Janet Klein: Ready For You

A month ago Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys newest album, Ready For You has been released in the Steve Allen Theatre, in a concert subtitled: Naughty, lovely and obscure musical gems of the 1910's, 20's and 30's performed with uncommon authenticity by the enchanting Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys.

The album Ready For You contains almost twenty tunes most from the late 1920s and 1930s - all vaudeville and ragtime tunes. I found some great fragments of tunes played by Janet on this CD I love to share with you. What to think about the 1927 Kahn and Simons tune: Who's That Knocking At My Door? It reminds me to Annette Hanshaw, my favorite 1920s vocalist.

As I told you in a previous blog I like the way Janet is promoting the 1910s up to 1930s vaudeville music and ragtimes with her dresses, her appearances, her website, her video clips, her repertoire and, last but not least, her singing. It reminds me of the times when I started to collect music and one of the music styles that fascinated me where ragtime piano rolls and thanks to the film The Sting, the music of Scott Joplin. Later I learned more about the vocal ragtime’s from musicians like Ian Whitcomb. I had some LPs ( I sold it !!) from Ian like Under The Ragtime Moon with titles like When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band To France, We're Going To Celebrate The End Of War in Ragtime (referring the First World War) or mystery titles like I Got So Far With Sophie and Sophie Goes So Far With Me. Isn't it great to learn that Ian Whitcomb is still playing his great ragtime piano in Janet Klein's Parlor Boys?

Last weeks Janet Klein was on a tour to Japan, where she has played with the great Sweet Hollywaiians. I told about this great Japanese band in a previous blog, Sweet Hollywaiians - Hula Girl and Tom Marion Sweet Hollywaiians - O Surdato Nnamorato. This last album was recorded at one of their tours along the westcoast of the US, featuring Tom Marion, one of the members of R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders and ........Janet Klein's Parlor Boys. The Sweet Hollywaiians visit the west coast of the US several times where they performed with Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. I think Janet will return this weekend and maybe someone can inform us about her concerts in Japan in this blog - that would be great. Love to finish this blog with another tune that is to be found on Janet's Klein latest album "Ready For You" titled I Don't Know Whether To Do It Or Not....

MICKEY'S CIRCUS - WALT DISNEY
United Artists released the Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Circus on the first of August 1936, now 72 years ago. In this film, in colour, Mickey Mouse's voice was made by Walt Disney himself. In this film Mickey has her own circus and Donald Duck is one of the artist who has a show with sea lions, but the animals don't listen very well and both Donald as Mickey end up on the tightrope. Mind that Donald Duck, whose voice was made by Clarence Nash made his debut in 1934 in Silly Symphony and this guest apperance was one of Donald's first public figures.

Een maand geleden werd het nieuwste album van Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys uitgebracht, getiteld Ready For You, tijdens een optreden in het Steve Allen Theatre, tijdens een concert aangekondigd als: Naughty, lovely and obscure musical gems of the 1910's, 20's and 30's performed with uncommon authenticity by the enchanting Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. ( = Ondeugende, lieve en obscure muzikale juweeltjes uit de jaren tien-, twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw, uitgevoerd met een ongebruikelijke echtheid door de fascinerende Janet Klein en haar Parlor Boys)

Het album Ready For You bevat bijna twintig nummers uit de eerste dertig jaar van de Twintigste Eeuw, met het accent op de jaren twintig en dertig; de nummers zijn voornamelijk vaudeville en ragtimes. Ik vond een aantal fragmenten op internet van optredens waarin Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys een aantal van de nummers van de CD laat horen. Het eerste fragment is getiteld: Who's That Knocking At My Door? uit 1927 geschreven door Kahn and Simons, waarbij ik meteen aan mijn meest favoriete zangeres uit de eerste helft van de Twintigste Eeuw moet denken: Annette Hanshaw .

Zoals ik in een van mijn eerdere bijdrage schreef, hou ik van de manier waarop Janet Klein, m.b.v. haar uiterlijk, haar kleding, haar website, haar videoclips, haar prachtig uitgevoerde CDs ( alleen daarom al zijn die het "hebben" waard) en, niet in de laatste plaats, met haar zang, deze muziek levend houdt. Het herinnert me aan de tijd toen ik deze muziek ontdekte, lang geleden, ik vermoed als voortvloeisel op de succesvolle film The Sting en ik platen ging verzamelen met ragtime piano rollen en de muziek van Scott Joplin. Later ontdekte ik de gezongen ragtimenummers dankzij de platen van Ian Whitcomb. Ik had een aantal LPs van hem ( alle verkocht !!) zoals Under The Ragtime Moon waarop nummers stonden als When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band To France, We're Going To Celebrate The End Of War in Ragtime (uiteraard werd hier de Eerste Wereldoorlog mee bedoeld) en van die mysterieuze titels als I Got So Far With Sophie and Sophie Goes So Far With Me. Is het niet geweldig om te ontdekken dat derig jaar later Ian Whitcomb nog steeds actief is en speelt bij Janet Klein's Parlor Boys?
Nog zo'n mooi voorbeeld van een nummer van haar laatste album: Het nummer uit 1934 Take A Number from One To Ten.

De afgelopen weken tourde Janet Klein door Japan, waar ze ongetwijfeld gespeeld zal hebben met de Sweet Hollywaiians. Ik heb in eerdere blogs uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan deze Japanse band: Sweet Hollywaiians - Hula Girl en Tom Marion Sweet Hollywaiians - O Surdato Nnamurato. Ik vermoed dat Janet komend weekend terug komt van haar bezoek aan Japan en het zou natuurlijk mooi zijn als één van de (Japanse?) lezers van dit blog die haar heeft horen spelen, zijn of haar ervaringen wil delen met ons. Ik wil eindigen met een laatste nummer, dat ook op haar laatste album "Ready For You" staat, getiteld I Don't Know Whether To Do It Or Not.

MICKEY'S CIRCUS - WALT DISNEY
United Artists bracht op 1 augustus 1936, 72 jaar geleden dus, de Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Circus uit. In deze film, in kleur, wordt de stem van Mickey Mouse gemaakt door Walt Disney zelf. In de film heeft Mickey haar eigen circus en Donald Duck heeft er een act met zeeleeuwen, maar die beesten zijn nogal eigenwijs en luisteren slecht. Zowel Mickey als Donald eindigein hoog in de touwen..... Bedenkt dat Donald Duck, wiens stem gemaakt werd door Clarence Nash, zijn debuut maakte in 1934 in Silly Symphony en dat dit gastoptreden één van Donald's eerste publieke optredens was.

Janet Klein: Oh !

The record I have in front of me is simply labeled Oh!. On the cover a flapper girl with sleek bob haircut, two flowers above the ears, with a tambourin holding between her fingers and the word Oh! written on it. It's one of the records made by Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. The album Oh!, named after a late 1920s composition by Robert Cloud, was released two years ago, May 2006.
How did I found Janet? Well, a year ago I found one of her beautiful film fragments, when I was seeking for some music by the Sweet Hollywaiians, a Japanese retro-string band and on one of the films Janet Klein participated. A month ago I posted a contribution about her music, simply titled Janet Klein and shared with you one of those performances with members of the Sweet Hollywaiians. You can also find some great retro-film fragments with Janet Klein in the centre of attention.

Thanks to Janet, I'm able to listen to some of her records now, made with her Parlor Boys. The music Janet Klein plays are those obscure, lovely, and naughty songs from the first three decades of the XXth century. She was raised in San Bernadino in California (USA) in the 1970s where she heard the music of the 1920s thanks to her grandparents. Her grandpa had been a magician in vaudeville shows during the 1930s in New York. When she was a teenager she had learned to play herself the ukulele, the oft-ridicled cousin of the guitar, and was fascinated by the music and designs ( like Jugendstil) of the first half of the XXth century. She started to collect sheet music from the late 1800s and early 1900s because she loved the designs, and became later fascinated by the music itself.

So far so good. I'll inform you later about how she became involved in show business and how she started to make her first recordings. In Oh!, most tunes are from the so-called Roaring Twenties, sung by the early female jazz singers like a great version of Who-oo? You-oo That's Who! which reminds me of Annette That's All Hanshaw's 1927 Pathé Actuelle version, That's Love, sung by The Boswell Sisters, or Sweet Man, a popular tune by dance bands all through that decade. Maybe the unknown tunes, rediscovered by Janet are the most surprising part of this album. Tunes like If You Hadn't Gone Away, the unpublished 1931 Fats Waller - Andy Razaf composition, recorded by Blance Calloway and her Joy Boys and the 1929 title tune Oh! Music to delight, entice beguile and set the toes a-tappin ! It's really a pleasure to listen to this record, fresh transparent music. I'll be back with more Janet Klein's treasures later ......

De plaat die ik voor mijn neus heb liggen heeft een even korte als eenvoudige titel: Oh ! Op de voorkant een zgn. flapper girl, een jonge vrouw met een sluik bob kapsel, twee bloemen boven de oren en tussen haar vingers een tamboerijn, waarop de titel Oh ! geschreven staat. Het is één van de platen gemaakt door Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. Deze plaat Oh!, genoemd naar een compositie van Robert Cloud geschreven eind jaren twintig, werd twee jaar geleden uitgebracht: mei 2006.
Hoe ben ik Janet op het spoor gekomen? Het zit zo, een jaar geleden vond ik een paar van haar mooie muziekclips op het internet toen ik bezig was om muziek van de Japanse band The Sweet Hollywaiians te zoeken, een retro-string band. Op één van hun filmpjes speelde Janet Klein mee. Een maand geleden besteedde ik aandacht aan haar muziek in een bijdrage eenvoudigweg getiteld Janet Klein en daarbij plaatste ik het filmpje van de Sweet Hollywaiians met Janet. Ook een aantal retro-filmfragmenten, waarin ze zelf de hoofdrol speelt staan op die pagina.

Dankzij Janet, kan ik nu zelf haar platen gemaakt met The Parlor Boys beluisteren. De nummers die Janet Klein zingt en speelt op haar ukulele zijn obscure, lovely, and naughty songs ( = obscure, lieve en ondeugende) liedjes uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Ze groeide op in San Bernadino in Californië (VS) in de jaren zeventig en hoorde bij haar grootouders de muziek uit de jaren twintig. Haar grootvader was vroeger goochelaar geweest in een vaudeville-show in New York City tijdens de dertiger jaren. Als tiener leerde ze zichzelf de ukulele bespelen, het ondergeschoven neefje van de gitaar, en raakte gefascineerd door de muziek en de kunst ( Jugendstil) uit de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. Ze begon bladmuziek te verzamelen vanwege de krullerige designs, maar raakte al snel ook geboeid door de muziek, die uitgeschreven stond.

Tot zover iets over haar eerste jaren. Ik zal later meer vertellen hoe ze uiteindelijk in de showbusiness terecht kwam en over haar eerste opnamen. In Oh !, vinden we vooral composities uit de Roaring Twenties, de jaren twintig, zoals die gezongen werden door de eerste zangeressen. Een nummer als Who-oo? You-oo That's Who! herinnert me meteen aan Annette That's All Hanshaw, die het in 1927 voor Pathé Actuelle opnam en That's Love, gezongen door de Boswell Sisters, of Sweet Man, een populair nummer dat in die jaren door heel wat dansbands aan de groef werd toevertrouwd. Misschien zijn het echter wel de onbekende nummers, die deze plaat zo bijzonder maken en je verrassen; nummers die door Janet herontdekt zijn. Wat te denken van het nooit gepubliceerde nummer If You Hadn't Gone Away gecomponeerd door Fats Waller en Andy Razaf, ooit opgenomen door Blance Calloway and her Joy Boys? Ook het titelnummer Oh ! uit 1929 is tamelijk onbekend. Het is een waar genoegen om naar deze soms onbekende, maar steeds frisse, transparante nummers te luisteren. Music to delight, entice beguile and set the toes a-tappin! (= Muziek om te genieten, te bekoren en de tenen het ritme te laten tikken ). Ik kom binnenkort met nog meer van die kleine schatten opgediept uit het verleden door Janet Klein .............

Ik vond een fragment van een concert door Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys waarin ze het nummer Baltimore, dat als vijfde nummer ook op deze CD staat.

A year ago I pointed you to the Sweet Hollywaiians, a Japanese string band, that visited the west coast of the US in the summer of 2006. During that tour they played with Tom Marion, member of the R. Crumb Cheap Suit Serenaders, who took part of a record session for the album O Surdato Nnammurato. They also played with another well known ukulele player of that region ( and the rest of the world) Janet Klein. I found a fragment of a concert where she plays together with one of the Sweet Hollywaiians musicians and Tom Marion, at the Coffee Gallery October 2007

Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys surprised me with their perfect performances that revive the early Twentieth Century, with the Ragtime and vaudevillle songs made in popular in the 1910s and 1920s.

Her clothes, her performance, her voice, her hair dress even her website (!) seem to come directly from that period. Up to now she made five CDs with ca. 110 known and unknown tunes from that period. She is still searching for new finds to use in her shows. Sometimes people are a bit shocked, when they realize that their grandparents must have listened to such "naughty" songs: I have moments, when I'm singing that I'm shocking people. They realize that these songs are naught and they think, gee I didn't know that grandma and grandpa were hearing things like that back then. Like the Bratislava Hot Serenaders, Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys make great video clips to promote their music - clips made in a way as if they were filmed many years ago as an early sound film. Enjoy their version of Yiddish Hula Boy.

Up to know I haven't heard any of her albums and I love to. Her music is original, lively, comic and historical interesting. I found a ukulele classic, titeled Tonight You Belong To Me she plays in a karaoke version avant la lettre, better known as the Screen Songs, the Bouncing Ball films made by Max Fleischer. I will talk about these great films later, I promise.

2009: OSCAR ALEMAN JUBILEE YEAR:

Martin Ackermann pointed me to this building that he found in Cuba. He wondered if this man was an Oscar Aleman fan too. Well, I guess, I know....... This man is a smart businissman who is ready for 2009, the Oscar Aleman Jubilee Year, in which people worldwide celebrate Oscar Aleman's one hunderdth birthday. I guess he will sell baseball caps, T-shirts, badgets and apron strings. I'm sure it will become a hype: with your apron strings behind the oven like Oscar Aleman ..... A new hype is born !!

Een jaar geleden wees ik jullie op het bestaan van de Japanse stringband, the Sweet Hollywaiians , die in 2006 de westkust van Amerika bezocht. Tijdens deze tournee speelden ze met Tom Marion, lid van de R. Crumb Cheap Suit Serenaders en namen ze een CD op getiteld O Surdato Nnammurato . Ze speelden ook met een andere bekende ukulelespeler uit die streek ( en ver daarbuiten), Janet Klein, die ik vandaag in het zonnetje wil zetten. Ik vond een fragment van een optreden waarin ze met één van de Sweet Hollywaiians muzikanten en met Tom Marion een nummer speelt in de Coffee Gallery in oktober 2007

Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys verrasten me met hun perfecte optredens, kleding en repertoire keus waarmee ze de populaire ragtime- en vaudeville optredens uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw doen herleven.

Haar kleding, haar optreden, haar stem en haarstijl, haar hele uitstraling, zelfs haar website ademen die sfeer van de jaren rond 1910 uit. Tot op heden heeft ze al zo'n vijf CDs gemaakt met ruim honderd bekende en vooral onbekende nummers uit die periode. Ze is elke dag op zoek naar nieuwe muziek, nieuwe inspiraties voor haar optredens. Soms zijn mensen in het publiek wel eens geschokt als ze zich realiseren dat de soms wat al te frivole liedjes vroeger door hun opa's en oma's beluisterd werden: I have moments, When I'm singing that I'm shocking people. They realize that these songs are naught and they think, gee I didn't know that grandma and grandpa were hearing things like that back then. Net als de Bratislava Hot Serenaders, maken Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys veel werk van hun video-clips, waarmee ze hun muziek promoten - clips, als oude vergeelde filmpjes uit de beginperiode van de geluidsfilm. Tot op heden heb ik geen enkele CD van haar gehoord, maar ik hoop dat daar verandering in komt. Haar muziek is origineel, levendig, komisch en historisch interessant. Ik vond een ukulele klassieker: Tonight You Belong To Me dat ze als een soort karaoke-versie avant la lettre uitvoert, of zoals ze dat toen deden, als een Bouncing Ball film, een Screen- of Carsongs, zoals die gemaakt werden door Max Fleischer. Bouncing Ball .... ook zo'n onderwerp waar ik binenkort nog wel eens in wil duiken.

Geniet van haar instructies en, nog beter, pak het plastic gitaartje uit de speelgoedbox, stem de vier snaren en doe de zeven accoorden na - ik weet dat je't kunt. En dan zingen ..... dat moet ook lukken zo - zo hard je kunt. De woorden komen uit de film uitgebracht in 1979 getiteld The Jerk: Tonight You Belong To Me

2009: HET OSCAR ALEMAN JUBILEUM JAAR:

Martin Ackermann wees me op een gebouw, dat hij fotografeerde in Cuba. Hij vroeg zich af of de eigenaar van deze zaak een groot Oscar Aleman fan was. Nou, Martin, volgens mij is hij meer een gewiekst zakenman, die nu al klaar is voor het grote jubileumjaar 2009 waarin wereldwijd het honderdste geboortejaar van Oscar Aleman gevierd wordt. Binnen liggen de stapels baseballpetjes, bedrukte t-shirts, badgets en keukenschorten al klaar. En zoals je wellicht niet wist ... Ik denk dat volgend jaar heel wat huismannen net als Oscar achter het fornuis zullen staan!! Hans Koert keepswinging@live.nl
