Gil Mellé

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Today I love to present one of the treasure from my collection in my daily Keep Swinging Web Log, a musician, now almost forgotten, only remembered by a few connoisseurs, Gil Mellé, saxophone player. Born on the last day of 1931 in Jersey City, New Jersey (USA), he became known as a painter in the primitive modern style. When he was 16 years old he also played the saxophones (tenor and barithone) at clubs in New York. It is known that he was fascinated by the music of Thelonious Monk and he had a huge collection of Duke Ellington records. During one of his gigs he ws spotted by Alfred Lion, who invited him to make a Blue Note recording, that was released as Blue Note BEP 203. This first ten-inch LP contained musicians like Eddie Bert on tenor saxophone and Tal Farlow on guitar. Gil Mellé made four ten-inch LPs for Blue Note, and they are all reissued at The Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions, a 2CD set. The third and fourth Blue Note release shows Gil Mellé on baritone saxophone, in a way I like most.
Gil Mellé, who was also a graphic artist, designed several covers for Blue Note. Mind that in the early 1950s 78 rpm records normally had no real printed cover, so this was, with the birth of the 10-inch LPs, a new phenomenon. Blue Note was the first record company to start with these new designed covers, but also advertisements in Down Beats and flyers for the man on the street. Gil Mellé became, together with John Hermansader and Paul Bacon the first cover designers for Blue Note. Most of you know that Frank Wolff was a passioned photographer and his pictures were often used for these covers. I searched into the book The Cover Art Of Blue Note Records - The Collection compiled by Graham Marsh and Glyn Callingham, but only found examples of covers designed by Reid Miles, who became, late 1950s, Blue Note's leading designer. Maybe Gil Mellé designed his own cover, like the one below. Can someone help me? Gil Mellé also introduced the great sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder to Blue Note. Rudy is still the most important sound engineer for Blue Note, and his transfers for reissues are famous ( Rudy Van Gelder Remastered. Rudy Van Gelder Edition - Connoisseur cd series )

Gil Mellé made some more albums for Prestige during the 1960s, who seem to be as good as these Blue Notes. During the second half of the 1960s he moved to California and started to make film music. He made, for example, the music for the well known TV-series Colombo, featured by Peter Falk.

He also founded his Jazz Electronauts, who played modern electronic music. It is that kind of music that is used to illustrate some of his art work ( not the covers i'm afraid, ..... just his paintings). The music behind this compilation is not to be compared with his early Blue Notes.

Gil Mellé passed away three years ago and was a great (baritone) saxophone player, one of those lost heroes, that deserve further recognition.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
Wie kan me helpen?
