Bob Thiele Collective

This record of the Bob Thiele Collective was a surprise for me. It features David Murray, John Hicks, Cecil McBee and Andrew Cyrille and contained some good music. But who was Bob Thiele?

Bob Thiele was born in 1922 and passed away January 1996. Although he started to learned to play the clarinet he became a record producer. At the age of 17 he founded the Signature label and recorded great jazz musicians like Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Errol Garner. As a record producer he became part of the Decca label, led the Impulse label and became head of Verve. He recorded all great jazz artists like John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespy, Sonny Rollins and Archie Shepp. Later he had his own record label, Flying Dutchman, that became part of BMG and Sony. As a co-author he had a million seller with Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World.

One of his projects was the Collective. His plan was to assemble twice a year a group of four great players of the period, to create the music they want to create. This CD is a registration of his first Collective, with four artists, still working on their careers, like Cecil McBee, the double bass player, who recorded and played with all major modern-style musicians like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Abdullah Ibrahim, Sonny Rollins and Chico Freeman. Andrew Cyrille is rather unknown as a drummer, but he is a very subtle free-jazz drummer and highly regarded for his tasteful melodic playing.

John Hicks is known as a versatile skilled piano player and recorded with Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Lester Bowie and Chico Freeman too. During the 1980s he played in groups with Arthur Blythe and David Murray. I heard both Arthur Blythe and David Murray, the latter is the tenor player on this selection, in a 2001 concert at the Kloveniersdoelen in Middelburg ( southwest part of the Netherlands) with the Niehove Jazz Ensemble. I remember from this concert that both musicians were rather uninspired and drunk French cognac with their backs to the audience. David Murray, although grew up as a child learning to play ragtime- and stride piano, became a free-jazz follower, but developed in the 1980s and 1990s to a modern jazz saxophone player. His tenor sax playing reminds me to the music I heard from James Carter, who was inspired by Murray - a rather aggresive way of playing. I enjoyed listening to this album, labeled as the Bob Thiele Collective.

I found a small fragment of David Murray playing at the Village Vanguard somewhere during the 1980s I love to share with you.

Deze CD van het Bob Thiele Collective was voor mij een verasssing. Het collectief bestaat uit David Murray, John Hicks, Cecil McBee en Andrew Cyrille en bevat heerlijke muziek. Maar wie of wat was nu eigenlijk die Bob Thiele?

Bob Thiele werd geboren in 1922 en overleed in januari 1996. Hoewel hij klarinet lessen kreeg, werd hij platenproducent. Als 17-jarige richte hij het Signature label op en nam platen op met musici als Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins en Errol Garner. Als platenproducent werkte hij bij Decca en werd hoofd van het Impulse en Verve label. Hij nam platen op met alle grote jazzmusici, zoals John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespy, Sonny Rollins en Archie Shepp. Later kreg hij zijn eigen label, Flying Dutchman, dat deel werd van BMG en Sony. Zijn grootste succes was het nummer What A Wonderful World met Louis Armstrong, waarvan hij mede-schrijver was.

Eén van zijn projecten was zijn Collective. Twee keer per jaar werd er een groep van vier, op dat moment aan de weg timmerende musici, gevormd, to create the music they want to create. Deze CD is een registratie van het eerste Collective, met vier artiesten, die nog volop bezig waren hun carriere vorm te geven. Zoals Cecil McBee, bassist, die platen opnam en speelde met allerlei moderne jazzmusici zoals Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Abdullah Ibrahim, Sonny Rollins en Chico Freeman. Andrew Cyrille is tamelijk onbekend gebleven als drummer, maar staat bekend als een ervaren muzikant.

John Hicks is vooral bekend als een ervaren veelzijdig pianist die speelde bij Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Lester Bowie en Chico Freeman. In de tachtiger jaren speelde hij veel met Arthur Blythe en David Murray. Zowel Arthur Blythe en David Murray, de laatste speelt tenor op deze CD, hoorde ik in een concert in de Kloveniersdoelen in Middelburg in november 2001 met het Niehove Jazz Ensemble. Ik herinner me van het concert dat de twee musici tamelijk ongeinspireerd waren en met huin rug naar het publiek Franse cognac dronken. David Murray, opgegroeid als kind met ragtime- en stride piano (waarin hij ook les kreeg), groeide uit tot een vertolker van de free-jazz, maar ontwikkelde zich tot een veelzijdig tenor. Ik vond zijn stijl sterk lijken op die van James Carter, die geinspireerd is door zijn muziek. Ik heb van dit album echt genoten en als je de muziek van dit Bob Thiele Collective vindt, neem het dan mee.

Ik vond een filmpje van een optreden van David Murray in de Village Vanguard ergens in de jaren tachtig.
