Hamilton De Holanda

It is suggested that there are more similitaries then differences between choro music and jazz music. I don't know if this true, but I learned that the history of the development of both music styles have a lot in common. Yesterday I saw some fragments of films of Hamliton De Holanda, a bandolim player that feels at home in both jazz and choro music.

Born in 1975 he plays the Portuguese guitar, the so-called bandolim, made famous by musicians like Jacob Do Bandolim. He added an extra ( double) string to his instrument which makes it possible to develop a more polyphonic playing technique. The sound of this 10 string bandolim ( all strings double on this instrument) is powerful and precise. Although I never have heard an album of him I became fascinated by the way he plays his instrument due to some film fragments of performances.

Hamilton De Holanda is one of those raising stars in Brazil we should keep an eye on. He feels comfortable, not only in choro or jazz music, but also in a classical orchestra, with famous artists like the Buena Vista Social Club or with jazz musicans like Stanley Jordan. He will, I'm sure about that, develop to a global artist, and will get known beyond the borders of Brazil. He has been in Europe, most of the time in France, and I found a fragment from a TV program where he shows his extended instrument at a festival in Corsica. .
This summer he will play at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, I learned, with his Brasilianos Quintet and in October he is sceduled in The Netherlands again: in the Oosterpoort in Groningen, in the Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp (Belgium), in the Doelen in Rotterdam and the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. I love to share with you some fragments, where he tells about his instrument, with his Brasilianos Quintet and alone on stage in Brasilia ( Brazil). I hope you'll become as fascinated by this young rising star as me, that builds bridges between choro and jazz music.

Er wordt wel beweerd dat er meer overeenkomsten dan verschillen zijn tussen de choro muziek uit Brazilië en de jazz, oorspronkelijk uit Amerika. Ik weet niet of dat zo is; wel ontdekte ik dat de ontstaansgeschiedenis van beide stijlen veel overeenkomsten heeft. Gisteren vond ik een aantal filmfragmenten van Hamlton De Holanda, een Braziliaanse bandolimspeler die zich met gemak thuis voelt in zowel de choro - als jazzmuziek.
Hamilton De Holanda werd geboren in 1975 en speelt de Portugese gitaar, ook wel bandolim genaamd, beroemd gemaakt door musici als Jacob Do Bandolim. Hij plaatste een extra snaar ( in feite twee, aangezien ale snaren op dit instrument dubbelen ) op zijn instrument, zodat hij een meerstemmige manier van spelen kon ontwikkelen. Het geluid van deze 10 snarige bandolim is dan ook krachtig en nauwkeurig. Hoewel ik nooit een opname van deze jonge veelbelovende Braziliaan had gehoord, raakte ik geboeid door zijn manier van spelen door een aantal filmfragmenten waarin hij te zien en te horen is.
Hamilton De Holanda is één van snelrijzende sterren aan het muziekfirmament, die we in de gaten noeten houden, denk ik. Hij is voelt zich thuis op alle podia met allerlei soorten muziek; of het nou om een klassiek orkest gaat, of een beroemde groep als de Buena Vista Social Club of met ervaren jazzmusici die hun sporen verdiend hebben, zoals Stanley Jordan; hij draait er zijn hand niet voor om. Hij zal dan ook snel bekend worden buiten Brazilië. Hij reisde vorig jaar naar Europa en trad onder andere op in Frankrijk. Deze zomer treedt hij op met zijn Brasilianos Quintet op het Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam en in oktober is hij ook op andere podia in onze omgeving te horen, zoals De Oosterpoort in Groningen, Het Zuiderpershuis in Antwerpen, in De Doelen in Rotterdam en het Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Ik vind het leuk om een paar filmfragmenten van optredens te laten zien. Eén optreden komt uit een TV programma opgenomen tijdens een festival in Corsica ( Frankrijk) en hierin vertelt hij meer over zijn instrument. Verder optredens met zijn Brasilianos Quintet en solo op een podium in Brasilia ( Brazilie).Uiteraard hoop ik dat jullie net zo geboeid worden door deze jonge Braziliaanse bandolimspeler als ik, die een brug weet te slaan tussen choro - en jazzmuziek.
