Tresors du Jazz

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

The series Les Tresors du Jazz contains three boxes of five or ten compilation records of some years early 1950s. In fact the year 1952 (5), 1953 (10) and 1954 (10) have been released. Two compilations with 10 records each, about the early jazz periods, have also been isued: 1898-1943 and 1944 - 1951. I don't have these boxes.

It is a great series. I have selected one of the CDs, number 42, to show you its great variation and because this ones happens to be the CD I played regulary last months.

The tracks on the records in the series are in chronological order. Number 42 contains 19 tracks from the period of 25 August up to 25th of October 1954.
When I make you a list of jazz musicians on this record it could suggest that it is one of those numerous The Best Of ....... , but nothing is further from the truth. André Francis and Jean Schwarz made a selection of great tunes as they were available and the records they selected are all Pieces of Art !!

These are the musicians on this particulary disc, disc 42: Art Pepper, Clifford Brown & Max Roach, Cal Tjader, Leith Stevens, Milt Bernhart, Shorty Rogers, Red Norvo, Thelonious Monk, Lou Levy, Count Basie, Billie Holiday ( who's face is on the cover of this compilation), Count Basie, Lester Young, Sarah Vaughan, Virgil Gonsalves, Arne Domnerus, Barara Carroll and Sonny Rollins.

Some musicians are well known, others relatively unknown, but their music is always remarkable !!

The boxes contain a detailed booklet with recording information.

If you happen to find one of these three year boxes, don't hesitate. Buy it !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

I second the motion. This is a series that is not your usual "how can we profit from the back catalog" kind of compilation. Two French aficionados, André Francis and Jean Schwartz, pick the selections from their extensive collections based simply on what they like best and feel is representative.

Brownie said: 'Jazz in Paris' and 'Trésors du Jazz' are two different series.
The Trésors are boxes (usually 10CDs) that showcase the best of the jazz sides from a specific year.
Volume 6 which is just out illustrates the year 1955.

Selection of the material is taken care by veteran French jazz radio producer André Francis. Mastering is in the hands of veteran musicologist/composer Jean Schwarz.

A very worthy enterprise taking advantage of the European 50-year copyright laws.

Both Tjobbe and Tom announced that Volume 6 covering 1955 is already announced for release end of October (so now).

So this is great news.
