American Yodeling
Today my blog is labeled American Yodeling, refering to a CD released by Trikont I have in my collection, that needs recording dates. Last weekend I was pointed to a rare film fragment from Johnny Cash and Louis Armstrong, part of the Johnny Cash TV Show. In this popular Johnny Cash TV Show, probably recorded in Nashville somewhere in October 1970 Johnny Cash meets an old and fragile Louis Armstrong. Johnny refers to a July 1930 recording Louis made with Jimmie Rodgers, the so-called Blue Yodeler, titled Blue Yodel No. 9. Johnny says, he loves to re-create this unique session and plays with Louis Let's give it to 'em in black and white as Louis suggests. They play, accordingly to Hans Westerberg, St. Louis Blues. Enjoy the fragment.
This historical fragment,of course, is important as it shows one of the last public performances of Louis Armstrong who died 6 July 1971. It was recorded as part of the Johnny Cash show no. 38 on the 10th of October 1970 ( accordingly to Hans Westerberg's 1981 Louis Armstrong Discography "Boy From New Orleans") and not the 28th of October as the film info says, as Louis played on the 29th of October in London at a Charity Concert. Of course it is well possible that the date of the 28th of October was the date the program was broadcasted. Food for historians !!
The record Johnny Cash refers to in the film was:
JIMMY RODGERS: Jimmy Rodgers g -vo, Louis Armstrong tp, Lil Hardin or * p.
Recorded in Los Angeles 16th of July 1930
BLUE YODEL NO. 9 (STANDIN" ON THE CORNER) - 54867-2
Released originally as Victor 23580
* It was unknown for a long time who might be the piano player. Hans Westerberg suggests that it can't be Lil Hardin (Lil Hardin married Louis Armstrong in 1924 and divorced him in 1931. She named herself during that period Lil Armstrong ), and that it could have been Earl Hines. Other suggestions mentioned are Harvey Brooks and L.Z. Cooper. The liner notes of the Retrieval CD Blue Yodelers ( RTR 79020) says that Jimmie Rodgers' own lyric sheet has been found that reads, written in Jimmy Rodgers' own handwriting: Recorded in Hollywood ( sic ) 7-16-30. Louis Armstrong, trumpet Lillian on piano.
1. Yodeling Mountaineer Mainer, J.E.'s Mountaineers 2:50
17. My Swiss Moonlight Lullaby Carter, Wilf (Montana Slim) 3:08
18. Mule Skinner Blues Monroe, Bill & His Bluegrass Boys 2:43
26. Sleep, Baby, Sleep Watson, George P
For me it is very imporant to have at least the tune title, the band name and, very important, the recording dates.
Can someone help me to find that information? That would be great !! Thanks Phil for your info !!
It seems tat Columbia will release two DVDs containing 58 Johnny Cash shows from the late 1960s - early 1970s, which will contain this fragment too.

JIMMY RODGERS: Jimmy Rodhers g -vo, Louis Armstrong tp, Lil Hardin or * p.
Opgenomen in Los Angeles 16 juli 1930
BLUE YODEL NO. 9 (STANDIN" ON THE CORNER) - 54867-2
Louis Armstrong, trumpet Lillian on piano. ( = Opgenomen in Hollywood 16 - 7 - 1930. Thanks to Phil O' Rourke from Australia most info could be found. You can read it in the commend below this blog. Some tracks still need info:

26. Sleep, Baby, Sleep Watson, George P
For me it is very imporant to have at least the tune title, the band name and, very important, the recording dates.
