Jimmy Hamilton

Jeff Hamilton is a well known clarinet player who worked for 25 years in the Duke Ellington band ( 1943 - 1968 ). He was born in 1917 and passed away at the Virgin Isles September 1994 where he lived since he left Ellington. Before he joined the Duke Ellington orchestra he played with Teddy Wilson and Lucky Millinder for some years. In 1943 he received a message from Ellington, who needed a clarinet player to replace Barney Bigard. His clarinet playing was superb and in the Duke Ellington Orchestra he got a lot of chances to develop his technique, especially in the numerous suites Ellington wrote.
I found an Lp with a Jimmy Hamilton picture on the cover, simply titled Jimmy Hamilton and his Orchestra. It is a release of the Jazz Kings label, a cheap LP series of the American Themes & Tapes Inc. New York. The original release was on the Urania label (UJLP-1003) label released late 1950s. During that period Jimmy Hamilton was still active in the Duke Ellington orchestra and this LP was one of his first albums under his own direction.
The eight tracks on the LP were recorded at two sessions: October 1954 and late 1954. The liner notes read 1956, but that is wrong. The October 1954 recording session has some well known names, like Lucky Thompson on tenor saxophone and Oscar Pettiford on bass. The late 1954 sessions has Jimmy Woode, then 28 years old, on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums.
I'm glad I have seen Jimmy Woode, 79 years old, playing in the Roberta Gambarini Quartet that gave a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen (southwest part of the Netherlands) November 2003. Jimmy Woode passed away in April 2005. Within a month Roberta will return at Porgy en Bess Jazz Club with her quartet and as soon as I know what date this concert is sceduled I let you know.

Jeff Hamilton is vooral bekend geworden als klarinetspeler in de band van Duke Ellington, waarin hij 25 jaar vertoefde ( 1943 - 1968 ). Hij was geboren in 1917 en stierf in september 1994 op de Maagdeneilanden, waar hij woonde sinds hij Ellington verlaten had. Voordat hij bij Ellington speelde was hij al een paar jaar bij Teddy Wilson en Lucky Millinder te vinden geweest. In 1943 ontving hij een verzoek van Duke Ellington om bij hem klarinet te komen spelen in de plaats van Barney Bigard. Het klarinetspel van Jimmy Hamilton paste uitstekend in het orkest en dat is vooral in de suites goed te horen.
Enige tijd geleden vond ik een LP met een foto van Jimmy Hamilton op de hoes, alleen maar getiteld Jimmy Hamilton and his Orchestra. Het is een uitgave op het Jazz Kings label, een goedkope uitgave uitgebracht door the American Themes & Tapes Inc. New York. De originele uitgave was op een Urania LP ( UJLP-1003 ) ergens halverwege de jaren vijftig. Tijdens de opnamen voor deze plaat was Jimmy Hamilton nog steeds volop actief in het grote orkest van Ellington. Deze plaat is één van de eerste onder eigen naam. ( Er schijnt nog een vroegere opname te zijn met het Emmit Slay Trio ( rond januari 1953), die grotendeels onuitgegeven bleef).
De acht nummers op deze plaat werden opgenomen tijdens twee sessies: oktober 1954 en eind 1954. In de oktober 1954 opnamesessie vinden we bekende namen, zoals Lucky Thompson op tenorsax en Oscar Pettiford op bas. Op de tweede sessie vinden we een 28-jarige Jimmy Woode op bas en Sam Woodyard op slagwerk.
Ik prijs me gelukkig om diezelfde Jimmy Woode, toen 79 jaar, als deel van het Roberta Gambarini Quartet te hebben zien spelen tijdens een optreden in de Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in november 2003. Jimmy Woode overleed in april 2005. Over een maand komt diezelfde Roberta Gambarini weer zingen in de Porgy and Bess Jazz Club, maar de exacte datum is nog niet bekend. Zodra ik het weet zal ik het melden.

I found a film fragment made during one of the concerts the Duke Ellington Orchestra gave at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on the 2nd of November 1958. There were two short concerts ( 19.30 - 21.45 hrs) that evening. You can hear Jimmy Hamilton playing the clarinet and Quentin Jackson on trombone. The quality of the film is mediocre; Sorry 'bout that !!

Je ziet en hoort ( de kwaliteit is niet bijzonder goed) Jimmy Hamilton op klarinet en Quentin Jackson op trombone.
