Recently a special solo album by Dutch jazz piano player Michiel Borstlap was released, entitled Blue - Songs from Father to Daughter. ( GPM 20111506).

Music is, from an academic point of view, in fact nothing more then vibrations of the air ............. as simple as that! But if you enjoy listening to music, you will understand that it is more then that ...... Music is an emotion, an experience, that has to hit you. I had to think about that, when I played Michiel Borstlap latest cd Blue. He recorded this album in the summer of 2011, dedicated to his newborn child Blue Aegea, who was born in June 2011 on the day that Erroll Garner should have celebrated his 90th birthday, if he still had been around, Michiel Borstlap is fascinated by the music of this great piano player, Erroll Garner, who inspired him to compose the tune Oya's Blues. This tune can be found on the album as the 10th track, played by Michiel on the fender rhodes in stead of the piano.
The album contains almost a dozen tracks, all related to this new phase in the lives of Michiel and Ceylan, Michiel's wife - parenthood! Michiel labelled these tracks as Songs from father to Daughter. All these moments are never to forget, Michiel tells on the cover: That's why I choose this period to work on my new compositions. They are capturing exactly the way I felt. Searching for a sublime feeling, rather than a display of technical skills.

Enjoy the tune Blue, which was created during the sound check before a concert at the Blue Hall (what's in a name) of the Meervaart in Amsterdam - a great tune, which can be a model for the other tracks on this album.
I played this album several times last week and each time I enjoy its brittle inherent sounds ........ like in Lullaby or the opening track Summer Child. For me, this solo album Blue is a great homage to parenthood - an album that learns that Michiel Borstlap belongs to that select group of jazz piano players who know what's what.

Onlangs werd een bijzondere solo album van jazzpianist Michiel Borstlap uitgebracht, getiteld Blue - Songs from Father to Daughter. ( GPM 20111506).

Muziek is, vanuit natuurwetenschappelijk perspectief bekeken, niets meer of minder dan trillende lucht ........... Zo simpel is het, volgens de wetenschapper, maar iedereen die graag naar muziek luistert weet dat het meer is dan dat ............. Muziek hoort een beleving, een emotie te zijn - het hoort iets met je te doen. Muziek hoort een stuk emotie van de componist of muzikant over te brengen op de luisteraar - Muziek is dus eigenlijk gewoon communicatie, bewust of onbewust .........

Ik moest aan bovenstaande denken, toen ik de nieuwste cd van Michiel Borstlap in de cd-speler stopte. Voor dit album, dat hij in de zomer van 2011 opnam, schreef hij de muziek naar aanleiding van de geboorte van zijn dochter Blue Aegea, die in juni 2011 geboren werd, op dezelfde dag dat Erroll Garner, negentig jaar zou zijn geworden, als hij nog onder ons geweest zou zijn, ......de pianist, die Michiel zo bewondert; Erroll Garner inspireerde Michiel tot het componeren van het nummer Oya's Blues, waarvoor hij eenmalig op de cd de vleugel omruilt voor de fender rhodes. Op de cd vind je een tiental tracks, die alle geschreven zijn tijdens een levensfase, die voor jonge ouders intensief beleefd wordt - de periode waarin een gezin gevormd worden. In deze periode, met echtgenote Ceylan en dochter Blue in de nabijheid, ontstond de inspiratie voor de composities op dit album. All these moments are never to forget (= Al die momenten zijn om nooit meer te vergeten), schrijft Michiel op de hoes: That's why I choose this period to work on my new compositions.(= Vandaar ook dat ik tijdens deze periode mijn nieuwe composities gemaakt heb). They are capturing exactly the way I felt.(= Ze geven de emoties die ik voelde, precies weer). Searching for a sublime feeling, rather than a display of technical skills. (= Het accent ligt dan ook op die gevoelens en veel minder op technische hoogstandjes).

Geniet van het nummer Blue, dat Michiel componeerde tijdens de soundcheck voor een optreden in de Blue Hall in de Meervaart in Amsterdam - een mooi nummer, dat als voorbeeld kan dienen voor wat je van dit album mag verwachten!

Deze cd heeft hier al heel wat keren geklonken en elke keer geniet ik weer van de soms breekbare intrinsieke klanken, zoals in Lullaby en het openingsnummer Summer Child. Voor mij is deze solo cd Blue een mooi eerbetoon aan het jonge leven - een heerlijk album om vele malen van te genieten ..........

Onlangs werd een bijzondere plaat uitgebracht door Michiel Borstlap, getitled Blue - Songs from Father to Daughter. De geboorte van zijn dochter was voor hem aanleiding om een soloplaat te maken als een eerbetoon aan zijn dit jaar geboren dochter Blue Aegea. Het is een bijzondere plaat geworden, op een manier, die Michiel terecht een plek geeft tussen grote hedendaagse pianisten als Brad Mehldau, Jackie Terrasson of Fred Hersch.
