Leo Cuypers

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Some times ago I found an LP of Leo Cuypers, titled Brull Band, in the secondhand record shop at the Dam in Middelburg ( southwest part of the Netherlands ). Leo Cuypers, born in 1947, is a free jazz piano player who became known by his compositions and performances with groups like the Willem Breuker Kollektief. In 1973, only 26 years old, he received the Wessel Ilcken price, the most prestigious price in jazz in the Netherlands. In 1977 he became known by the Zeeland Suite, a composition for a jazz septet in nine parts. This Suite was made commissioned by Nieuwe Muziek Zeeland and it should be created on nine locations all through the province of Zeeland. Although I didn't live anymore in that region in 1977 ( I left Zeeland for a stay of 18 years in Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, a small village near Rotterdam), I was proud that one of the locations for that Suite was the small harbour of Hoedekenskerke, my place of birth.
In the 1960s, being a young adult, my brother and I visited the concerts of Nieuwe Muziek in Middelburg and we heard the Willem Breuker Kollektief with Leo Cuypers at the piano; a group then still a rather unknown free jazz band, not international famous, like now, playing at the schouwburg in Middelburg. I remember that the free jazz style was rather provocative to the music the establisment liked and I guess it was our way to lay into society. For the ordinary man in the street the music of Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker and Han Bennink was a bunch of noise. When I found the LP Leo Cuypers Brull Band, I was anxious to hear that noise again after fourty years. This LP, Leo Cuypers' second one for the VARA JAZZ label, contains 5 titles, Bouncing with Babe, referring to Willem Van Manen the trombone player of the band, De Gigant, Burengerucht, De Wedstrijd and Killer Joe Suite, a 16 minutes composition in three parts of a young Jan Kuiper, the guitar player I heard at a concert in The Kloveniersdoelen in Middelburg six years (November 2001) ago with David Murray and Arthur Blythe and the Niehove Jazz Ensemble. The musicians on this LP are Leo Cuypers at the piano, Willem Van Manen trombone, Bob Driessen and Maarten van Norden reeds, Jan Kuiper guitar, Ernst Glerum and Martin van Duynhoven.
The music on this album, recorded December 1984 in O 42 in Nijmegen ( a city in the eastern regions of The Netherlands) sounds great and nowadays, in my ears, not provocative at all, learns me how music and musical taste is a relative notion. It would be great if I could jump back in time, I sometimes dream up, in a time machine if possible, and listen again to the music these men played at The Schouwburg in Middelburg, fourty years ago; maybe I can see myself again, as a young adult, sitting on the front row.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
