ARTICLES / ARTIKELEN

The composition O.A. 1926 is one of the best, but less known compositions by Oscar Aleman. He composed it in the 1920s and performed it during his career live on stages on his cavaquinho .... It has been recorded only once late in his career .... The great Japanse stringband The Sweet Holywaiians has revisited the tune and recorded it for its latest album entitled Magic Ukulele Waltz (Jørgen Larsen)

Carline Ray started to play the guitar at the famous All-Girl band The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, but was also active as a bass player, a vocalist and champion for women rights. She passed away last month 88 years old. A few months ago she made her debut as a singer on the first album under her own name Vocal Sides, produced by her daughter, jazz vocalist Catherine Russell. Enjoy the story of this special woman: Carline Ray. (Hans Koert)

CONCERTS / CONCERTEN / FESTIVALS
(Hans Koert)

The place to be. (Hans Koert)

RECENSIES / REVIEWS

(Hans Koert)
Last year Timeless reissued the classical Dizzy Gillespie meets Phil Woods Quintet recordings on its Timeless Jazz Legacy series  Dizzy Gillespie was, December 1986, the crowd puller for the Phil Woods Quintet concerts, fauturing Dizzy as special guest ... a group with skilled jazz musicians like trumpetist Tom Harrell, pianist Hal Galper, bass player Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. With the same line-up Phil Woods performed at the 1986 Heinekens festival and Scheldejazz in Porgy en Bess Jazz club(Terneuzen)(The Netherlands), a concert which was labeled as "Wereldklasse". (Hans Koert)

For many years I have wanted to record with David Liebman, Charles Evans says in the liner notes of his latest album: Subliminal Leaps. Years ago Charles Evans studied at Queens College and David Liebman was one of his teachers ... He has changed my life and music in very profound ways.  A dream came true with this relcording by Charles Evans, an unusual combination of soprano and baritone saxophones as lead melodic instruments.
( Hans Koert)

Giants of Jazz: Hemelse Muziek

( To the English translation.)
Bessie Smith: A Wild Lady with her Blues ( 23rd of August 1928)
The Giants of Jazz: Heavenly Music
The Giants of Jazz tijdens hun laatste optreden in Londen ( 14 november 1971)
Dizzy learning Monk's music - Monk listening to the Parker and Gillespie tunes that the group played.

BESSIE SMITH: A Wild Lady with her Blues (28th of August, 1928)
On Friday the 28th of August 1928, now eighty years ago, Bessie Smith, The Empress of Blues, recorded six sides for Columbia. She was accompanied by a trio featuring Bob Fuller and Ernest Elliott on reeds and Porter Grainer at the piano. On one tune, Poor Man's Blues, Joe Williams must have been playing the trombone, but that take was not released on a 78rpm recording. No bass or rhythm instrument was available.
They recorded: Yes Indeed He Do - Devil's gone git you - You Ought To Be Ashamed - Washwoman's Blues - Slow and Easy Man and the one mentioned before Poor Man´s Blues. They were released on five Columbia records. Lester Young onces described her as She Was a Wild Lady with her Blues
The Giants of Jazz: Heavenly Music

Most All-Star Bands are often founded by accident. Almost every dedicated jazz fan dreams about making his own all-star band; day dreams, you should call that, when he wants to select long gone jazz musicians. George Wein got the chance in 1971. He formed an all-star group of six, almost legendary bebop musicians, which made a two months world tour. Now all these musician play their part in the Heaven's All-Star Jazz Band - I'm sure.

The Giants of Jazz: heavenly music

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
JAZZLAB SERIES ALLSTARS BAND Giants of Jazz: Hemelse Muziek

The album I played last week, titled The Bop Fathers is one of those jazz records that should be in every collection. It has been recorded at one of the numerous concerts by the succesfull formation, labelled as The Giants of Jazz, which made a lenghty tour all around the world, from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Israel to Europe, finishing in London on the 14th of november 1971.

Dizzy Gillespie.

The idea for such a tour was made by George Wein, producer and organisator of jazz concerts ( he started the Newport Jazz Festival.) He wanted to organize a series of concerts with the last surviving great names in bebop for a world tour that lasted two months. He invited Dizzy Gillespie to play the trumpet ( who else?) Sonny Stitt on the saxophone, Kai Winding on the trombone, Al McKibbon on bass, Art Blakey on drums and Thelonious Monk on piano.

The Giants of Jazz in London ( 14th of November, 1971)

A perelous undertaking; not only because these "Giants of Jazz" were all skilled band leaders and jazz musicians, who were used to rule the roost - what would happen when they had to play all six together in one band - for forty-two ( 42 !!) concerts? And what about the weak health of musicians like Thelonious Monk? To make a long story short - there were no major problems.

Thelonious Monk.

It was exciting to see how those six individuals were rehearsing each other's tunes. Dizzy learning Monk's music - Monk listening to the Parker and Gillespie tunes that the group played. Listening, listening, Alyn Shipton writes in his book Groovin' High about Dizzy's life. There was no leader, although Dizzy would do the speaking. Dizzy wouldn't introduce the musicians individual when on stage, so there would be no order of appearance. I do have the CD mentioned above, titled The Bop Fathers which is a registration of the Milan, Italy concert from the 20th of October 1971. Another album is titled The Giants of Jazz and is from the Belgrade concert, the 2nd of November 1971.

The Giants of Jazz ( Belgrade 2nd of november 1971)

The fragment I found is from one of the European concerts in 1971. Can someone inform me where and when this was recorded? If you search on internet you can find a fragment of the Rotterdam concert, but the sound and film have a poor quality.

No problems with Thelonious Monk during this two-month tour - he even made some great recordings after the tour, on the 15th of November 1971 - while in London, which were released by Black Lion in a series of CDs titled Thelonious Monk - The London Collection.

JAZZLAB SERIES ALLSTARS BAND:

GIANTS OF JAZZ: HEMELSE MUZIEK:

Dick Hyman

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
When I was a young adult I was fascinated by the music of Thomas Fats Waller. His recordings were very important for me and filled my collection. I told you more about that in numerous contributions about Fats Waller, like Fats In Facts. I played the piano myself and to be honest, I tried to play a bit stride in the Waller manner, but I learned that we didn't had equal talents. I admired everybody who could play like, or almost like Thomas Fats Waller. Some of those contemporary stride piano players I adored were Ralph Sutton, Neville Dicky and Dick Hyman.
Some time ago I found the 1990 album Dick Hyman Plays Fats Waller which contains fifteen standards, recorded by Thomas Fats Waller in the 1930s. Well known tunes like his Ain't Misbehavin', Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now, Honeysuckle Rose, I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, My Fate Is In Your Hands and Squeeze Me, but also some less known tunes like Stealin' Apples and Bach Up To Me. Most of these tunes are nowadays played by hundreds of bands and well known by every jazz fan ( and even not-so-much jazz fans.) Although tunes like Ain't Misbehavin' and Honeysuckle Rose are great compositions in itselfs, it is hard to find versions that really surprise me again, like they did fourty years ago.
This album shows that Dick Hyman is a great piano player, not a musician, who copies the originals, but the thrill I felt fourty years ago is absent. I think it tells something about my own musical development and nothing about the quality of the music. I had that feeling recently when I listenend for the first time to the interpretations by Aki Takase, who made an album titled Aki Takase Plays Fats Waller, but she has changed the original arrangements completely and made almost new compositions.
When I made a search at the internet I learned that Dick Hyman made dozens of albums dedicated to the piano players of the first half of the XXth century, like Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines,Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum and Erroll Garner, to name some. Not only stride piano players, but bebop and swing musicians too. He made dozens of jazz piano compositions and arrangements, you can find on his officially website .
I was surpised to learn that he accompanied Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker at one of their scarce live recordings on film. It is a famous fragment in which both Bird (= Charlie Parker) as Birk ( = Dizzy Gillespie) receive the Downbeat awards for 1951 in a TV-show out of the hands of Earl Wilson and Leonard Feathers. This 1952 fragment is well known and scarce as their are not much fragments with those famous bebop pioneers in action. Enjoy this fragment, in which Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie receive the awards and play the tune Hot House with Dick Hyman at the piano, Sandy Block on bass and Charlie Smith on drums.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Bekende nummers zoals Ain't Misbehavin', Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now, Honeysuckle Rose, I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, My Fate Is In Your Hands en Squeeze Me, maar ook minder bekende nummers als Stealin' Apples en Bach Up To Me.

Salt Peanuts

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Last night I played myself one of the Tresors du Jazz treasures of the year boxes released by Le Chant du Monde. These boxes are compiled by two great French record colletors and connoissseurs André Francis and Jean Schwarz. I played myself disc number 29, part of the 1953 box, at random, and the first tune that came out of my speakers was Salt Peanuts. This tune was recorded on the 15th of May 1953, 55 years ago, by a band that is often labeled as The Quintet or The Quintet Of The Year, well, if I had to label in I would name it The Quintet of the Century. In my opinion this band must be the Ultimate All-Star Jazz Band of Heaven: Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass and Max Roach on drums. Can you mention a group with so much talent united in one quintet?

The tune Salt Peanuts reminds always to Dizzy Gillispie. He composed the tune late 1941 when he joined the Ella Fitzgerald Orchestra for three weeks, replacing Taft Jordan. During this short stay in the band Dizzy and Kenny Clarke, the drummer man, made an arrangement for a tune, which was based on a theme that was used in Count Basie's tune Basie Boogie, recorded half a year earlier or a riff previously played by John Kirby. Another suggestion is, that Dizzy played this riff in Little John Special and later arranged it to a new song. Never mind, Dizzy Gillespie made it to a tune, that was directly associated with him ..... If you love to sing along, well, it's rather easy: Salt Peanuts Salt Peanuts, that's all. I found a fragment of this tune played by Dizzy Gillespie in front of the Lucky Millinder's Band ca. 1947. Enjoy it .....

The tune became one of the standard tunes in early bebop, with that typically rhythm used in that new music style. One of the best versions is the one mentioned in the intro of this blog: the recordings made at the live concert at The Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada on the 15th of May 1953 with both Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in a great roll.

The tune Salt Peanuts was also used in a part of Dizzy life, when he seriously thought about the possibility to run for President, after the murder of John F. Kennedy and the elections that followed. The tune Salt Peanuts was changed in Vote Dizzy Vote Dizzy. But he soon decided not to be a candidate, as he learned that the presidential elections where not in keeping with the principles of his faith. At the Monterey Jazz Festival he told the audience his decision: Upon reflection, I hereby withdraw, and the audience shouted disapointed ( or relieved?): Ah ! No, no no .....
I found a version, to end this small tribute to this great song, played by a very young Israelian jazz piano player named Ariel, who gives his own interpretation to the tune, together with J.C. Jones on bass.

Can someone tell me more about this yong piano player? Hans Koert keepswinging@live.nl

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

........ as he learned that the presidential elections where not in keeping with the principles of his faith. Ah ! No, no no ..... ( Ah ! Nee, nee nee .... )

Dizzy Gillespie and the Electric Mayhem

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
One of the most important trumpet players in bebop was John Birk Gillespie, nicknamed Dizzy, born in October 1917, who passed away, 75 years old, in January 1993. Both Louis Armstrong as Dizzy Gillespie were the best known jazz musicians by the general public, due to their charisma and sense of humor. Louis of course was easily recognized by his rasping voice, his hearty laugh and white handkerchief; Dizzy: the bell of his upswept trumpet pointing skyward, his heeks distended into hamster-like pouches, and his ubiquitous beret, goatee, horn-rimmed spectacles and pinstripe suit, as described by Alyn Shipton in his book Groovin' High The Life of Dizzy Gillespie.
Both men had a great sense of humour and were always clowning with the audience. Dizzy appeared in some episodes from the well known popular Muppet show and I love to share with you two fragments from episode 413, in which Dizzy sings and plays the trumpet and the bongos.
The fragment starts with inspector LaBrea from the County Environmental Department who wants to monitor the noise level of the show, because there were complains about the noise, especially the trumpets. LaBrea suggests to cut the trumpets from the show, but that's a problem, as Dizzy Gillespie is part of it: Dizzy Gallasky, the great.... violist. Kermit tries to keep LaBrea busy in the meantime with a cup of coffee.
Dizzy and the Electric Mayhem play the St. Louis Blues and Dizzy even gives a small tapdance demonstration.

At the end of the show Inspector LaBrea has given permission to Dizzy to perform with the Electric Mayhem in a kind of mid-eastern casbah playing the tune Swing Low Sweet Cadilac ( free from Swing Low Sweet Chariot), where we can hear Dizzy on bongo, singing and playing the trumpet, with Inspector LaBrea on the saxophone. At the end Dizzy shows Kermit, why he is so jealous of frogs.

A great performance of good old Dizzy.
The recordings for this episode were made on the 24th of July 1979 and three month later, late October. The show was aired on the 28th of February 1980, 28 years ago.

Pieza Desconocida To Have Or Not To Have

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Kermit moet LaBrea afleiden, terwijl Dizzy speelt. You like a cup of coffee?

Een schitterend optreden van good old Dizzy.
