I played the music of this record of the old veteran violin player Joe Venuti and enjoyed it very much. It is one of those records that has been overlooked for a very long time and I'm glad I am able to play it.
Zoot Sims, who is also labeled on this second record, is only present on four tracks. The quintet plays My Honey's Lovin' Arms - Deep Night - Remember and I Got Rhythm. Dick Hyman plays the piano and Bucky Pizzarelli the guitar. Cliff Leman is at the drums. No bass player, although he must have been in the house, as Joe plays on some trio settings with Milt Hinton and Cliff Leman too ( Tea for Three and I'll Never Be The Same ). Really nice are some duo performances with Bucky Pizzarelli and Joe Venuti, as a kind of reconstruction of the famous Joe Venuti - Eddie Lang duos of the 1930s. ( Blue Too - Oh Lady Be Good and String The Blues ).
For me the Quartet recordings with Joe Venuti on violin, Spencer Clark on bass-sax, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar and Dill Jones on drums belong to the highlights of this album. Spencer Clark, the near mystical master on the bass saxophone, follower of Adrian Rollini, and sometimes his substitute in the 1920s California Ramblers, completes these quartet tracks with Dinah - Diga Diga Do and The Blue Room. If he's still alive, he must be 99 now.
Joe Venuti, 71 one years old on this recording, died in 1978. The typical way playing the violin while unfasten the hairs of his bow, then wrap them round the top of his fiddle, with the bow underneath. enabled him to play all four strings simultaneously, allowing lush four part harmonies. This kind of chords are on this album too. The sound reminds me of the music of Roland Kirk or George Braith, two disciples in more modern jazz styles.

De muziek van deze schitterende plaat met de good-old veteraan Joe Venuti op de viool, heb ik weer eens opgezet en er van genoten.
Zoot Sims, die ook op deze tweede plaat speelt, is alleen te horen in vier nummers. Het quintet waarin hij met Joe Venuti speelt is te horen in My Honey's Lovin' Arms - Deep Night - Remember en I Got Rhythm. Dick Hyman speelt de piano en Bucky Pizzarelli de gitaar. Cliff Leman is de drummer in dit basloze quintet. Een bewuste keus denk ik, want Milt Hinton liep ook rond en is te horen met Venuti en Leman in een trio. ( Tea for Three en I'll Never Be The Same ). De drie duo-opnamen van Venuti en Pizzarelli zijn heerlijk om naar te luisteren - ze doen uiteraard terugdenken aan de beroemde Joe Venuti - Eddie Lang opnamen uit de dertiger jaren. ( Blue Too - Oh Lady Be Good en String The Blues ).
Voor mij vormen de quartetopnamen met Joe Venuti op viool, Spencer Clark op bassax, Bucky Pizzarelli op de gitaar en Dill Jones op drums tot de hoogtepunten op dit album. Ik doel vooral op het spel van Spencer Clark, de bijna mystieke meester op de bassaxofoon, die dit bijzondere instrument ging bespelen toen hij Adrian Rollini had gehoord, en af en toe zelfs Rollini verving in de California Ramblers; hij is te horen op drie titels: Dinah - Diga Diga Do en The Blue Room. Als hij nog leeft dan moet hij tegen de 100 lopen.
Joe Venuti, 71 oud tijdens deze opnamen, stierf een paar jaar later in 1978. De typische manier van spelen, waarbij hij de strijkstok omdraaide en de snaren om de hals van de viool vastmaakte, is een beetje zijn handelsmerk geworden. Hierdoor kon hij alle vier snaren tegelijk bespelen en bijzondere harmoniën maken. Die akkoorden, die me doen denken aan de modernere jazzmuziek van Roland Kirk of George Braith, zijn ook te horen op deze plaat.

The LP was made in a series of three all featuring Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims and were recorded between 1973 and 1975. The three albums are titled Joe and Zoot, The Joe Venuti Blue Four and Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims, all on the Chiaroscuro label.

Four month later Joe Venuti made an LP with the Italian guitar player Lino Patruno, who loves to reconstruct the Eddie Lang - Joe Venuti repertoire with his band. I found a fragment of him playing with Joe Venuti from that period. Enjoy it.

Deze Lp ( ik heb de LP helaas niet zelf) is er één uit een serie van drie, waarin Joe Venuti en Zoot Sims in allerlei bezettingen samen spelen. De LPs werden opgenomen tussen 1973 en 1975 en getiteld: Joe and Zoot, The Joe Venuti Blue Four en Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims; alle op het Chiaroscuro label.

Vier maanden later maakte Joe Venuti een plaat met de Italiaanse gitarist Lino Patruno, die het repertoire van Eddie Lang - Joe Venuti doet herleven met zijn band. Ik vond een filmfragment uit 1975 waarop Lino en Joe samen spelen.

Thanks, Hans, for this contribution on Joe Venuti. The Blue Four album contains great recordings, it has undesevedly been overlooked/forgotten and was never re-issued on a cd, I believe. Thanks also for sharing the video-fragment showing Joe doing things ...
