Dit soort LPs kom je vaak tegen in tweedehandswinkeltjes en op rommelmarkten. Verzamelplaten als All-Times Dixieland of Het Beste Van ..... . of andere twijfelachtige bijeenraapsels. Heel wat van die goedkope bijeengeharkte muziek vind je ook in de CD-bakken - meestal met oninteressante muziek, zeker voor de doorgewinterde verzamelaar. Deze LP, de Praktica und Dixieland - Everywhere In The World (= Praktica en Dixieland - Overal Ter Wereld) is zo'n plaat die alle schijn tegen zich heeft en je dus beter kunt laten staan in de bakken...... of toch niet ... in dit geval !! Omdat er een opname opstond van Charquet et Co nam ik hem mee voor een eurootje.


Het Internationale Dixieland-Festival in Dresden wordt al zo'n dertig jaar in mei georganiseerd en sinds kort is er ook een moderne jazz variant gepland in november. De plaat (AMIGA 55637), die gesponsord lijkt door Praktica, bekend van de spiegelreflexcamera's, bevat tien nummers, alle opgenomen door verschillende bands ten behoeve van radiouitzendingen op 5 en 6 mei 1978 in het Kulturpalast van Dresden in het voormalig Oost-Duitsland.

Praktica was een bekend merk voor spiegelreflexcamera's in die dagen - ik herinner me dat deze goedkope Oost Duitse spiegelreflexcamera's voor velen van ons, arme studenten, een begeerd object was. Als jong volwassene werkte je dan de hele zomer in de bessen, in de horeca in Kamperland of bij Coroos in de fabriek, om het geld voor zo'n camera bij elkaar te krijgen. Een Praktica was vaak het hoogst haalbare en werd dan ook meestal de allereerste echte camera. Ik geloof niet dat de fabriek nog bestaat.
Op de LP staan, behalve Charquet et Co, nummers van allerlei min-of-meer bekende Oude Stijl Jazz orkesten zoals bijvoorbeeld Ken Colyer's Jazzmen uit Engeland, die traditionele New Orleans muziek speelde, of, zoals ze dat zo mooi op de hoes omschrijven: New-Orleans-Musik reinsten Stils, bewundernswert leichtflüssig (sic), fast "gemütlich", dennoch enorm swingend, vorbildlich im Ensemble-Geist und mit meisterhaftem kollektiven Verflechtungsspiel. ( = New Orleans Muziek van het zuiverste soort, opvallend lichtvoetig ( er staat Leichtflüssig, wat "vluchtig" betekent, maar ik maar er maar Leichtfüssig van), bijna "gezellig" te noemen, maar desondanks swingend, met een voorbeeldig samenspel en meesterlijke collectieve improvisaties.). Andere orkesten zijn de Milano Jazz Gang uit Italië, die een soort Frisco-jazz spelen, onze eigen New Orleans Syncopators, beinvloed door de Dutch Swing College Band ( volgens de hoes) met indrukwekkend "mehrstimmiger" Gesang, eine wirkliche Attraktivität (= meerstemmig gezang - heel erg leuk), de Zweedse Jazz Doctors, de Blue Note Seven uit Oostenrijk, de Fesor's Big City Band uit Denemarken, geleid door Ole "Fesors" Lindgren, de Old Metropolitan Jazzband uit Polen en natuurlijk Charquet et Co uit Frankrijk. Twee bands uit Oost Duitsland maken het rijtje af: de Optimisten Sonneberg uit Oost Berlijn en Papa Binne's Jazzband.
Toen ik de plaat opzette werd ik verrast door de muziek, want bijna alle bands speelden "Super", zoals ze dat in Duitsland zeggen; geen "dixieland", in de verkeerde betekenis van het woord. Sorry dat ik het zo noem, maar geen oubollige muziek, de Circus Square Jazz Band-achtige nummers á la My Bonny Is Over The Ocean of The Towertop Of Bommel ( = .... ja, je leest het goed !!), maar wel pure Oude Stijl Jazzbands zoals ik me die herinner van de Oude Stijl Jazz Festivals in Breda in de jaren zeventig en tachtig van de vorige eeuw.
Ole "Fesors" Lindgren ( Fesor's Big City Band). Ik hoorde Ole in juli 2005 in Kopenhagen met het Grand Danois" Fessor-Nulle Quintet .

Helaas, heb ik Charquet et Co nooit live mogen aanschouwen - wel sommige afzonderlijke leden, maar nooit tijdens hun zegetocht door Nederland in de tweede helft van de jaren zeventig, waarbij haast elk concert op LP werd uitgebracht !! Ik wil graag een fragment van een TV uitzending laten horen, Sesjun van de Tros, met dit orkest, Charquet et Company, zoals Cees Schrama zegt, dat het nummer Everybody Stomp speelt; een schitterend voorbeeld van hun energieke stijl.

Wat leren we hiervan? De hoes van een plaat belichaamt niet altijd op een zuivere manier de inhoud. Lees goed welke bands optreden en kijk naar de titels en laat je eigen gevoel spreken......... want soms laat die je niet in de steek !!

Record covers ought to be a mirror of the music you can expect on the record inside. Sometimes record sleeves put you on the wrong track ..... What to think about the record Praktica und Dixieland - Everywhere In The World. Praktica, for the youngsters among us, was a cheap East-German camera. I remember that most of us bought such a single-lens reflex camera from our first earned money in holiday jobs as we couldn't afford other cameras, being more expensive ........ and Dixieland ..... played and performed in the wrong way .... Dixieland with strawheads, Hamburgers, Bratwurst and fancy-fairs. Well - this album seems to be such a record ... Or not? ....... You can read about it in my contribution: Praktica und Dixieland.

Praktica und Dixieland

This is the kind of LPs you often find in second-hand record shops or at flea markets. Compilation LPs with The Best of Dixieland music or other dubious selections. Nowadays such compilations are still made for cheap CD productions. Most of these selections contain uninteresting music. This album, the Praktica & Dixieland - Everywhere In The World (Amiga 8 55 637) is such an album that has all appearances against it.
Normally I'd neglected this kind of records, but because the present of Charquet et Co on one of the tracks ( St. Louis Shuffle) I gave it a chance and bought it for one euro. The International Dixieland-Festival in Dresden (Germany) has been organised since the early 1970s and is still a large festival scheduled in May of each year. On the LP, which seems to be sponsored by Praktica, contains ten tracks, all recorded by different orchestras for a radio broadcast on the 5th and 6th of May 1978 in the Dresden Kulturpalast.

Praktica was a brand of single-lens reflex cameras in those days. I don't think the factory is still active. It was the cheapest camera of that type to purchase, so for a lot of middle-aged people this might have been their first camera.

On the album, except the Charquet et Co track, you can find tunes by a lot of traditional jazz bands like the Ken Colyer's Jazzmen from England, which played traditional New Orleans music, or, as the liner notes reads: New-Orleans -Musik reinsten Stils, bewundernswert leichtflüssig (sic), fast "gemütlich", dennoch enorm swingend, vorbildlich im Ensemble-Geist und mit meisterhaftem kollektiven Verflechtungsspiel. (= The most pure styled New Orleans music, fleeting ( or should I read leichtfüssig !!) light-footed, almost "cosy", but very swinging, a strong orchestra and great collective orchestration.). Other bands are The Milano Jazz Gang from Italy, who plays a kind of Frisco Jazz, the Dutch New Orleans Syncopators, influenced by the Dutch Swing College and honoured for its "mehrstimmiger" Gesang, eine wirkliche Attraktivität (= harmonized vocals - really attractive), the Jazz Doctors from Sweden, the Blue Note Seven from Austria, the Fesor's Big City Band from Denmark, directed by Ole "Fesors" Lindgren, the Old Metropolitan Jazzband from Poland and of course, the Charquet et Co from France. Two local bands, the Optimisten Sonneberg from Berlin and the Papa Binne's Jazzband complete the selection.

When I played the record I was surprised by the music as almost all tracks were great. No Dixieland, sorry for that, Dixieland with straw hats and umbrella's, a kind of music I don't like, but pure traditional jazz as was played during this period and it reminds me to the numerous Traditional Jazz Festivals in Breda, in the south of the Netherlands, where I heard some of these bands during the 1970s and 80s.

Ole "Fesors" Lindgren ( Fesor's Big City Band). I heard him playing July 2005 in Copenhagen with his Grand Danois" Fessor-Nulle Quintet .
Unfortunally, I've never heard the Charquet et Co band live - what a shame. It's one my favourites and I love to show you why. Enjoy a fragment by the Dutch TV program Sesjun with Charquet et Co playing Everybody Stomp.

Platenhoezen horen een spiegel te zijn van datgene, wat je op de plaat mag verwachten, maar soms zetten hoezen je op het verkeerde been. Wat te denken van Praktica & Dixieland. Praktica, voor de jongeren onder ons, was een goedkoop Oost Duits merk fototoestel, dat de goedkoopste spiegelrefelxcamera's produceerde, en voor velen van ons werd met de zelfverdiende centen met bessenplukken, vakantiewerk bij Coroos of met bollenpellen ( ik zit hier in Zeeland) deze camera aangeschaft. ........... en Dixieland .... is voor mij synoniem met strooienhoedjes, hamburgers, en The Towertop Of Bommel ( = ..... je leest het goed !). De LP Praktica und Dixieland is zo'n misleider .... Je vindt er morgen alles over in de bijdrage Praktica en Dixieland !
