Bobby Previte and Archie Shepp in Middelburg

On Saturday night, the 10th of May 2008, two bands, Bobby Previte's New Bump and jazz veteran Archie Shepp, performed at the attractive inner court of the abbey of Middelburg, in the southwest of The Netherlands. This double concert was part of the second International Jazz Festival in Middelburg, sceduled the 9th up to the 12th of May 2008 on location all through the city.

The first band to perform was Bobby Previte's New Bumb. Bobby Previte is a New York drummer, whose funky band could easily entertain the hundred people gathered in front of the stage in the inner court of the abbey.

The New Bumb featured Bobby Previte on drums, Ellery Eskelin on tenor saxophone, Bill Ware on vibraphone and Brad Jones on bass.
For me ( and most of the audience), this band was totally unknown and they surprised us with there balanced and energetic performance.

Bobby Previte, the leader of the band, showed that he is a giant on his instrument, but never dominated the performance. The music they played was from their new album, titled Set The Alarm For Monday released, as Bobby announced, ten minutes ago. Some tunes from that album they performed were I'm On To Her, There Was Something In My Drink and Where You Followed? The music reminds to the recordings made by Eric Dolphy, with Ellery Eskelin, the headed saxophone player in the role of Dolphy and Bill Ware on vibes as Bobby Hutcherson

Bill Ware was a surprise for me. Since Bobby Hutcherson ( I heard him playing July 2002 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in his McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet) the vibraphone is no longer the instrument to use in the swing and bop tradition exclusively. He played a great lengthly intro during the concert before an audience as quiet as a mouse; the only annoying noise was the instruments rotor motor - a moment to remember. The music played by Bill Ware on his vibraharp was almost hypnotizing, waves of sounds, impressions like in a movie soundtrack.

Archie Shepp ( Middelburg - May 2008)

The second concert of that evening was by veteran saxophone player Archie Shepp. Archie Shepp, almost 71 years old, is a legend in jazz history - being one of the leading musicians in the avant garde jazz of the 1960s, the so-called New Thing, together with musicians like Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, John Tchicai and, again, Bobby Hutcherson. With his release of the 1964 album Four For Trane, four tunes dedicated to John Coltrane, the New Thing was born. That music caused a great deal of controversy in jazz in those days and it is remarkable to learn that almost 50 years later it has found its place in the development of jazz.

Archie Shepp visibly enjoys being treated as a star. The way he enters the stage, his demands, like special 1960s microphones, because they reproduce my sound better, his command for applause with a small bow right after his solos (before any one could started the applause) ....... it all belongs to his act.

During the concert he performed tunes like Hope No. 2, dedicated to the great piano player Elmo Hope. In the standard I Can't Give you Anything But Love he shows that he is also a great singer; with a strong sound which reminded me to the old blues shouters like Jimmy Five By Five Rushing. Archie Shepp is also known for his political crusade for equal rights for the black community, against racial injustice, his sympathy for the Black Power movement by Malcolm X. He loves to use this subject in his songs. One of those song about black community is titled Mama Rose, dedicated to his grandmother now in the coffin. It is a rather melancholic song.

Tom McClung ( Middelburg - May 2008)

Archie Shepp brought three more musicans on stage: Tom McClung at the piano, Wayne Dockery on bass and Steve McCraven on drums. Frank Lacy, who was billed playing the trombone was absent. For me Tom McClung was a surprise, as he played some very good piano solos. Steve McCraven happened to be a skilled drummer and illustrated the way the first negroes had to make their music in the early days. My grandmother was a slave, Archie Shepp explained, and they didn't had any instruments like saxophones and those horns. They only made music with the things the had in the house - with pots and pans or even their body and hambones.

During the second half of the concert Archie Shepp seemed to liked the concert and brought some great blues like Round and Round, sometimes almost like Rhythm and Blues.
At the final number, the encore, Archie Shepp played a beautiful ballad Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair in which he showed his fasination for the good old tenor players Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. NEW ORPHEANS:
The New Orpheans Big Band from Heinkenszand ( The Netherlands) has scedulded monthly concerts at the Manhuistuin in Goes in the southwest part of the Netherlands. These concerts start at 11.00 a.m. and will be held on the first Sunday of each months during the summer season.

Op zaterdagavond 10 mei 2008 traden op het abdijplein van Middelburg twee bands op, Bobby Previte's New Bump en de jazz veteraan Archie Shepp, tijdens het International Jazz Festival. Dit festival wordt gehouden vanaf 9 mei 2008 tot en met tweede pinksterdag, 12 mei 2008.

De eerste band, die acte de presence gaf was Bobby Previte's New Bumb. Bobby Previte is een slagwerker uit New York, wiens funky band het verzamelde publiek op het sfeervolle abdijplein met gemak inpakte.

De groep New Bumb bestaat uit Bobby Previte op slagwerk, Ellery Eskelin op tenorsax, Bill Ware op vibrafoon en Brad Jones op bas.
Voor mij ( en velen uit het publiek denk ik) was het een eerste kennismaking met deze band, die een energieke maar vooral uitgebalanceerd concert gaf.

Bobby Previte, de leider van de band, liet tijdens zijn optreden zien dat hij een geweldig drummer is, maar waakte ervoor niet de hele voorstelling te beheersen. De muziek die ze ten gehore brachten is afkomstig van hun laaatste album getiteld Set The Alarm For Monday dat, volgens Bobby, nog maar net tien minuten geleden uitgebracht was. Ze speelden titels als I'm On To Her, There Was Something In My Drink en Where You Followed? De muziek deed me denken aan die van Eric Dolphy, met Ellery Eskelin, de saxofonist-met-de-hoed, in de rol van Dolphy en vibrafonist Bill Ware als Bobby Hutcherson.

Bill Ware was voor mij de verrassing van dit optreden. Sinds Bobby Hutcherson ( Ik hoorde hem spelen tijdens het Northsea Jazzfestival juli 2002 in het McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet) is de vibrafoon niet langer het instrument bij uitstek om swing of mainstream op te spelen. Bill Ware liet in een lang uitgeplozen intro tijdens het concert horen hoe hij het publiek kan boeien, dat muisstil zat te luisteren; alleen de motor van de vibrafoon was het enige storende bijgeluid - een moment om vast te houden. De muziek die Bill Ware op zijn vibes liet horen was bijna hypnotizerend, golven van geluid, impressies, die soms leken op een soundtrack. Een schitterend optreden .....

Archie Shepp ( Middelburg - mei 2008)

Het tweede concert van de avond was voor veteraan Archie Shepp op tenor- en sopraansax. Archie Shepp, binnenkort wordt hij 71, is al bij leven een legende uit de jazzgeschiedenis - hij was één van de grondleggers van de avant garde jazz in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw, de zogenaamde New Thing, samen met musici als Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, John Tchicai en, alweer, Bobby Hutcherson. Met de uitgave van zijn album Four For Trane in 1964, vier nummer gewijd aan John Coltrane, werd de New Thing geboren. Deze muziek deed nog al wat stof doen opwaaien in de wereld van de jazz en het is dan ook goed te ontdekken dat na bijna vijftig jaar alles toch een plekje in de ontwikkeling van de jazz gekregen heeft.

Archie Shepp geniet zichtbaar van de aandacht die hij als ster kreeg. Je merk dat aan de manier waarop hij opkomt, zijn speciale wensen: I like 1960s microphones, because they reproduce my sound better - sorry for that ( = Ik prefereer microfoons uit de jaren zestig, die mijn geluid beter weergeven - excuses hiervoor), zijn vragen om applaus, door een kort buiginkje, direct na een solo, terwijl het applaus nog moet beginnen .... het hoort er allemaal bij.

Tijdens het concert speelden ze nummers als Hope No. 2, gewijd aan de grote pianist Elmo Hope. In het bekende I Can't Give You Anything But Love laat hij horen dat hij ook een groot zanger is, met de rauwe luide stem, die me deed denken aan de grote bluesshouters zoals Jimmy Five By Five Rushing. Archie Shepp is ook bekend geworden door zijn kruistocht tegen de onderdrukking en rechtsongelijkheid van de zwarte bevolking, zijn sympathie voor de Black Power beweging van Malcolm X. Hij houdt ervan deze problematiek uit te spinnen in zijn nummers. Eén van die nummers is het enigzins deprimerende nummer Mama Rose, gewijd an zijn grootmoeder now in the coffin (= nu dood en begraven). Een regelrechte aanklacht tegen het Amerikaanse maatschappij.

Tom McClung ( Middelburg - mei 2008)

Archie Shepp had drie ervaren muzikanten meegebracht: Tom McClung aan de piano, Wayne Dockery op bas en Steve McCraven op slagwerk. Frank Lacy, die aangekondigd stond op trombone, was niet meegekomen. Voor mij was Tom McClung de verrassing van het concert; hij speelde enkele schitterende solo's op de vleugel. Steve McCraven ontpopte zich als een ervaren drummer en liet zien, op verzoek van Archie, hoe de negers vroeger muziek maakten. My grandmother was a slave ( = Mijn grootmoeder was een slaaf), memoreerde Archie, and they didn't had any instruments like saxophones and those horns. (= en toen hadden ze nog geen instrumenten zoals saxofoons en zo). They only made music with the things they had in the house - with pots and pans or even their hambones. ( = Ze konden alleen muziek maken met de dingen die ze thuis voor handen hadden zoals potten en pannen en je handen en billen); hetgeen Steve deomstreerde.

Tijdens de tweede helft van het concert leek Archie zelf ook plezier te krijgen in het optreden en liet een paar mooie bluesnummers horen zoals Round and Round, hangend tegen de Rhythm and Blues aan.
Het laatste nummer, de toegift, greep Archie Shepp aan om een schitterende ballad te spelen, Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair, waarin hij liet horen dat hij goed geluisterd heeft naar de grote saxofoon-leermeesters Coleman Hawkins en Ben webster.

Middelburg Jazz for Modernists

Within a few weeks Middelburg will be the centre of jazz in Zeeland, the province in the southwestern part of The Netherlands with its second International Jazz Festival Middelburg, sceduled from the 9th up to the 12th of May 2008 in the centre of Middelburg
There has been a jazz festival in Middelburg for years, with bands that played in the more traditional jazz styles, but the festival attendance was declining and the bands, walking through the streets of the city, gave the festival and the jazz music a rather out-of-date impression being a kind of music that went out long ago. The organisation of the International Jazz Festival wants to show the people of Zeeland, that jazz is still alive and has more aspects then straw heads alone. It is a pleasure to learn that the festival concentrates now on the contemporaty jazz styles too, with musicians that are popular to a growing audience. Today I love to introduce you to some of the great names in modern jazz that will perform in the innercourt of the abbey - tomorrow I wil introduce you to the more classic jazz bands.
On Saturday evening, the 10th of May 2008 one can enjoy two concerts at the innercourt of the abbey: The first one is with Bobby Previte's New Bumb, a talked-about band featuring the New York drummer Bobby Previte as leader. He is in Europe for a ten-days-tour with his quartet that ends in Middelburg. The members of the New Bumb are Ellery Eskelin on tenor saxophone, Bill Ware on vibraphone, Brad Jones on bass and Bobby Previte on drums. The legendary Archie Shepp will be the second one for that evening that will perform on the cozy innercourt of the abbey. This man is really a legend in jazz, who launched the free jazz, but was inspired in his music by great saxophone players like Coleman Hawkins. He is known for his fight for equal rights for the blacks, as presented by Malcolm X. He will visit Middelburg with his quintet, featuring himself on the tenor saxophone, Frank Lacy on trombone, Tom McClung at the piano, Wayne Dockery on bass and Steven McCraven on drums. Frank Lacy was part of Roy Hargrove's Crisol Band who visited Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, ten years ago ( November 1997).

There are more great names: What to think about our own Eric Vloeimans with his Gatecrash Quartet, that will bring electronic jazz, or Maceo Parker, the King of Funk, who will close the festival on Monday or the popular E.S.T., the Esbjörn Svensson Trio that will perform on Sunday evening. These musicians, from the far North, are one of the most renewing groups in jazz nowadays and worth to plan a visit. You can find more info at their website.

NOBLE SISSLE BAND:
A few weeks ago I introduced you to a PATHE short by the Noble Sissle Band from ca. 1930. I asked for the personel and thanks to Mark Cantor, one of worlds most skilled jazz film archivist I received his point of view on the band members:

Over een paar weken, van 9 tot en met 12 mei 2008, zal Middelburg helemaal in het teken staan van haar Tweede Internationale Jazz Festival Middelburg.
Er is eigenlijk altijd al een jazzfestival in Middelburg geweest, waarin voornamelijk bands optraden in de meer traditionele jazz stijlen, maar het aantal bezoekers liep terug en er was behoefte aan andere geluiden. Bovendien gaven de bands, die overdag door de stad trokken, de argeloze bezoekers een wel erg eenzijdig beeld van dat wat de jazz te bieden heeft. De organisatie heeft dan ook drastische het roer omgegooid en wil de jazzliefhebbers uit zuidwest Nederland laten zien dat er meer onder de zon is dan alleen maar traditionele jazz. Ook de modernisten, de mensen, die meer houden van de modernere jazzstijlen, krijgen nu de kans musici te horen spelen, die anders niet zo snel naar Middelburg zouden komen. Beide soorten liefhebbers komen in het pinksterweekend ruimschoots aan hun trekken. Vandaag een vooruitblik voor de moderne jazz aanhangers - morgen kijken we vooruit met de liefhebbers van de klassieke jazzstijlen. Voor de liefhebbers van de meer moderne stromingen is er van alles te beleven; een keuze uit de keur van artiesten die optreden op het abdijplein en de straten en cafés daar omheen:

Op zaterdagavond, 10 mei 2008 zijn er op het abdijplein twee concerten. Het eerste is met Bobby Previte's New Bumb, een spraakmakende groep rondom de New Yorkse drummer en bandleider Bobby Previte. Hij is in Europa met zijn kwartet voor een korte, tiendaagse tour, waarvan Middelburg één van zijn laatste haltes is. De leden van de New Bumb zijn Ellery Eskelin op tenorsax, Bill Ware op vibrafoon, Brad Jones op bas en Bobby Previte op slagwerk. De legendarisch saxofonist Archie Shepp zal als tweede aantreden die avond op het sfeervolle abdijplein. Deze man is echt een legende in de jazz: hij was één van de eersten die free-jazz ging spelen, maar was in zijn saxofoonspel geinspireerd door niemand minder dan Coleman Hawkins. Hij was, behalve een energieke saxofonist, ook een fanatieke Malcolm X. aanhanger, die streedt voor de rechten van de zwarte Amerikaan. In Middelburg treedt hij aan met zijn kwintet, met daarin hemzelf op tenorsax, Frank Lacy op trombone, Tom McClung aan de piano, Wayne Dockery op bas en Steven McCraven op slagwerk. Frank Lacy speelde ruim tien jaar geleden ook mee in Roy Hargrove's Crisol Band, toen die in november 1997 Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen bezocht.

Er spelen nog meer grote namen in Middelburg. Wat te denken van onze eigen Eric Vloeimans met zijn Gatecrash Quartet, dat zich vooral concentreert op de electronische jazz, of Maceo Parker, weer zo'n legende, The King of Funk, die het festival maandagmiddag zal afsluiten. Ook het momenteel populaire trio E.S.T., het Esbjörn Svensson Trio zal zondagavond optreden. Deze musici uit het hoge noorden brengen vooral een vernieuwende vorm van hedendaagse jazz; de moeite waard om te gaan beluisteren. Een paar weken geleden liet ik een stukje zien van een korte Pathe film uit 1930 met daarop de Noble Sissle Band. Ik was benieuwd naar de bezetting en dankzij Mark Cantor, die doorgaat voor één van 's werelds grootste jazzfilm archivisten, kunnen we nu zijn gezichtspunten op de film laten lezen.
