Welcome to Keep (it) Swinging's latest newsletter, with a lot of, I hope,  interesting items and reviews dedicated to jazz and jazz related music from the 1913-2013 period.  The new concert season has started for me with some great concerts, like Jazz by the Sea ( The Netherlands) featuring some ex-Dutch Swing College members and a concert by the US based Dutch saxophone player Ben Van Gelder. Welkom op de nieuwe Keep (it) Swinging nieuwsbrief, met weer een heleboel, ik hoop, interessante bijdragen en recensies waar je als liefhebber van jazz en jazzgerelateerde muziek uit de periode 1913-2013 wat mee kunt ..... Het nieuwe concertseizoen is voor mij weer begonnen met het zonnige Jazz by the Sea Festival (Domburg) en een optreden van het Ben van Gelder Quintet (Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen). Voor ons ligt een grandioos optreden van Fapy Lafertin in Bathmen ( met Quatre Tickets du Swing in het voorprogramma), de Doctor Jazz Dag in Wageningen en een optreden van Nils Wogram in Porgy en Bess: ik kijk er naar uit. The composition O.A. 1926 is one of the best, but less known compositions by Oscar Aleman. He composed it in the 1920s and performed it during his career live on stages on his cavaquinho .... It has been recorded only once late in his career .... The great Japanse stringband The Sweet Holywaiians has revisited the tune and recorded it for its latest album entitled Magic Ukulele Waltz (Jørgen Larsen)

Oscar Alemán's muzikale erfenis blijkt nog steeds populair, zowel in Argentinië als in Europa. Toch zijn zijn eigen composities minder bekend, zoals het vroege O.A. 1926 - Dit nummer, zo zegt de overlevering, was het allereerste nummer dat hij in de jaren twintig als straatschoffie in Sao Paulo ( Brazilië) leerde spelen op zijn eerste cavaquinho, een soort Braziliaanse ukulele. Hij speelde het, tijdens zijn hoogtijdagen bij concerten als solostuk op zijn cavaquinho - gelukkig zijn er wat krakerige radio-opnamen van bewaard.  Pas in 1972 nam hij het daadwerkelijk op ..... Hedendaagse jazzmuzikanten en ukulelespelers lijken het nummer niet goed aan te durven, al koesteren de kenners de versie van Ton van Bergeyk,  gitarist-banjoïst bij de Dutch Swing College Band en heeft nu ook de Japanse "Wizard of the Uke" Mario Takada het opgenomen .... samen met een ander vroeg nummer dat Alemán samen met Gaston Bueno Lobo vastlegde in 1927 voor Victor in 1927: Criolitta.  Carline Ray started to play the guitar at the famous All-Girl band The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, but was also active as a bass player, a vocalist and champion for women rights. She passed away last month 88 years old. A few months ago she made her debut as a singer on the first album under her own name Vocal Sides, produced by her daughter, jazz vocalist Catherine Russell. Jazz By The Sea - Domburg 2013 - al bijna 25 jaar lang een vast ankerpunt voor honderden liefhebbers van de traditionele jazz ....... Volle straten, swingende klanken van straatorkesten, die elkaar als standwerkers vliegen proberen af te vangen. En tegenover het Badhotel een deja vu naar de film Jazz on a Summer's Day .. weer even terug naar de jaren vijftig - Newport 1958 - weer even jong ..... (Hans Koert)

 Menig Nederlands Jazzfestival zal jaloers gekeken hebben naar de aantallen bezoekers, die zich in de volgepakte straten van Domburg in een ongedwongen sfeer en een heerlijk zonnetje, genoten van de vele optredens op straat en op de verschillende podia, waarvoor gedanst en geflirt werd op vertrouwde swingende klanken  ...... door een enthousiast publiek dat daardoor zichtbaar vijfentwintig jaar jonger werd .....  Wat jazzliefhebbers al lang vermoedden, werd op Jazz By The Sea weer eens bewezen: Is Jazzmuziek het geheime recept voor een eeuwige jeugd? Op het hoofdpodium bracht de George Kaatee Jazzband het verleden tot leven (Hans Koert)

  

Op zondagmiddag 23 september 2013 was Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) ongetwijfeld the best place to be .... als je tenminste niet van de kermis houdt. Het kwintet van Ben van Gelder, up-and-coming talent, presenteerde niet onverdienstelijk zijn nieuwe cd met zijn Amerikaanse vrienden, bijgestaan door Reinier Baas op gitaar.  Een mooi begin van een seizoen vol fascinerende jazzconcerten in Porgy en Bess .......  The place to be. Opnamen Dizzy Gillespie meets Phil Woods Quintet heruitgebracht in de Timeless Jazz Legacy serie.  Uiteraard was Dizzy Gillespie in december 1986 de publiekstrekker tijdens de concerten van het Phil Woods Quintet met Dizzy als gast, maar de man met de pet, altsaxofonist Phil Woods leidde een voortreffelijke band met musici als trompettist Tom Harrell, pianist Hal Galper, bassist Steve Gilmore en slagwerker Bill Goodwin. Met dit kwintet was hij in 1986 o.a. te horen in Rotterdam en in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) tijdens het Scheldejazzfestival, waar het concert werd samengevat als "Wereldklasse". (Hans Koert) 

 Last year Timeless reissued the classical Dizzy Gillespie meets Phil Woods Quintet recordings on its Timeless Jazz Legacy series  Dizzy Gillespie was, December 1986, the crowd puller for the Phil Woods Quintet concerts, fauturing Dizzy as special guest ... a group with skilled jazz musicians like trumpetist Tom Harrell, pianist Hal Galper, bass player Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. With the same line-up Phil Woods performed at the 1986 Heinekens festival and Scheldejazz in Porgy en Bess Jazz club(Terneuzen)(The Netherlands), a concert which was labeled as "Wereldklasse". For many years I have wanted to record with David Liebman, Charles Evans says in the liner notes of his latest album: Subliminal Leaps. Years ago Charles Evans studied at Queens College and David Liebman was one of his teachers ... He has changed my life and music in very profound ways.  A dream came true with this relcording by Charles Evans, an unusual combination of soprano and baritone saxophones as lead melodic instruments. Ben van den Dungen werkte mee aan tientallen albums met groepen als Nueva Manteca, The Cubop City Bigband, the FraFra Sound en Tango Extremo en eigenlijk miste in dit rijtje een album met een eigen kwartet.  Deze omissie is nu rechtgetrokken met de onlangs verschenen plaat Ciao City - gewoon een album met heerlijke muziek: een cd om naar uit te kijken .... Carline Ray, debuteerde als gitariste in The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, maar was ook actief als zangeres, bassiste en voorvechtster voor vrouwenemancipatie. Ze overleed vorige maand op 88-jarige leeftijd. Dit voorjaar debuteerde ze met een eigen album, geproduceerd door haar dochter, Jazzzangeres Catherine Russell, getiteld Vocal Sides: Over een vrouw die ruim 65-jaar lang bewees binnen de jazz haar mannetje te staan  MY JAZZ LINKS (Hans Koert).

Walter Malosetti - Argentijns jazzgitarist, componist en leraar aan diverse conservatoria, inspirator voor tientallen jonge Argentijnse jazzgitaristen, overleed onlangs in Argentinië. Hij speelde o.a. bij Oscar Alemán, maar was vooral een inspiratiebron voor tientallen jonge Argentijnse musici, die de jazzgitaar wilden leren bespelen. Walter Malosetti is 82 jaar oud geworden. Het jubilerende Doctor Jazz Magazine, één van de oudste jazzbladen, dat nog viermaal per jaar verschijnt, heeft, ter ere van haar vijftigjarig bestaan een schitterende dubbelcd uitgebracht met juweeltjes uit de jazzgeschiedenis, waar verwende platenverzamelaars van muziek op 78-toeren de vingers bij aflikken .... nooit eerder uitgebrachte opnamen - alternatieve takes  - test- en privéopnamen en radiouitzendingen. Dinnertime for Hungry Collectors - Cd één bevat vooral opnamen van big bands - cd twee kleine groepen: Een mooi  geschenk voor iedereen die 78-toeren snel genoeg vindt .MY JAZZ LINKS (Hans Koert)

 

It must be a hard time for 78-rpm record collectors …… You won’t find your stuff at garage sales anymore ….. And how to find the last record shops? Where lp’s and cd’s were sold? …. Doctor Jazz Magazine knows what record collectors want .. Due to its 50th birthday the magazine selected almost 50 collectors items for its Dinnertime for Hungry Collectors, a must have for all dedicated collectors who can live with 78rpm .....  MY JAZZ LINKS ( Hans Koert)

 

Wie Keith Jarrett's Standard Trio niet kent zou eens de moeite moeten nemen te luisteren naar zijn laatste cd, getitled Somewhere.  ECM bracht deze opnamen uit 2009 uit, een concert opgenomen in Luzern, waarin Keith Jarrett met Gary Peacock op bas en Jack DeJohnette laten horen hoe standards als Solar van Miles Davis en Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea horen te klinken ...... Niet voor niets wordt Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio beschouwd als de norm voor elk hedendaags jazz pianotrio! MY JAZZ LINKS ( Hans Koert)

 

Nat Adderley: Julian Cannonball Adderley younger brother; A position which had its pros and cons. After the decease of Charlie Parker, Julian Cannonball Adderley was labeled as his successor, and Nat was not able to hold a candle in him; he was overshadowed by his brother … in both senses of the words. They played together for years, but when Cannonball passed away Nat continued the quintet ...... and tried to find alto saxophonists that could play like his brother. Timeless remastered the 1992 Cologne concert by the Nat Adderley Quintet with Vincent Herring on alto sax ... in its series Timeless Jazz Legacy.  MY JAZZ LINKS ( Hans Koert)

 

Kenny Werner: Wie hem ooit heeft gehoord, roemt zijn vernuftige improvisaties, zijn “luchtige speelvreugde en abrupte wendingen” en bevlogen improvisaties .... Samen met Hein Van de Geyn en Hans Oosterhout gingen ze de uitdaging aan ..... We vertrouwden op onze oren, onze intuitie en wachtten af hoe de muziek zich zou ontvouwen ... Ten months ago I first heard the Mark Masters Ensemble in its album dedicated to the music of Duke Ellington, so I was very anxious to hear Mark's latest album, entitled Everything You Did. This album is dedicated to the music of the rockband Steely Dan and the compositions of its founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.  Another proof that Mark Masters is an excellent arranger. Recently Catherine Russell released her fourth album since she decided to go solo .... In 2004, then 48 years young, she decided to stop as a background vocalist behind great names like David Bowie and Paul Simon and to change course. In 2006 she released her first solo album, simply entitled Cat, followed by Sentimental Streak (2008) and Inside This Heart of Mine.  Her fourth album is entitled Strictly Romancin' and contains more then a dozen songs, accompanied by her regular quartet, which includes Matt Munisteri (guitar and banjo) - Mark Shane (piano) -  Lee Hudson (double bass) and Mark McLean (drums) and several guest players.

Catherine Russell was born and raised in a musical family, which had its roots in the jazz scene of the 1930s. In most reviews you can read about her roots, about the fact that her father was the well known band leader Luis Russell, is discussed detailed, so I won't  stir up that ..... Her mother, Carline Ray, however, was a guitar player in bands like the 1940s International Sweethearts of Rhythm.

Catherine tells, that she dreamed to play a duet with her mother, who was one of the members of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm in the 1940s (she was the guitar player); Later she took the double bass and recorded with Jimmy Smith, and performed in bands with Red Richard and Ruth Brown. This dream came true in her latest album; He's All I Need is a traditional gospel, sung and dedicated to Sister Rosetta Tharpe.  The great vocalist Mary Lou Williams, another singer that inspired Catherine to make this album, did work with her mother during the early 1970s; Catherine honoured her in the great tune: Satchel Mouth Baby!, which was recorded by Mary Lou and her Chosen Five in March 1944 for Asch.

Enjoy a short trailer in which Catherine tells you about the singers and tunes, that inspired her for this great album:

The album contains standards, like I'm in the Mood for Love and No More, sung by Billie Holiday during the 1940s and compositions like the dated Dixieland tune Everybody Loves My Baby, which changes into the hands of Catherine into a fresh new tune, as if it was composed yesterday. This is, i.m.o., the strength of Catherine Russell selected repertoire and her surplus value, that makes her so popular to a forgotten group of jazz fans.

The generation,that was raised in a time when swing was popular music, ruminates the records from the past and seldom hear these songs played by a new generation of musicians, who play these famous standards as if they were written yesterday, instead of (half) a century ago .... The way Catherine sings Everybody Loves My Baby is a good example ... it gives the same sensation as in the 1920s the flapper wifes must have had when they heard these words for the very first time ......... When my baby kisses me upon my rosy cheeks, I have to let those kisses be. Don't wash my face for weeks .....

One of my favorites is her swinging version of I'm Checkin' Out, Goom' Bye, originally sung by Ivie Anderson, which contains a small, but great dialogue between the vocalist and John Allred on trombone. Love to share with you part of this great rather unknown Strayhorn composition:

I heard Catherine singing at a short in-store concert at the Drvkkery bookshop and record store  in Middelburg (The Netherlands), October 2010, together with piano player Mark Shane and she surprised me and learned me that even the traditional jazz and swing repertoire can still fascinate and inspire, if it is performed by professional musicians, who know how this repertoire should be played ...... Catherine will be in this part of the world (Europe) next month, so try to join one of her concerts and if you are not around, you stil can enjoy her latest album Strictly Romancin’

Een jaar geleden nam Catherine Russell haar nieuwste album op, getiteld Inside This Heart of Mine. Het is haar derde album onder eigen naam in enkele jaren tijd. In 2006 kwam haar debuutalbum uit, getiteld Cat, dat door toonaangevende critici als één van de opwindendste debuutalbums bestempeld werd. Een paar jaar later volgde Sentimental Streak, dat in 2008 door Francis Davis uitgeroepen werd tot Vocal Album of the Year in de 2008 Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll.

Ze werd geboren in 1956 in een muzikaal gezin in New York City en de jazzmuziek moet haar met de paplepel zijn ingegoten. Haar vader was Luis Russell, geboren in Panama in augustus 1902, die op zijn 17de naar naar New Orleans verhuisde, waar hij in de wijk Storyville een bestaan opbouwde als pianist in bars en honky tonks, voordat hij zich in Chicago vestigde. Daar vond hij een plaatsje in het orkest van Joe King Oliver. Hij maakte zijn eerste plaat onder eigen naam al in maart 1926 met zijn Luis Russel's Hot Six. Hij verhuisde eind jaren twintig naar New York waar hij het orkest van George Howe onder eigen naam ging leiden als the Luis Russell Orchestra; de band die in de jaren dertig zou uitgroeien tot de begeleidingsband van Louis Armstrong. In 1948 hield hij het drukke artiestenbestaan voor gezien en stapte uit de muziek. Hij werd chauffeur, snoepverkoper en leidde zelfs een nachtclub. Haar moeder is al even muzikaal. Carline Ray is zangeres en speelde vanaf 1946 elektrische gitaar in damesorkesten zoals the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Ze werd zangeres bij het orkest van Erskine Hawkins in 1948 en trad sinds die tijd op met haar eigen groep, het Carline Ray Trio en bij talloze plaatselijke bands.
Tijdens haar muzikale carrière wist zo ook nog eens verschillende opleidingen aan de Juilliard en Manhattan Conservatoria af te ronden. Gedurende de jaren zeventig speelde ze bij de Skitch Henderson Big Band en leidde ze groepen met Melba Liston en pianist Nina Seldon. Ze trad ook op met Mary Lou Williams en Wynton Marsalis en is nu nog steeds actief in de muziek. Als kleuter kwam Cat al vroeg in aanraking met de jazz en heel wat bekende jazzmuzikanten waren kind aan huis. In een home-video avant-la-lettre legde Luis haar vast op de knie bij uncle Satch ( = Louis Armstrong) - blijkbaar zeer tot haar ongenoegen overigens. Ze groeide dus op in een gezin doordrenkt met jazzmuziek. Als jong volwassene ging ze, net als haar moeder, naar de School of Music and Art en studeerde af op Theater aan de The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Ze ging als beroeps zingen in een gospelgroep, geleid door Carrie Smith en reisde o.a. door Europa. Haar moeder ging mee als bassist. Terug in de VS werd ze lid van Jimmy Vivino’s Little Big Band en kreeg ze een rol in de N.Y. Rock 'n Soul Revue. Ze zong in achtergrondkoortjes van allerlei bands, zoals die van Steely Dan en ze zong achter Paul Simon, David Bowie en allerlei aan de weg timmerende popmuzikanten van dat moment. Toen ze als vijftiger haar eerste eigen plaat maakte had ze dus al een heel leven in de muziek achter de rug.

Toen ik voor het eerst over Catherine Russell las in het tijdschrift Jazzism, waar een artikel in stond getiteld Het moet terug naar de Roots - De historische inspiratie van Catherine Russell geschreven door Coen de Jonge, had ik alleen ooit gehoord dat Luis Russel's dochter net als haar vader in de jazzmuziek gegaan was en optrad als zangeres. Nu ben ik niet zo'n fan van al die hetzelfde klinkende poppy jazzzangeressen, waarvan er dertien in een dozijn gaan, dus had ik ook bij Catherine mijn reserves. Toen ik haar laatste plaat opzette, (zeg je dat ook bij een cd?), werd ik verrast door de titelsong: Inside This Heart Of Mine. Het nummer, dat meestal slechts aangeduid wordt als Inside, had ik nog niet vaak horen zingen in een hedendaagse uitvoering. Oorspronkelijk werd het nummer in april 1938 opgenomen door Fats Waller met zijn ( voor deze gelegenheid uitgebreide) Rhythm. Ook het derde nummer We The People, werd in datzelfde jaar 1938 door Fats Waller and his Rhythm vastgelegd in de groef. Het begint met een piano intro á la Fats door pianist Mark Shane, die Catherine zal begeleiden tijdens haar Nederlandse tournee. Trompettist Jon-Erik Kellso improviseert op de cd in een stijl die doet denken aan Herman Autrey en gitarist Matt Munisteri heeft goed geluisterd naar Al Casey, die beide speelden in het oorspronkelijke Rhythmsextet. Wat een geweldige muzikanten heeft Cat om haar heen verzameld voor deze mooie plaat. De nummers Long, Strong and Consecutive en Troubled Waters zijn beide gewijd aan Duke Ellington, waar in laatstgenoemde nummer Ivie Anderson schitterde in de oorspronkelijke opname uit 1934. Cat kent haar roots - niet verwonderlijk natuurlijk met zo'n achtergrond en dat is ook de reden dat ik zo uitgebreid over haar vader en moeder heb geschreven. Geen gladde retro-music, geen kopieën van het origineel, maar nieuwe frisse vertolkingen van vergeten nummers door een gepassioneerd zangeres en een geweldig begeleidingsorkest, dat elk nummer kan laten klinken als of het gisteren pas geschreven is. Elk nummer op de plaat heeft een historische achtergrond en de bronnen staan keurig op de plaat vermeld. Ze eindigt met twee oudjes uit de jaren twintig. Struttin' With Some Barbecue is zo'n afgesabbeld nummer, dat we kennen van Dixielandbandjes en zo speelt de band het ook, maar als Catherine haar mond open doet, wordt het nummer nieuw en fris. Het nummer werd ooit bekend door Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. Met Slow as Molasses, ( = Traag als stroop) eert Catherine haar vader, door een nummer te kiezen uit zijn muzikale nalatenschap. Dit nummer, oorspronkelijk in april 1929 door de Jungle Town Stompers aan de groef van een oude Okeh 78-toerenplaat toevertrouwd, was één van de bands die geleid werd door haar vader; de tekst is pas onlangs geschreven door Rachelle Garniez. Catherine Russell en haar pianist Mark Shane zullen de komende weken een tournee maken door ons land. Op 24 oktober treedt ze op in het TV programma Kunststof TV en het radioprogramma Met het oog op morgen ( Radio 1).

Zeeuwse jazzliefhebbers krijgen een unieke kans Catherine te ontmoeten in De Drvkkery in Middelburg op zaterdag 23 oktober. Ze zal dan een kort concert geven waarna gelegenheid is haar cd's te kopen en te laten signeren. ( 13.00 - 14.00 uur)

Catherine Russell lanceerde haar eerste eigen plaat toen ze de vijftig al gepasseerd was - nu is haar derde al weer uitgebracht: Inside This Heart of Mine. Daarvoor was ze jarenlang actief in achtergrondkoortjes op talrijke popalbums, maar was haar roots, de jazz, nooit vergeten. Cat is de dochter van de legendarische bandleider uit de jaren twintig en dertig, Luis Russell en haar moeder, die nog steeds zingt, is Carline Ray, ooit lid van the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Cat past niet in de rij van aanstormende jazzzangeresjes, die de wereld als jazzy popsterretjes willen gaan veroveren - nee, Cat's kracht ligt in het feit dat ze met beide benen stevig in de jazztraditie staat en dat ze met haar geweldige stem vergeten juweeltjes weer tot leven brengt. Early this year Catherine Russell released her latest album, entitled Inside This Heart of Mine. It is her 3rd album within a few years. In 2006 she released her debut album Cat which was labelled by notorious critics as The most exciting debut album I've heard in a long time ( Quote: Will Friedwald) and a few years later, in 2008, her second album Sentimental Streak was released and became Vocal Album of the Year by Francis Davis in the 2008 Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll.

Catherine Russell, born in New York City in 1956, made her debut album under her own name when she was in her fifties and that is, of course, remarkable. During the last four years she become known as a jazz singer which brought her into the major world jazz festivals, like the Chicago Blues Festival, the Jazz Festivals of Montreal, Bern, Rochester and Panama and the Lotus World Music Festival, the I Love Jazz Festival in Brazil and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam summer 2010. This month she will tour along several venues in Belgium and Holland. Born in a musical family in 1956 in New York City she must have been learned about jazz music at her mother's knee. Her father was Luis Russell, born in Panama in August 1902, who moved to New Orleans at the age of 17 and had been a great piano player in the bars and honky tonks of Storyville, before he moved to Chicago, where he found a place in the orchestra of Joe King Oliver. He made the first recording under his own name as the Russell Hot Six in March 1926. He moved to New York and took over George Howe's band and renamed it as the Luis Russell Orchestra, which would become for a decade the band to accompany Louis Armstrong. In 1948 he retired and abandoned music and became a driver, a candy shopkeeper and a night club owner. Her mother's name is Carline Ray, who was a vocalist and also played the electric guitar. She became in 1946 a member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. She was the singer of the Erskine Hawkins band in 1948 and since then she's to be found in numerous local bands and had her own group, Carline Ray Trio. She was a holder of advanced degrees in music from Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music. During the 1970s she played in the Skitch Henderson Big Band and led groups by Melba Liston and piano player Nina Seldon. She also performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. And, nowadays, she's still active in music. As an infant Catherine met all those jazz musicians that were regular visitors and clambered onto Satchmo's lap and she raised in a house filled with jazz sounds. She went to the High School of Music and Art and received a degree in Theatre at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She became a professional singer in a gospel group, directed by Carrie Smith and toured with that group in Europe. Her mother played the bass in that group. Back in the States she became a member of the Jimmy Vivino’s Little Big Band and got a role in the N.Y. Rock 'n Soul Revue. She became a backing vocalist in bands like Steely Dan, sung with Paul Simon, David Bowie and numerous trend setting pop artists of the day. So, when she started a solo career in her fifties, she could already look back upon a long career in popular music.

When I first read about Catherine Russell in the Dutch Jazzism magazine in an article Het moet terug naar de Roots - De historische inspiratie van Catherine Russell ( = Back to the roots – the historical inspiration by Catherine Russell) by Coen De Jonge, I hadn't heard about her. At first sight some people might label her as a one of those vocalist a dime a dozen, but nothing if further from the truth and the Dutch audience has the opportunity this month to learn that Catherine Russell is a gifted vocalist that knows her roots.

When I first heard the title song of her new album, Inside This Heart Of Mine I was astonished to hear this tune sung by a contemporary artist as I only knew it from the great 1938 Fats Waller version normally known with its short name Inside. And what to think about We The People? Another Fats Waller tune, seldom heard since Fats recorded it on the 1st of July, 1938. It opens with a great piano intro á la Fats Waller, by Mark Shane, who can play stride like Fats, and will join Catherine during her Dutch tour. Trumpet player Jon-Erik Kellso improvises on the album in a style similiar to that of Herman Autrey and guitar player Matt Munisteri has listened well to Al Casey, both musicians from Waller's Rhythm. Great to hear this famous sextet revived!
What a great musicians Catherine has invited to accompany her on this album. The tunes Long, Strong and Consecutive and Troubled Waters are both dedicated to Duke Ellington where vocalist Ivie Anderson shined in the latter in a 1934 Duke Ellington recording. Catherine knows her roots and that's why I started this small review with an extensive portrait of both her parents. No retro-music, no copies of the originals, but great, almost forgotten tunes, sung by a passionate vocalists as if its was written yesterday .................. Each song in the album has a story and goes back into the history of jazz music. She ends the album with two oldies from the 1920s. Struttin' With Some Barbecue is a dated tune known from numerous Dixieland versions and that's the way Catherine's band plays it, but when Catherine starts to sing it sounds new and fresh. This track refers to Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. In Slow as Molasses Catherine honours her father's musical heritage. This tune was originally recorded for Okeh in April 1929 as an instrumental by the Jungle Town Stompers, one of the bands directed by her father. The words were added by Rachelle Garniez. It has that great 1920s sound ( with Matt Munisteri on banjo!), thanks to that great band that accompanies her on this album.

Catherine Russell and her piano player Mark Shane will make a tour along Dutch venues. On the 23rd of October they will give a small in-store concert at the Drvkkery - a book shop and record store - in Middelburg ( 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.). I'll hope to join that!

On the 24th of October they can be heard on the Dutch TV-program Kunststof TV and the radio program Met het oog op morgen ( Radio 1).

Before that she was active as a back ground singer on numerous pop albums, but now, on this turning point in her life, she seems to follow in her parents footsteps: singing jazz music. Catherine Russell is the daughter of the legendary band leader Luis Russell and Carline Ray, member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. She's not one of those ten a penny vocalists, as she knows her roots and loves to share it on her album.
