Monty Alexander

On the cover of the LP a very young Monty Alexander, 33 years old. He performed in Laren with his famous trio featuring John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton at the drums. This famous trio performed in June 1976 in Montreux and this concert became one of the most remarkable concerts in Monty's career and maybe in jazz history too. It is great to hear Monty play the tunes in a way only he can do; for me his improvisations have achieved a very high level. I like Monty's improvisation on the last track The Candy Man. John Clayton plays a great bass solo in Bye Bye Blackbird. Isn't it cute that I heard his son playing the piano last Thursday in a concert of the Roy Hargrove Quintet at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen?
Regular visitors of my blog know that Monty Alexander and his two accompanists are booming stars in my personal list of favorites, since the concert in Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen fall 2006. That concert, part of a reunion tour due to the remembrance of their concert in Montreux, thirty years earlier, was for me the highlight of the year. Op de hoes van de LP een nog jonge Monty Alexander, 33 jaar oud. Hij trad op in Laren met zijn beroemde trio, waarin John Clayton op bas en Jeff Hamilton achter het drumstel te vinden zijn. Dit beroemde trio maakte in juni 1976 furore in Montreux en dit concert werd één van de opmerkelijkste concerten van Monty Alexander en misschien wel uit de jazzgeschiedenis. Het is fantastisch om te beluisteren hoe Monty improviseert op het thema op een manier zoals alleen Monty dat kan; zijn improvisaties staan voor mij op een heel hoog niveau, zoals bijvoorbeeld in het nummer The Candy Man. John Clayton laat een schitterende solo horen op Bye Bye Blackbird. Is het niet curieus dat afgelopen donderdag zijn zoon piano speelde in het Roy Hargrove Quintet tijdens een concert in de Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen?

The reunion of the Doctor Jazz Magazine was held in Wageningen (in the middle of the Netherlands) on Saturday the 21st of April. It was the 85th edition and as I visit this meeting since 1973 ( it was held in Boskoop in those days) I must havebeen there for more then 60 times. As always there were a lot of fellow record collectors and a lot of nice stuff to find. It was remarkable to learn how much LPs were available for low prices; I bought myself a bunch of it, of course.
One of the little treasures I found was an 1977 LP of the Monty Alexander Trio, titled Live In Holland. It is a registration of a radio concert for TROS-radio called Sesjun. Sesjun was a program, produced by Dick De Winter and announced by Cees Schrama, that broadcasted a weekly concert live from De Boerenhofstede or the Nick Vollebregts Jazzcafé in Laren or in another venue somewhere in the country. I remember I visited some Sesjun broadcasts live from the Harbour Jazz Club in Rotterdam during the 1970s.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )De reunie voor lezers van het blad Doctor Jazz Magazine werd gisteren, zaterdag 21 april 2007, gehouden in Wageningen. Het was al weer voor de 85ste keer en voorzover ik kan nagaan moet voor mij het aantal bezochte reunies al boven de zestig keer liggen; rond 1973 ging ik voor de eerste keer naar Boskoop, waar de eerste reunies plaats vonden. Zoals altijd waren er weer veel oude bekenden, platenverzamelaars en een heleboel mooie dingen te koop. Opvallend was dat er zoveel LPs te vinden waren voor lage prijzen; uiteraard kon ik daar een aantal leuke dingen uit halen en mee naar huis nemen. Eén van die platen die ik vond heb ik meteen 's avonds gedraaid; een LP uit 1977 van het Monty Alexander Trio, getiteld Live In Holland. Het is een registratie van een radiouitzending van het programma Sesjun, zoals dat werd uitgezonden door de TROS. De TROS zond toen wekelijks ( op donderdagavond geloof ik me te herinneren) een live concert uit. Die uitzendigen kwamen vanuit De Berenhofstede of vanuit Nick Vollebregts Jazzcafé in Laren of ook wel vanaf andere podia. Ik herinner me in de jaren zeventig een aantal van die uitzendingen meegemaakt te hebben in de Harbour Jazz Club in Rotterdam.
