Robert Altman's Kansas City

Robert Altman, producer of films, died on the 20th November 2006, 81 years old. He made a lot of films for cinema and TV. He became famous with the film version of MASH and Alfred Hitchcocks TV shows in the 1960s. His film The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993) and Kansas City (1996) were some of his last productions. He got an Oscar for his complete works this year.

For me Robert Altman is the maker of the 1996 film Kansas City. The story is simple.

It is 1934. The US is ravaged by the Depression, but Kansas City was an oasis of opportunity for risk-takers and entrepreneurs. Gambling is illegal but freely available. The maffia runs the show. Its drug trafficking and gambling activities take place in the bars, where jazz music is available.

The story in the film, with Jennifer Jason Leigh as Bondie O'Hara, a telegraph operator and Harry Bellafonte as Seldon Seen, the maffia-boss as principal characters, isn't for me the most important part of this production - it's the music played in this film. The actors in the band that play in the bar in this film are all well known jazz musicians, like Kevin Mahogany (vo), Nicholas Payton (tp), Don Byron (cl s), James Carter (s), Jesse Davis (s), David Fathead Newman (ts), David Murray (s), Joshua Redman (ts), Russell Malone (g), Mark Whitfield (g), Geri Allen (p), Cyrus Chestnut (p), Ron Carter (b), Christian McBride (b) and Victor Lewis (dm). This line-up reads as an all-star band and it is. In the film there are a lot of small shots of this band in different groups, but the fragments are too split up to enjoy the music

I guess Altman must have understood that. He made a documentary, titled Jazz '34, about the music in Kansas City, using the complete shots he made with the band. It tells the story of the musical life in the 1930s in Kansas City, refering to 1930s musicians. These performances, although arranged and fit as in the 1930s, represent for me jazz as it might have been played in the 1930s and a who-is-who in modern jazz music, as most of the musicians are still active in performing.

I love to show this documentary to my friends, even if they have no affection with jazz. It shows an atmospheric description of the musical culture of those days.

For me it is also important that I have seen most of these musicians in live performances during the last ten years. ( Nicholas Payton, James Carter, Jesse Davis, David Fathead Newman, Joshua Redman and Cyrus Chestnut ).

Robert Altman, film regisseur, is op 20 november 2006 op 81 jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij maakte veel films voor bioscoop en televisie. Hij werd bekend door zijn verfilming van MASH en de Albert Hitchcock TV shows in de jaren zestig. De film The Player (1992), Short Cuts ( 1993) en Kansas City (1996) zijn enkele van zijn laatste producties. Hij kreeg het afgelopen jaar een Oscar voor zijn complete oeuvre.

Voor mij is Robert Altman vooral de maker van de film Kansas City (1996). Het verhaal is eenvoudig.

Het is 1934 en Amerika lijdt onder de Depressie, waarin Kansas City zich ontwikkelde als het centrum voor gelukszoekers en scharrelaars. Gokken mag niet, maar gebeurt openlijk in de bars. De maffia deelt de lakens uit. Het gokken en de handel in verdovende middelen vindt plaats vanuit de bars, waar volop jazzmuziek wordt gespeeld.

Het verhaal, waarin Jennifer Jason Leigh als Bondie O'Hara, een telegrafiste en Harry Bellafonte als Seldon Seen, de maffiabaas speelt, is voor mij niet zo belangrijk - dat is de muziek gespeeld in de film.

De acteurs in de band, die in de bar spelen, zijn geen acteurs, maar bekende jazzmusici, zoals Kevin Mahogany (vo), Nicholas Payton (tp), Don Byron (cl s), James Carter (s), Jesse Davis (s), David Fathead Newman (ts), David Murray (s), Joshua Redman (ts), Russell Malone (g), Mark Whitfield (g), Geri Allen (p), Cyrus Chestnut (p), Ron Carter (b), Christian McBride (b) en Victor Lewis (dm). De bezetting van deze band is die van een all-star band. In de film valt er veel te genieten van deze musici, in wisselende samenstelling, hoewel het bij kleine fragmenten blijft en dat is jammer.

Ik denk dat Altman besefte dat het zonde was om de originele opnamen niet te gebruiken. Daarom maakte hij een documentaire getiteld Jazz '34, waarin hij de complete opnamen kon gebruiken. De documentaire vertelt het verhaal over de muziekscene in de jaren dertig in Kansas City, uitgaand van de cast in de film en opgeleukt met originele beelden. De muziek, natuurlijk gearrangeerd en aangekleed alsof alles in de jaren dertig opgenomen is, is een who-is-who geworden van nog steeds actieve hedendaagse jazzmusici.

Ik laat deze documentaire graag zien aan mensen, die niets of weinig met jazz hebben. Het geeft een sfeerbeeld van de muziekcultuur uit die tijd.

Voor mij persoonlijk is het leuk dat ik veel musici uit deze film al een keer live op het poduium heb zien spelen (Nicholas Payton, James Carter, Jesse Davis, David Fathead Newman, Joshua Redman and Cyrus Chestnut )
