Randal Corsen Latin Bop Septet
Exciting rhythms, Latin music and boppish themes: These words are characteristic for the Randal Corsen's Latin Bop Septet. The seven musicians, from the Carribean and the Netherlands, were gathered on Saturday night 10th of February 2007 for a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of the Netherlands)
Randal Corsen, for the second time this season in Porgy en Bess, had found some skilled musicians to play this night ( They had some spare time tonight: Randal explained ).
The rhythm section was for the most part a latin party - Eric Calmes on the electric bass guitar, Hans Van Oosterhout at the drums and Geraldo Rosales, born Venezuelan, on the percussion. In the frontline some skilled Dutch jazz players: Ruud Breuls, trumpet player in the Dutch Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Jasper Blom on tenor saxophone and Tineke Postma, who has her own band, on the alto and soprano sax.
The repertoire was based on two musical styles: the bebop and the latin music; the style made famous by musican like Dizzy Gillespie, Machito and Arturo Sandoval, but also tunes like Parker's My Little Suede Shoes and Powell's Un Poco Loco were on the play list.
Especially the first set was caracterized by exciting rhythms, two percussionists at full-speed in up-tempo tunes and requiered a lot from the audience; the second set had more variations, like a great ballad played by Randal Corsen.
Both Tineke Postma as Jasper Blom, who played a great Latinized version of Coltrane's Giant Steps impressed in their lenghtly solos and Ruud Breuls showed why he is one of the leading soloists on trumpet in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Last but not least, Gerardo Rosales, interlarded with his conga's the concert with some Carribean flavor and Hans Van Oosterhuis even ruined the skin of his snare drum - Ella and Eddy could have saved time and money on their trip to Curacao to find some Carribean atmosphere.

Opzwepende ritmen, Latijns-Amerikaanse klanken en bop thema's: Deze woorden karakteriseren het Randal Corsen's Latin Bop Septet. Deze zeven musici, uit het Caraibisch gebied en Nederland waren op zaterdagavond 10 februari 2007 samengekomen voor een concert in de Porgy en Bess Jazzclub in Terneuzen. Randal Corsen, voor de tweede keer dit seizoen in Terneuzen, had een groep muzikanten uit beide culturen bereid gevonden om samen te spelen ( Ze hadden toch niks te doen vanavond: volgens Randal).
De ritmesectie was vooral een Latijns-Amerikaanse feestje: Eric Calmes op de elcectrische basgitaar, Hans van Oosterhout (gewoon uit Breda) op de drums en Geraldo Rosales, Venezolaan van geboorte, op het slagwerk.
De frontlinie bevat voornamelijk ervaren Nederlandse jazzmusici: Ruud Breuls, trompettist van het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Jasper Blom op tenor saxofoon en Tineke Postma, die zelf ook een eigen groep heeft, op alt en sopraan sax.
Het repertoire was gekozen uit beide culturen: de bebop en de Latijns-Amerikaanse, zeg maar de stijl bekend geworden door Dizzy Gillespie, Machito en Arturo Sandoval. Er was ook plaats voor nummers als Parker's My Little Suede Shoes en Powell's Un Poco Loco.
Vooral in de eerste zet vroegen de musici veel van het publiek: opzwepende ritmen, twee slagwerkers op volle snelheid en alleen maar up-tempo nummers. In de tweede set was dat anders; snelle nummers wisselden af met langzamere nummers, zodat het publiek op adem kon komen. Vooral een prachtige ballad, gespeeld door Randal Corsen, viel goed in de smaak. Zowel Tineke Postma als Jasper Blom, die een mooie versie van Coltrane's Giant Steps bracht, overgoten met een tropisch sausje, maakten indruk met hun lange solo's en Ruud Breuls liet horen waarom hij één van de belangrijkste trompettisten van het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw is. Last but not least, Gerardo Rosales, overgoot het geheel met zijn conga's met een Caraibisch sausje en Hans van Oosterhout zag kans het vel van zijn snaredrum aan diggelen te slaan - doe dat maar 'ns na - Kortom: Ella en Eddy hadden echt niet naar Curacao hoeven af te reizen.

Hallo Hans hier Willemstad!
Ons voorgevoel was juist. In Porgy & Bess de warme klanken van Randal Corsen en zijn muzikale vrienden en wij hier de Antilliaanse zon. Allebei niet verkeerd. In ieder geval de thuisblijvers hadden het niet bij het rechte eind.
