coleman, Ray Ventura and André Ekyan. Alix Combelle, who played clarinet and tenor saxophone performed in the orchestras of Arthur Briggs and Coleman Hawkins. He recorded as a leader with the Quintet du Hot Club de France in 1935 and recorded in 1937 some Swing records featuring Bill Coleman. 
On the 4th of October 1937, now 70 years ago, he recorded four tunes with a sextet, named Alix Combelle et son Orchestra. Three tunes were reissued in the great series Le Jazz En France, an LP series by Pathé Marconi. My copy is volume 11. The tunes are: Exactly Like You; the Irving Berlin tune, Alexander's Ragtime Band and a Bill Coleman composition Hang Over Blues. Bill Coleman plays the trumpet in this small band; Alix Combelle blows the clarinet, tenor saxophone and scats in Hang Over Blues. The other members of the band are David Martin piano, Roger Chaput guitar, Wilson Myers bass and Jerry Mengo drums. These musicians gave those tunes a Hot club-like rhythm drive.
When you listen to these 70 years old tunes it sounds rather dated; but if you listen carefully to the saxophone of Alix Combelle you hear a skilled saxophone player that plays some excellent solos in turns with Bill Coleman on trumpet.
In the 1930s Alix Combelle also recorded as a sideman in bands with Oscar Aleman, the Argentine jazz guitar player, who was very popular during this period. You can find Alix Combelle and Oscar Aleman in recordings with Eddie Brunner Orchestra ( 1938) and Danny Polo and his Swing Stars (1939 ). In November 1938 Alix Combelle recorded four transcriptions to broadcast with his orchestra featuring Oscar Aleman; four tunes Daphné, My Melancholy Baby, Don't, Be That Way and Alexander's Ragtime Band were reissued on TFD 5010. Hij begon zijn loopbaan in de jaren dertig, de periode waarin Parijs het middelpunt van de jazz in Europa was. Denk maar eens aan Django Reinhardt, Bill Coleman, Ray Ventura en André Ekyan. Alix Combelle, speelde klarinet en tenorsax in de orkesten van Arthur Briggs en Coleman Hawkins. Hij nam in 1935 als leider van de Quintet du Hot Club de France platen op en in 1937 ook een aantal Swingplaten met een groep, waarin Bill Coleman speelde. Op 4 oktober 1937, nu 70 jaar geleden, nam hij vier nummers op met zijn sextet, getiteld Alix Combelle et son Orchestra. Als je luistert naar deze 70 jaar oude muziek dan klinkt het op het eerste oor gedateerd; maar als je goed luistert, dan ontdek je wat een ervaren improvisator Alix Combelle was op zijn saxofoon, om en om in solo met de trompet van Bill Coleman.
In de jaren dertig heeft Alix Combelle ook opnamen gemaakt in orkesten samen met de Argentijnse gitarist Oscar Aleman, die in de jaren dertig erg populair was in Frankrijk. Je vindt Alix Combelle en Oscar Aleman samen in opnamen met het Eddie Brunner Orchestra ( 1938) en in Danny Polo and his Swing Stars. ( 1939 ). In november 1938 neemt Alix Combelle vier nummers op voor een radioprogramma, met daarbij Oscar Aleman; vier van deze titels: Daphné, My Melancholy Baby, Don't Be That Way en Alexander's Ragtime Band zijn heruitgebracht op een plaat genummerd TFD 5010.
