Nellie Lutcher
Lil Green
Slick Chicks and Tough Mamas; what a great title for a CD compilation made by Bakhåll. This CD contains the slickest and toughest of blues and jazz ladies, as they explain on their website. ( a slick chick is an attractive and well dressed woman and a tough mama is a woman impossible to surpass, the best, the greatest ). It contains music of some seldom heard women in jazz and blues, like Lil Green, Albennie Jones, Georgia White, Nellie Lutcher, Marilyn Scott, Louisa "Blue Lu" Barker, but also some more known ladies from the scene like Victoria Spivey, Memphis Minnie, Cleo Brown and Dinah Washington. Last night I played my copy I received some years ago and I was fascinated by miss Nellie Lutcher. She really upset me with the two tracks on this compilation!!
Nellie Lutcher, born in October 1915 in Lake Charles (Louisiana) passed away some months ago ( 8th of June 2007) in Los Angeles, aged 94. She learned to play piano in local bands and started as a singer with the Southern Rhythm Boys, where she developed her remarkable vocal style. It took several years before she got the recognition she deserved. In 1947 she moved to Los Angeles where Dave Dexter, a Capitol Records talent scout, discovered her at a show. She made her first record in 1947, which became a hit ( Hurry On Down and The Lady's In Love With You) and she became popular in both the jazz and Rhythm and Blues music styles. He's a Real Gone Guy was her second record (Capitol 40017) and this tune is to find on this Slick Chicks and Tough Mamas CD. What a great tune. I was stuck by the boogie woogie rhythm ( or Rock & Roll avant la lettre if you like), with a great rhythm accompaniment of Nappy Lamar at the guitar, Billy Hadnott on bass and Lee Young on drums. The tune became a hit at all R & B radio stations all through the country.
The second track on this compilation album played by Nellie Lutcher is a well known tune, Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band, but played in a way I've never heard before. It was recorded December 1947 and it swings like hell; What a great entertainer vocalist, especially when she chats in Alexander's Ragtime Band. I read somewhere that someone labeled her as the woman Fats Waller. Her singing on this CD is very morish to me and it seems that The Bear Family record company in Germany issued a box set containing her entire body of work. Maybe that's an option?

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
