In de eerste dagen van oktober 1900 neemt de Sousa Band zes nummers op in drie dagen voor Victor. Deze opnamen vonden plaats in Philadelphia. De Sousa band was een groot concertorkest dat de populaire muziek van het eind van de negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw speelde. In het voorjaar en de zomer van 1900 komen ze zelfs naar Europa toe en laten ons kennismaken met de ragtime.

Eén van de opgenomen nummers was Whistling Rufus, een paar jaar eerder geschreven door Kerry Mills. Dit nummer noemde men een cakewalk - een uitvinding van de blanke Amerikanen, een dans, direct gerelateerd aan de mars, die Sousa ( en andere bands uit die tijd) graag speelden. Met dit nummer, Whistling Rufus, werd Sousa erg bekend en ze reisden van kust tot kust, en boekten overal veel succes met hun "cakewalks", die een hele gekte veroorzaakte: The Cakewalk-craze.

Het nummer kreeg later ook tekst, geschreven door W. Murdock Lind.

De diepere betekenis achter de tekst voedde echter de rassenongelijkheid, zoals dat in het zuiden van de VS nog volop heerste en de tekst bevestigde alleen maar de vooroordelen van de blanke Amerikaan.

That they thought the angels' harps was a-playing.

Ik moet dit nummer al als kind onwillekeurig vele malen op de radio gehoord hebben, want het is zo'n nummer waarvan de melodie in je hoofd blijft zitten, want bijna iedereen kent alleen de instrumentale versie. Ik vond een prachtige fingerpicking uitvoering op een sopraanukulele, gespeeld op de manier zoals Vess L. Ossman dit in mei 1900 op plaat vastlegde.

LES TRICHEURS
On the 9th of October 1958, the French movie Les Tricheurs was opened in French cinemas. It is a film about young people from the beatniks generation. A young Parisian college girl gets involved in that group and, like in any film I guess, gets in love. Well, for me the story isn't interesting, but it's the music that hits me!
The 50 year old music of this film is very interesting as it is one of those films that has some great musicians used for the soundtrack. Part of the film has music by rockers like Fats Domino and the Champs, but most of the film music was played by an all-star band featuring Roy Eldridge, Mezz Mezzrow, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray brown and Gus Johnson.

Music supports the shots made in a film and a lot of musicians got a living by playing film music in studios all around the States and Europe. This sound track was recorded on the first of May 1958 in Paris, supervised by Norman Granz. Janet Klein: Ready For You

A month ago Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys newest album, Ready For You has been released in the Steve Allen Theatre, in a concert subtitled: Naughty, lovely and obscure musical gems of the 1910's, 20's and 30's performed with uncommon authenticity by the enchanting Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys.

The album Ready For You contains almost twenty tunes most from the late 1920s and 1930s - all vaudeville and ragtime tunes. I found some great fragments of tunes played by Janet on this CD I love to share with you. What to think about the 1927 Kahn and Simons tune: Who's That Knocking At My Door? It reminds me to Annette Hanshaw, my favorite 1920s vocalist.

As I told you in a previous blog I like the way Janet is promoting the 1910s up to 1930s vaudeville music and ragtimes with her dresses, her appearances, her website, her video clips, her repertoire and, last but not least, her singing. It reminds me of the times when I started to collect music and one of the music styles that fascinated me where ragtime piano rolls and thanks to the film The Sting, the music of Scott Joplin. Later I learned more about the vocal ragtime’s from musicians like Ian Whitcomb. I had some LPs ( I sold it !!) from Ian like Under The Ragtime Moon with titles like When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band To France, We're Going To Celebrate The End Of War in Ragtime (referring the First World War) or mystery titles like I Got So Far With Sophie and Sophie Goes So Far With Me. Isn't it great to learn that Ian Whitcomb is still playing his great ragtime piano in Janet Klein's Parlor Boys?
Enjoy another example of one of the tunes listed on her latest album: the 1934 tune Take a Number from One To Ten.

Last weeks Janet Klein was on a tour to Japan, where she has played with the great Sweet Hollywaiians. I told about this great Japanese band in a previous blog, Sweet Hollywaiians - Hula Girl and Tom Marion Sweet Hollywaiians - O Surdato Nnamorato. This last album was recorded at one of their tours along the westcoast of the US, featuring Tom Marion, one of the members of R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders and ........Janet Klein's Parlor Boys. The Sweet Hollywaiians visit the west coast of the US several times where they performed with Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. I think Janet will return this weekend and maybe someone can inform us about her concerts in Japan in this blog - that would be great. Love to finish this blog with another tune that is to be found on Janet's Klein latest album "Ready For You" titled I Don't Know Whether To Do It Or Not....

MICKEY'S CIRCUS - WALT DISNEY
United Artists released the Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Circus on the first of August 1936, now 72 years ago. In this film, in colour, Mickey Mouse's voice was made by Walt Disney himself. In this film Mickey has her own circus and Donald Duck is one of the artist who has a show with sea lions, but the animals don't listen very well and both Donald as Mickey end up on the tightrope. Mind that Donald Duck, whose voice was made by Clarence Nash made his debut in 1934 in Silly Symphony and this guest apperance was one of Donald's first public figures.

Een maand geleden werd het nieuwste album van Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys uitgebracht, getiteld Ready For You, tijdens een optreden in het Steve Allen Theatre, tijdens een concert aangekondigd als: Naughty, lovely and obscure musical gems of the 1910's, 20's and 30's performed with uncommon authenticity by the enchanting Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. ( = Ondeugende, lieve en obscure muzikale juweeltjes uit de jaren tien-, twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw, uitgevoerd met een ongebruikelijke echtheid door de fascinerende Janet Klein en haar Parlor Boys)

Het album Ready For You bevat bijna twintig nummers uit de eerste dertig jaar van de Twintigste Eeuw, met het accent op de jaren twintig en dertig; de nummers zijn voornamelijk vaudeville en ragtimes. Ik vond een aantal fragmenten op internet van optredens waarin Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys een aantal van de nummers van de CD laat horen. Het eerste fragment is getiteld: Who's That Knocking At My Door? uit 1927 geschreven door Kahn and Simons, waarbij ik meteen aan mijn meest favoriete zangeres uit de eerste helft van de Twintigste Eeuw moet denken: Annette Hanshaw .

Zoals ik in een van mijn eerdere bijdrage schreef, hou ik van de manier waarop Janet Klein, m.b.v. haar uiterlijk, haar kleding, haar website, haar videoclips, haar prachtig uitgevoerde CDs ( alleen daarom al zijn die het "hebben" waard) en, niet in de laatste plaats, met haar zang, deze muziek levend houdt. Het herinnert me aan de tijd toen ik deze muziek ontdekte, lang geleden, ik vermoed als voortvloeisel op de succesvolle film The Sting en ik platen ging verzamelen met ragtime piano rollen en de muziek van Scott Joplin. Later ontdekte ik de gezongen ragtimenummers dankzij de platen van Ian Whitcomb. Ik had een aantal LPs van hem ( alle verkocht !!) zoals Under The Ragtime Moon waarop nummers stonden als When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band To France, We're Going To Celebrate The End Of War in Ragtime (uiteraard werd hier de Eerste Wereldoorlog mee bedoeld) en van die mysterieuze titels als I Got So Far With Sophie and Sophie Goes So Far With Me. Is het niet geweldig om te ontdekken dat derig jaar later Ian Whitcomb nog steeds actief is en speelt bij Janet Klein's Parlor Boys?
Nog zo'n mooi voorbeeld van een nummer van haar laatste album: Het nummer uit 1934 Take A Number from One To Ten.

De afgelopen weken tourde Janet Klein door Japan, waar ze ongetwijfeld gespeeld zal hebben met de Sweet Hollywaiians. Ik wil eindigen met een laatste nummer, dat ook op haar laatste album "Ready For You" staat, getiteld I Don't Know Whether To Do It Or Not.

MICKEY'S CIRCUS - WALT DISNEY
United Artists bracht op 1 augustus 1936, 72 jaar geleden dus, de Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Circus uit. In deze film, in kleur, wordt de stem van Mickey Mouse gemaakt door Walt Disney zelf. In de film heeft Mickey haar eigen circus en Donald Duck heeft er een act met zeeleeuwen, maar die beesten zijn nogal eigenwijs en luisteren slecht. Zowel Mickey als Donald eindigein hoog in de touwen..... Bedenkt dat Donald Duck, wiens stem gemaakt werd door Clarence Nash, zijn debuut maakte in 1934 in Silly Symphony en dat dit gastoptreden één van Donald's eerste publieke optredens was.
