Skopje Jazz Festival

Last night Hamilton de Holanda, the Brazilian bandolim player, finished his short tour along Dutch and Flemish venues with a concert at the Tropen Theater in Amsterdam. I had planned to join the Antwerp concert, but I felt tired and a bit sick, so I decided to take some rest. I learned that Hamilton de Holanda would join the Skopje Jazz Festival next week. One of the regular visitors of my daily Keep Swinging web log is Marjan A. from Macedonia and he pointed me to this Skopje Jazz Festival.

The Skopje Jazz Festival is sceduled from the 18th of October up to the 22nd at different locations in the city. Skopje is the capital of Macedonia, one of the states on the Balkans, bordered to Serbian in the north, Albania in the west, Greece in the south and Bulgaria in the east. The program of the festival shows great promises. For me, I should try to join the Jean-Michel Pilc concert on the 20th of October. I heard his trio in a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen ( the southwest part of The Netherlands) February 2002. He's a piano player that puts all his energy into his performings.
During that same concert at the Universal Hall The Leaders will perform, an all-star band with great names like Chico Freeman tenor & soprano saxophone - Bobby Watson alto saxophone - Eddie Henderson trumpet, flugelhorn - Fred Harris piano - Buster Williams bass and Lenny White drums. I heard Eddie Henderson in 2006 at the Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam in the Benny Golson All Stars. A great trumpet player. On the 21st of October you should join our national Dutch pride The ICP Orchestra. ICP stands for Instant Composers Pool and when I was a teenager I heard these men playing in Middelburg ( in the southwest part of The Netherlands). Some members from 40 years ago are still active in the band: Misha Mengelberg, who is an excelent modern jazz pianist and Han Bennink, who can even make rhythms without his drums. This band will play in a double concert with Butch Morris' Nublu Orchestra. On the last day I'd try to get tickets for Alexander Von Schlippenbach in the Dom ARCH, who is a skilled piano player in the Thelonious Monk tradition. I've never seen him in concert, but I heard his great recordings, like his Enja recording Schlippenbach Plays Monk.

It feels uncomfortable that I can't find the Hamilton de Holanda Quintet scedulded for the 20th and 21st of October; maybe their performances have been canceled. If you visit this festival there will be enough time to enjoy Macedonia and Skopje, as it seems to be a beautiful country.

Gisteren kwam er een eind aan een korte tournee van Hamilton de Holanda, de Braziliaanse bandolim speler, die een serie concerten gaf op Nederlandse en Vlaamse podia; het laatste optreden was in het Tropentheater in Amsterdam. Ik was van plan om het concert in Antwerpen bij te wonen, maar ik was moe en besloot om rust te nemen. Hamilton de Holanda treedt, volgens zijn website, deze week op, op het Skopje Jazz Festival. Eén van de trouwe bezoekers van deze Keep swinging web log, Marjan A. uit Macedonië wees me op dit bijzondere festival.

Het Skopje Jazz Festival wordt gehouden van 18 tot en met 22 oktober 2007 op verschillende locaties in de stad. Skopje is de hoofdstad van Macedonië, één van de landen op de Balkan en wordt begrensd door Servië in het noorden, Albanië in het westen, Griekenland in het zuiden en Bulgarije in het oosten. Het programma van het festival laat een paar verrassingen zien. Als ik er mocht zijn, zou ik kiezen voor het concert van het Jean-Michel Pilc Trio op 20 oktober. Ik hoorde hem spelen in de Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen in februari 2002. Hij is een pianist die veel energie in zijn spel stopt. Tijdens dit dubbelconcert in de Universal Hall treden ook The Leaders op, de leiders, een all-star band met grote gevestigde namen zoals Chico Freeman op tenor- en sopraansax - Bobby Watson op altsax - Eddie Henderson op trompet en bügel - Fred Harris op piano - Buster Williams bas en Lenny White slagwerk. Ik hoorde Eddie Henderson vorig jaar spelen op het Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam bij de Benny Golson All Stars . Een groot trompettist. Op 21 oktober zou ik naar onze nationale trots, het ICP orkest gaan kijken. ICP betekent Instant Composers Pool en toen ik een puber was ging ik vaak naar hun optredens in Middelburg. Sommige leden van de groep, zoals Misha Mengelberg, een excellent pianist en Han Bennink, de man die overal ritme uit kan halen, spelen nog steeds mee. Deze band speelt in een dubbelconcert met Butch Morris' Nublu Orchestra. Op de laatste dag zou ik proberen kaartjes voor Alexander Von Schlippenbach te krijgen in het Dom ARCH. Von Schlippenbach is een groot pianist die speelt in de stijl van Thelonious Monk. Ik heb hem nooit horen spelen, maar bezit wel een schitterende CD; de Enja opname Schlippenbach Plays Monk.

Ik vind het vreemd dat ik het Hamilton de Holanda Quintet niet tegenkom in de programmering op 20 en 21 oktober; misschien is zijn optreden afgezegd of is hij er juist in toegevoegd. Hoe dan ook; als ik er zou zijn, zou er ongetwijfeld nog genoeg tijd overblijven om te genieten van deze mooie stad Skopje en dit schitterende land, Macedonië.

Bedankt Marjan A. dat je me op dit festival hebt gewezen. Als je er naar toe gaat, laat me dan maar eens horen hoe het geweest is. Misschien kunnen we een paar foto's in deze Keep swinging weblog plaatsen.

Richard Galliano Tangaria Quartet

A few months ago I got acquainted with the music of Richard Galliano at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. At a Sunday concert he played with his Tangaria Quartet. It was impressive. I told you about that concert in a previous Keep Swinging web log

Accordion seems pre-eminently an instrument for vaudeville artists and informal amusement music at wedding party in remote areas. But, nothing is further from the truth. The accordion was a very popular instrument in France, to play the musette and in Argenina in the hands of musicians like Astor Piazzolla. Also in jazz there are some great names to mention: Gus Viseur, Joe Mooney, Johnny Meyer, Emile Carrara and, my personal hero on the accordion Cornell Smelser. Richard Galliano, born in Cannes in 1950 is one of my favorites too, since last summer.

I bought myself one of his last CDs, titled Richard Galliano & Tangaria Quartet, featuring Hamilton de Holanda. Subtitled: Live in Marciac 2006. This album is a great contribution to the accordion. Most compositions are from Richard Galliano himself, others from the great maestro Astor Piazzolla. At the concert in Rotterdam it was a pity that Hamilton de Holanda couldn't be in time for this Richard Galliano Tangaria concert ( He was in time for his own concert !!)

One of the great tracks on this CD is the solo performance on the bandolim by Hamilton de Holanda: Disperada. He's is really one of the true giants on this instrument. I hope to hear him at the Anwerp concert listed below. I found some fragments with Richard Galliano, playing solo: Libertango; with his Tangaria Quartet and one fragment of Hamilton de Holanda (solo). Enjoy it.

Een paar maanden geleden hoorde ik voor het eerst de muziek van Richard Galliano op het North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Op één van de concerten op zondagavond speelde hij met zijn Tangaria Quartet. Het was een heftige en indrukwekkende kennismaking. Ik heb er eerder in één van mijn Keep Swinging weblogs over geschreven.

De accordeon associeer je meestal met amusementsmuziek; tussen de schuifdeuren of als instrument op afgelegen dorpsbruiloften. Maar niets is minder waar. De accordeon is vanouds één van de populairste instrumenten in Frankrijk om de musette op te spelen of in Argentinië in handen van muzikanten als Astor Piazzolla. Als je terugkijkt in de jazzgeschiedenis kom je namen tegen als Gus Viseur, Joe Mooney, onze eigen Johnny Meyer, Emile Carrara en, mijn persoonlijke favoriet op de accordeon, Cornell Smelser. Richard Galliano, geboren in 1950 in Cannes, hoort sinds deze zomer ook tot mijn favorieten.

Ik kocht zijn laatste CD getiteld Richard Galliano & Tangaria Quartet, featuring Hamilton de Holanda. De ondertitel: Live in Marciac 2006. Deze plaat is een schitterend eerbetoon aan de accordeon en niemand zal meer durven beweren dat jazz en accordeon niet samen gaan. De meeste composities zijn van Richard Galliano zelf, andere van de grote meester, Astor Piazzolla. Tijdens het concert in Rotterdam was het jammer dat Hamilton de Holanda niet op tijd op het podium kon staan bij het Richard Galliano Tangaria concert ( Zijn vliegtuig landde wel op tijd voor zijn eigen concert later die avond)

Eén van de indrukwekkendste nummers op deze CD is die waar Hamilton de Holanda solo speelt op zijn bandolim: Disperada. Hij is echt geweldig op zijn instrument en ik hoop hem volgende week in Antwerpen weer te horen spelen. Ik vond een aantal filmfragmenten waarin je Richard Galliano solo het nummer Libertango kunt zien spelen; samen met zijn Tangaria Quartet en één fragment waarin Hamilton de Holanda soleert. Genieten dus !!

Volgende week speelt Hamilton de Holanda met zijn quintet hier in de buurt en heel de maand oktober is hij in Europa te horen.

Mike Marshall - Hamilton de Holanda

This time I want to share with you two great mandolin players that I found in a YouTube fragment: Mike Harshall and Hamilton De Holanda. Mike Marshall is a skilled musican, master of mandolin, guitar and violin in various styles from jazz to classical to bluegrass to Latin music. He is active for many years and performed a few years ago with Hamilton de Holanda, the young bandolim player from Brazil, who combines choro and jazz music to a new personal contemporary style in music. He was one of the musicians to be heard at the North Sea Jazz Festival. I really enjoyed the concert. The fragment of the performance I want to share with you was recorded some times ago during a concert. It became a spontanious kind of fight of the mandolins that you should see - a mandolin contest between to skilled musicians. Enjoy it.

Deze keer wil ik julie een filmpje laten zien dat ik op YouTube vond met daarop twee fantastische mandoline spelers: Mike Harshall en Hamilton De Holanda. Mike Marshall is een ervaren muzikant, een meester op de mandoline, de gitaar en de viool in allerlei muziekstijlen van jazz tot klassiek en van bluegrass tot latin music. Hij timmert al jaren aan de weg en trad een tijdje geleden op met Hamilton de Holanda, de jonge bandolimspeler uit Brazilië, die choro combineert met jazz en zo een eigen moderne muziekstijl heeft ontwikkeld. Ik hoorde hem op het North Sea Jazz Festival afgelopen maand en ik heb genoten van het concert. Het fragment dat ik heb uitgezocht om te laten zien is gemaakt tijdens een concert. Het werd een spontane improvisatie op beide instrumenten; een gevecht tussen twee mandolines, dat waard is om te horen en te zien.

Hamilton de Holanda

On the 15th of July the Hamilton de Holanda Quintet Brasilianos gave a concert at the Murray tent at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. His band features Hamilton de Holanda of course on the bandolim 10 cordas, the ten string bandolim, Gabriel Grossi on harmonica, Daniel Santiago at the guitar, André Vasconcelos at the bass and Marcio Bahia on drums.
Hamilton de Holanda, who dedicated one of his tunes to his newborn son, born a few days before this concert, played the music of his album Musica das nuvens e do chao in an energetical way. He also played some pieces from his new solo CD 01 Byte 10 Cordas - Hamilton de Holanda Ao Vivo No Rio, I will discuss later.

Although the circumstances for this performance were not very good, the group gave an excellent concert. Due to a delayed flight they were too late in Rotterdam and arrived just one hour before their concert at the festival. A guest appearance for Hamilton de Holanda with the Richard Galliano Tangaria Quintet was cancelled due to that fact. It was the last concert at the Murray stage for a partial filled tent with a lot of back ground noise from an adjoining concert. What a shame !

Hamilton de Holanda, born in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, was raised in the choro tradition and became the most important bandolim player of the world nowadays. Critics in Brazil compare him with Jacob do Bandolim and that is, of course, a great compliment. His bandolim was rebuilded for him to a 10 string instrument. During the concert he showed that he is a skilled bandolim player that knows how to entertain the audience, most Brazilian immigrants, who wanted to hear their popular Brazilian instrumentalist. In Europe he is a rising star, especially popular in France. He is one of the musicians that play on the great film Brasileirinho, the documentary about choro music made by Mika Kasurismäki, a film everybody should have seen.
Hamilton de Holanda made several albums that should be obtained, although still hard to find in The Netherlands, but available on the internet. I found myself two of his last CDs in Rotterdam and I enjoyed the release of Hamilton de Holanda titled Musica das Nuvens e do Chao ( Song of the clouds and the earth) that contains twelve tracks with compositions of Brazilians composers like Baden Powell, Astor Piazzolla and Egberto Gimonti, but also an excellent played tune like Estacoes, he also performed during the concert. On this number Yamandu Costa plays as a guest on his violao 7 cordas, seven string guitar. Yamandu Costa is one of major choro instrumentalists of Brazil nowadays. It is a great CD that learns that this man and his music is a rising star. Try to find yourself a copy of this great album. The second album is a solo album, titled 01 Byte 10 Cordas - AuVivo No Rio and will be reviewed in a coming blog.



Hamilton de Holanda will be back for a tour this fall. He is to be heard in Groningen, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Find the dates at his website.

Op 15 juli 2007 trad het Hamilton de Holanda Quintet Brasilianos op in de Murray tent tijdens het Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Zijn band bestaat, behalve uit Hamilton de Holanda natuurlijk op de bandolim 10 cordas, de tiensnarige bandolim, Gabriel Grossi op mondharmonica, Daniel Santiago op de gitaar, André Vasconcelos op de bas en Marcio Bahia op het slagwerk.
Hamilton de Holanda, die één van de nummers opdroeg aan zijn pasgeboren zoon ( zijn zoon werd vlak voor zijn vertrek naar Europa geboren) speelde voornamelijk de muziek van één van zijn laatste platen Musica das nuvens e do chao. Hij speelde verder enkele solostukken uit zijn soloalbum 01 Byte 10 Cordas - Hamilton de Holanda Ao Vivo No Rio, dat ik later zal bespreken.

Hoewel de omstandigheden voor het optreden verre van optimaal waren, werd dit een schitterend optreden. Omdat hun vlucht uit Zuid Amerika vertraagd was, kwamen de muzikanten pas een uur voor de voorstelling aan op het festival. Een gepland gastoptreden van Hamilton de Holanda bij het Richard Galliano Tangaria Quintet kwam hierdoor te vervallen. Verder was het het laatste optreden in de Murray tent, die daardoor niet helemaal gevuld werd en erg gehorig bleek, zodat tijdens de rustige passages de stampende ritmen van een ander concert irriteerden. Jammer !!

Hamilton de Holanda, geboren in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, groeide op in de choro traditie en dat was tijdens het concert goed hoorbaar. Hij wordt door critici in Brazilië al vergeleken met Jacob do Bandolim en dat is uiteraard een groot compliment. Hij wordt beschouwd als de belangrijkste bandolimspeler van dit moment. Zijn bandolim is speciaal voor hem omgebouw van een acht- naar een tiensnarig instrument. Tijdens het concert liet hij zien dat hij een ervaren muzikant is, die zijn publiek, meest Braziliaanse immigranten, die speciaal op dit concert waren afgekomen, enthousiast kon maken; hij is niet voor niets één van de populairste artiesten op dit gebied van Brazilie. In Europe is hij een opkomende ster, vooral in Frankrijk speelt hij vaak. Hij is te zien en te horen in de schitterende film Brasileirinho, de documentaire over choro muziek van de Finse filmmaker Mika Kasurismäki, een film die iedere muziekliefhebber gezien moet hebben. Hamilton de Holanda heeft al heel wat platen op zijn naam staan, die echter allemaal moeilijk te vinden zijn in Nederland. Zelf kon ik tijdens het festival de hand leggen op de CD Hamilton de Holanda Musica das Nuvens e do Chao ( Liedjes over de wolken en de aarde) dat twaalf nummers bevat met composities van grote Braziliaanse componisten als Baden Powell, Astor Piazzolla en Egberto Gimonti, maar ook eigen werk zoals het schitterende nummer Estacoes, dat hij ook op het festival speelde. Hamilton de Holanda maakt dit najaar een tournee door onze streken. Hij is te beluisteren in Groningen, Antwerpen, Rotterdam en Amsterdam. Data zijn te vinden op zijn website.

North Sea Jazz

Yesterday I visited the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). This annual festival of jazz music was organized for the 32nd times from 13 up to 15 July 2007 at the Ahoy building. I visited the festival on the third and last day and want to share with you some impressions.

Face to face: Lee Konitz and Martial Solal

he first concert on my want list was a disappointment. In the series Key Figures of Europe two legends were invited on stage: Martial Solal, the 80 years old French piano player, who had played with musicians like Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Lucky Thomson during the 1950s, accompanied by the Moutin twins ( Francois on bass and Louis on drums) performed with Lee Konitz, 80 years old too. The sounds, both veterans produced, failed to hold the attention and after the second number half of the audience left the concert with Konitz yelling in despair: Don't they like Jazz?

Randy Brecker Electric Band

In my opinion the organisation was better then last years and it wasn't so crowdy, which made it possible to change concerts. So I could take a quick glance on the concerts of Stan Tracey ( another veteran, but in good form) with Benjamin Herman, Dave Holland and the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra ( without Bob Brookmeyer). I enjoyed the concert of the Dutch veteran piano player Misha Mengelberg, who had a great concert with his trio. In the Maas hall I joined the Randy Brecker Electric Band concert, but this kind of loud funky music is wasted on me.

Hamilton De Holanda with his Brasilianos Quintet

There were two great concerts I have to mention. First of all Richard Galliano with his Tangaria Quintet happened to be skilled and entertaining musicians. This French accordion player won over the audience easily and got several standing ovations. What a great musician ! The Brazilian bandolim player Hamilton De Holanda, who was scedulded to participate with Richard Galliano, couldn't be in time in Rotterdam to join this concert, but he was in time for his own concert at the Murray. This concert with his Brasillianos Quintet was great and it was a great end of my festival. I will tell more about it in a later blog.

Gisteren bezocht ik het North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Dit jaarlijkse festival werd voor de 32ste keer georganiseerd in Ahoy van 13 tot en met 15 juli 2007. Ik ben alleen op de derde dag, de zondag, geweest. Hier een korte impressie.

Oog in oog: Lee Konitz en Martial Solal.

Het eerste concert liep uit op een teleurstelling. In de serie Key Figures of Europe (sleutelfiguren uit de Europese jazz) waren twee legenden uitgenodigd: Martial Solal, de 80 jaar oude Franse pianist, die in de jaren vijftig speelde met Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet en Lucky Thomson, had de Moutin tweeling meegebracht, Francis op de bas en Louis op het slagwerk. Ze traden op samen met Lee Konitz, ook tachtig. Hoewel ze vroeger vaak samen speelden, kwamen beide heren deze keer niet verder dan wat onsamenhangende klanken, die geen vonk deden overspringen. Het publiek liep dan ook na het tweede nummer massaal weg, een vertwijfelde Lee Konitz achter latend: Don't they like Jazz? ( Houden die niet van jazz? )

Randy Brecker Electric Band

Dankzij het feit dat de zalen anders waren ingericht en het niet zo druk was, bleek het mogelijk om tussendoor bij andere concerten binnen te lopen. Hierdoor kon ik even ruiken aan het optreden van Stan Tracey ( weer zo'n veteraan) met Benjamin Herman, Dave Holland en het Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra ( zonder Bob Brookmeyer helaas). Ik heb genoten van het concert van Misha Mengelberg, die ook al boven de zeventig is en dus een veteraan genoemd mag worden. Ik had hem nog nooit horen spelen, maar dit concert smaakte naar meer. In de Maashal ben ik nog bij de Randy Brecker Electric Band binnengelopen, maar deze massale harde funk muziek is aan mijn niet besteed.

Hamilton De Holanda Brasilianos Quintet

Er waren twee buitengewoon goede concerten, die voor mij het festival afsloten. Het eerste was met het Richard Galliano and his Tangaria Quintet. Deze Franse accordonist bleek een ervaren entertainer en wist de hele zaal met gemak in te palmen. Hij kreeg dan ook met gemak verschillende staande ovaties. Wat een muzikant - wat een groep !! De Braziliaanse bandolimspeler Hamilton De Holanda, die als speciale gast bij dit optreden zou zijn, kon er, door een vertraagd vliegtuig, niet bij zijn. Gelukkig was hij wel op tijd voor zijn eigen concert met zijn Brasilianos Quintet, dat als afsluiter geprojecteerd stond in de Murray tent. Het werd een schitterend concert, waarover later ongetwijfeld meer.
