Sweet Hollywaiians

The Japanese group The Sweet Hollywaiians plays music in the rich tradition of the western music of the 1920s and 1930s. hawaiian tunes. swing, calypso and Italian songs. The members of the band are Tomotaka Matsui, Nobumasa Takada, Takashi Nakayama and Kouichi Tsutsumishita. Last year they visited the US and played in Los Angeles with musicians like Janet Klein and Tom Marion, who plays in R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders. Nobumasa Takada, who plays the guitar, mandolin, ukulele and banjo, pointed me to the fact that they have planned to release their first CD on the first of July 2007 and that it will contain 12 or 13 tunes like Caravan, Hula Girl, Singin' The Blues and Milenberg Joys. He shared with us a video performance of this last tune. I'm anxious to hear their new CD as soon as it is released. It sounds great !! It reminds me to the music of Roy Smeck, a 1930s Hawaiian steel guitar player I like very much.

De Japanse groep The Sweet Hollywaiians speelt muziek in de rijke westerse traditie van de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw, zoals hawaiianaanse liedjes, swing en calypso. De leden van de band zijn Tomotaka Matsui, Nobumasa Takada, Takashi Nakayama and Kouichi Tsutsumishita.

Afgelopen jaar bezochten ze de Verenigde Staten en speelden ze in Los Angeles met muzikanten als Janet Klein en Tom Marion, die ook in R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders speelt.

Nobumasa Takada, gitarist, mandolinespeler, ukulele en banjospeler van de band wees me op het feit dat ze in juli 2007 hun eerste CD gaan uitbrengen met daarop een 12tal nummers zoals Caravan, Hula Girl, Singin' The Blues en Milenberg Joys. Hij stuurde me een video van dit laatste nummer zodat we alvast kunnen horen hoe dat klinkt en ........ dat klinkt erg goed. Ik ben dan ook heel benieuwd naar hun eerste album. De muziek doet me denken aan de muziek van Roy Smeck. Ik vond nog een korte film waarin Roy Smeck speelt, om te laten zien waar deze Japanse heren hun ideeën vandaan hebben.
