Stefon Harris

Duke Ellington is the uncrowned king of suites. Although a typically element from the classical music, Paul Whiteman and Duke Ellington made it to an art in jazz. Duke Ellington made a lot of suites, like Black Brown & Beige, the Liberian Suite, Far Eastern Suite and the New Orleans Suite. The most well known suites by Duke Ellington are recorded between the 1930s up to the 1950s. Thanks to a young vibes player Stefon Harris, some of these, most contemporary neglected suites composed by Duke Ellington, have been recorded. The record is called: Stefon Harris - African Tarantella - Dances with Duke. On this 2006 Blue Note album Stefon Harris selected parts of the New Orleans Suite ( originally from 1970 ) and the Queens Suite ( from 1958 ); both by Duke. A third selection is from his own suite, titled The Gardner Meditations. One of the parts is titled African Tarantella, which is the name of the album.
Stefon Harris is one of those young booming talents. He was born in March 1973 and studied at the Manhattan School of Music. He was influenced by the legendary vibes player Milt Jackson. During his short carreer up to now, he won several awards, like the Dutch Bird Award for Artist Deserving Wider Recognition, a kind of incentive price for young talents, at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague in 2002. You can find Stefon Harris' name on all major lists as best mallet player in all kinds of polls. I liked this album, with the great harmonical structures, like Duke Ellington loved to make, played by a great orchestra with names like Steve Turre, the trombone player and Xavier Davis, the pianist, who plays a great solo in African Tarantella, the second part of Harris' suite The Gardner Meditations. Also Greg Tardy on clarinet makes some great music in Thanks for The Beautiful Land on the Delta ( first part of the New Orleans Suite). A great piece of music is The Single Petal of Rose, featuring Stefon Harris on vibes and marimba and Derrick Hodge on bass.
I love to share two fragments. The tune San Francisco Holiday, composed by Thelonious Monk by the SFJazz Collective, featuring Stefon Harris ( July 2007) and preceded by a master class at the Maple Street Magnet School for Arts. It's great to see this young musician ( 34 years old) working with these young kids.

Duke Ellington kun je wel de ongekroonde koning van de suite noemen. Hoewel de suite een typische muziekvorm is uit de klassieke muziek, maakten musici als Paul Whiteman en Duke Ellington er een echte jazzvorm van. De Duke maakte een heleboel suites, waarvan de bekendste zijn: Black Brown & Beige, the Liberian Suite, Far Eastern Suite en de New Orleans Suite. Duke Ellington maakte zijn bekendste tussen 1930 en 1960 maar dankzij vibrafonist Stefon Harris, zijn nu ook een paar minder bekende, jongere op de plaat gezet. Dat album heet Stefon Harris - African Tarantella - Dances with Duke. Op deze Blue Note plaat uit 2006 heeft Stefon Harris verschilende delen van de New Orleans Suite ( het origineel dateert uit 1970 ) uitgevoerd en de Queens Suite ( uit 1958 ). Een derde suite is een eigen compositie: The Gardner Meditations. Eén van de delen, African Tarantella, heeft de plaat zijn naam gegeven,zodat de spin op de hoes meteen verklaard is.
