Jazz For A Sunday Afternoon

It looks a great slogan and logo for the Sunday afternoon jazz concerts in our Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen (south west part of the Netherlands), but it isn't - it is the title of a Solid State LP I found a few month ago.

The Solid State LP is the first one in a long series ( as the cover lines learn) that Solid State wants to release. It wants to re-active the jam sessions as they were organized in the 1940s and 50s. Norman Granz is mentioned as the last great organisator with his JATP ( Jazz At The Philharmonic ) sessions. Solid State wants to breathe new life into these gatherings by organizing the Village Vanguard Sunday Jazz matinees. This Solid State SS 18027 is the first volume.

The matinee was scedulded for the 6th of October 1967 at the Village Vanguard in New York with Dizzy Gillespie as the leader of a session group. On stage Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone and of course Dizzy on the trumpet, Ray Nance, this time he plays the violin and not the trumpet, and Chick Corea, Richard Davis and Elvin Jones ( on one track Mel Lewis) are a solid rhythm section.

During the session seven tunes were recorded and released on three Solid State LPs ( SS 18027 - 18028 - 18034 ). I only have the first one, wich has Blues For Max ( Max = Max Gordon, the Vanguard impresario), Lullaby of the Leaves and Lover Come Back To Me.

The music has lengthly solos and feels not very arranged - two parts that seem to be perfect elements for a jam session. Dizzy is at the helm; he sets up the solo order, makes the opening and closing themes. It became a nice record with a lot of good solos by Pepper Adams and Dizzy Gillespie. I don't like the Ray Nance violin in this recording - I guess he did do a better job playing the trumpet alongside Dizzie this time for me.

Het zou een schitterend motto kunnen zijn voor de zondagmiddagconcerten in de Porgy en Bess Jazzclub in Terneuzen, maar dat is het niet: Het is de titel van een serie Solid State LPs, waarvan ik er één vond een paar maanden geleden. Deze Solid State LP is de eerste in een lange serie, tenminste als ik de tekst in de LP moet geloven. Solid State wil hiermee de jamsessions nieuw leven in blazen, die sinds de JATP (Jazz At The Philharmonic) concerten van Norman Granz uit de jaren veertig en vijftig in het slop zijn gekomen. Solid State organiseerde daarvoor de zgn. Village Vanguard Sunday Jazz matinees. Deze Solid State SS 18027 is daarvan het eerste deel.

Deze matinee was gepland op zondagmiddag 6 oktober 1967 in de Village Vanguard in New York met Dizzy Gillespie als de leider van de sessiegroep. Op het podium staan Pepper Adams met zijn baritonsaxofoon en natuurlijk Dizzy op trompet. Ray Nance speelt deze keer geen trompet maar de viool en de ritmesectie wordt gevormd door Chick Corea, Richard Davis en Elvin Jones ( op één nummer vervangen door Mel Lewis).

Tijdens deze jamsession worden in totaal zeven nummers opgenomen, uitgebracht op drie Solid State LPs ( SS 18027 - 18028 - 18034 ). Zelf heb ik alleen de eerste, die de nummers Blues For Max ( Max = Max Gordon, de impresario van de Village Vanguard ), Lullaby of the Leaves en Lover Come Back To Me.

De LP bevat lange solo's en een wat losse structuur - twee zaken, die bij een jamsessie horen, denk ik. Dizzy staat aan het roer en regelt de solo volgorde, begint en eindigt elk nummer en houdt de boel gaande. Het is een mooie LP geworden met goede solo's van Pepper Adams en Dizzy Gillespie. Zelf hou ik niet zo van het vioolspel van Ray Nance - het ware beter geweest als hij naast Dizzy zijn trompet had gespeeld.
