Tenor saxophonist Rick Margitza performed with the Ivan Paduart Trio in a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the south west part of The Netherlands, on the 7th of February, 2010.
It was a pity that the name of Rick Margitza, who played with great names like Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner and Miles Davis didn't guarantee a full house: half of the seats of the club were empty. Rick Margitza played for a short time in Miles Davis last quintet, where he replaced Kenny Garrett at the 1989 European tour and is to be heard in one tune ( Hannibal) of Davis' Amandla album). He is now a sought after tenor saxophone player and a member of the Moutin Reunion Quartet - a quartet of the French Moutin twins Francois ( on bass) and Louis on drums. He replaced Sylvain Boef on saxophone in May 2003 and toured with the group along the US east coast venues, where they recorded the album Red Moon. I really like that album Red Moon. I wrote about this album, which was released in a hard cover comic book, titled Louis & Francois Moutin with drawings by Francois Moutin ( BD Jazz 029)

Ivan Paduart started his career at the age of 17, discovered by Michel Herr, then the piano player of Toots Thielemans, at a master class. Soon after that event he played with established jazz musicians and both Mimi as Philippe are colleagues from this very beginning. His first recordings, like Aftertouch, are from 1990, in which he already played with Mimi Verderame and two years later he is to be heard at the European Jazz contest with Philippe Aerts. I heard Ivan for the first time five years ago at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in a concert by Richard Rousselet and JeanFrancois Prince who, I remember well, impressed in an Electric Miles performance at the guitar.

Both Philippe Aerts and Mimi Verderame are skilled musicians and play together for ages, which makes it a solid rhythm section. Two weeks ago Mimi performed with Rony Verbiest in this club and both Mimi as Philippe are the regular members of Philip Catherine rhythm section.

The Trio + one started its first set with a Margitza composition, Street of Dreams and continued with compositions by Ivan Paduart, Disconnected and First Rays. Both tunes Rick and Ivan recorded on their 2001 album Still. The first set finished with the Paduart composition Can't Wait. The audience had to wait until the second set to hear Rick Margitza at his best.

The second set, Ivan had promised to play six sets, started with the tunes Blue Landscape and Igor, dedicated to Ivan's 13 years old son, both compositions by Ivan Paduaert. Rick surprised at the end of the set with the tune Love Dance. In a lengthy opening solo, using altissimo-register notes, Rick learned that he has listened well to Coltrane and trumpet player Maynard Ferguson in whose band he played during the 1980s. The tune developed into an inspiring duet between him and the rhythm section. It showed both Rick as Mimi at their best - it was a pity that it was the one but last tune of the concert, as the audience loved to hear more. Fact was that Margitza had to be in time in Brussels to catch the train to Paris in times, so ..............

At the end of the concert Hans Zuiderbaan, chairman of Porgy en Jazz, announced some upcoming concerts, all posted at the Porgy en Bess website and hinted that the club has booked some bands for the new concert season already. Wouldn't it be great to invite the Moutin Reunion Quartet next season? It would be a great opportunity to let Rick Margitza finish the job....................

Tenorist Rick Margitza speelde op zondagmiddag 7 februari 2010 met het Ivan Paduart Trio in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen. Het was jammer dat de naam Rick Margitza niet bij veel mensen een belletje had doen rinkelen, want hij heeft heel wat grote namen in zijn cv. staan: Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner en Miles Davis deden ooit een beroep op hem. Helaas dus geen afgeladen tent voor Rick Margitza op tenorsax, Ivan Paduart achter de Steinway, Philippe Aerts op bas en Mimi Venderame op slagwerk. Rick Margitza speelde korte tijd in Miles Davis laatste kwintet als vervanger van Kenny Garrett, die in 1989 niet mee kon op Miles' Europese tournee en in één nummer (Hannibal) te horen is op Miles vrij onbekende Amandla album. Hij is nu een gewild tenorsaxofonist en lid van het Moutin Reunion Quartet - een kwartet rond de Franse tweeling Moutin: basspeler Francois en slagwerker Louis. Hij verving in mei 2003 saxofonist Sylvain Beuf in het kwartet en toerde mee langs podia aan de oostkust van de US, wat resulteerde in opnamen voor de CD Red Moon, een bijzonder album, vooral omdat het bijgevoegd is in een stripalbum getekend door Francois zelf, getiteld: Louis & Francois Moutin ( BD Jazz 029)

Ivan Paduart begon zijn carrière als 17-jarige, ontdekt tijdens een masterclass door Michel Herr, pianist bij Toots Thielemans. Al snel werd hij gevraagd mee te spelen met gevestigde namen en zowel Mimi als Philippe waren in dat prille begin al collega's. Mimi speelde mee op zijn eerste opnamen, zoals op Aftertouch, en twee jaar later begeleidde Philippe Aerts Ivan tijdens de European Jazz contest. Zelf hoorde ik Ivan voor het eerst vijf jaar geleden in Porgy en Bess in een optreden met Richard Rousselet, waarin vooral gitarist JeanFrancois Prince me is bijgebleven, omdat hij toen een aantal "electric Miles" nummers deed herleven.......

Zowel Philippe Aerts als Mimi Verderame ( twee weken geleden bij Rony Verbiest), o.a.doorwinterde begeleiders van Philip Catherine, horen tot de solide kern van de Belgische jazzscene.

Het Ivan Paduart Trio + one startte de eerste set met een compositie van Margitza, Street of Dreams en twee nummers van Ivan Paduart: Disconnected en First Rays. Beide nummers namen Rick en Ivan op in 2001 op hun enige gemeenschappelijke plaat tot nu toe, Still. De eerste set werd afgesloten met de compositie Can't Wait van Ivan Paduart. Pas in de tweede set kreeg Rick Margitza het meer naar zijn zin en liet hij horen waarom hij meegekomen was.

De tweede ( en laatste) set, Ivan beloofde er zes (!), begon met de nummers Blue Landscape en Igor, geschreven voor Ivan's 13-jarige zoon. Rick verraste aan het eind van de set met een lange openingssolo in het nummer Love Dance, waarin hij gebruik maakte van het zgn. altissimo-register, een techniek, die hij afgekeken moet hebben van o.a. Maynard Ferguson en hij maakte het nummer af met een schitterende Coltrane-achtige interpretatie van het nummer in samenspraak met Mimi Verderame, die hierbij een opzwepend ritme neerzette - muziek waarbij wat gebeurt. Zowel Rick als Mimi speelden hier op bun best. Helaas was het, voor het publiek, één van de laatste nummers ( de trein naar Parijs moest gehaald worden in Brussel) en een toegift zat er dus niet in.

Op het eind van het concert kondigde voorzitter Hans Zuiderbaan een aantal geplande concerten aan en tilde alvast een tipje van de sluier op m.b.t. het nieuwe seizoen. Misschien zou een optreden van het Moutin Reunion Quartet wel een mooie kans zijn voor Rick Margitza om zijn werk in Terneuzen af te maken...............

The Artist in Residence of the Porgy and Bess jazz club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, is, during this concert season, Rony Verbiest, an Antwerp jazz musician. On the 17th of January, 2010 the second concert in a series of three, was scheduled.

He brought his friends from the Antwerp Hopper café, Harry Happel, Mary Hehuat and Mimi Verderame to Terneuzen. This time he had left his accordion or baritone saxophone at home and brought his harmonica. An interesting choice in my opinion, as I hadn't heard him playing the harmonica before during a complete concert. I'd heard him in two previous concerts, both in Porgy en Bess, with Heyn Van de Geyn and with the Cauter family; both with an accordion in his hands. Harry Happel ( photo courtesy Hans Koert)

This time he had brought three excellent musicians. Harry Happel surprised playing the (electric) piano, but his laptop also contained a complete string orchestra, which gave his accompaniment an extra dimension, which pleased Rony visible. Mary Hehuat, was very pleased to play the "new" Porgy en Bass (!), which was officially inaugurated by Reginald Veal lately. What a great sound !! - His Van Zalinge bass remained untouched during the two sets. Mary played with Jack Van Poll and his Three-Oh and with Harry Happel in his Trio Intrioduction, featuring Frits Landesbergen on drums. He also recorded with his own trio and is the manager of the Hopper cafe in Antwerp.

Dominique Mimi Verderame is a versatile drummer, who is to be found at numerous recording session. He also could left his drum set in his car and played the Porgy and Bess set. I heard Mimi Verderame before at the International Jazz Festival in Middelburg some years ago in a trio with Philip Catherine and Philippe Aerts. During the concert Rony and his friends played tunes, most from the American songbook, like You and the Night and the Music, the Nearness of You, Tenderly and Stardust. Especially the tune Nature Boy will be remembered, like Old Friend, dedicated to his father and an ode to the master on the harmonica himself, good old Toots.

A great performance, but although some people in the audience had hoped that Rony would play the accordion too , even an old bandoneon on stage couldn't entice him. De mondharmonica is het ideale instrument voor accordeonisten die willen stoppen met roken ( = The harmonica is the most ideal instrument for accordion players who love to stop smoking): he explained his choice.

Volle bak tijdens nieuwjaarsconcert in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen

De Artist in Residence van de Porgy and Bess jazzclub in Terneuzen is dit seizoen de Antwerpse muzikant Rony Verbiest. Op zondagmiddag 17 januari 2010 gaf hij zijn tweede concert in een reeks van drie voor een afgeladen zaal.

Hij had een aantal vrienden meegebracht, waarmee hij regelmatig in Café Hopper in Antwerpen speelt en daarom het Hopper Trio genoemd werd: Harry Happel, Mary Hehuat en Mimi Verderame. Deze keer had hij zijn accordeon thuisgelaten evenals zijn baritonsax en alleen zijn "muziekske" meegebracht, zoals Toots zijn geliefde instrument meestal noemt. Een interessante keus, in mijn opinie, want op dit instrument had ik hem eerder nog niet een heel concert horen spelen. In eerdere concerten, waarin Rony Verbiest te horen was met bassist Heyn Van de Geyn en de Cauterfamilie had hij steeds de accordeon op schoot. Harry Happel ( foto: Hans Koert)

Deze keer dus louter mondharmonica en drie geroutineerde begeleiders: Harry Happel verraste met zijn (electrische) piano, en in de laptop van Harry zat zelfs een compleet strijkorkest, dat een aantal ballads een extra dimensie gaf - tot groot genoegen van Rony. Mary Hehuat was zo gelukkig dat hij zijn Van Zalingebas in de hoes kon laten en gebruik mocht maken van de "nieuwe" Porgy en Bass (!), die vorig jaar door Reginald Veal werd ingewijd. Mary nam platen op met het Jack van Poll's Three-Oh en met Harry Happel's Intrioduction. Ook is hij te horen op plaat met zijn eigen groepen. Hij is de manager van De Hopper in Antwerpen.
Hij genoot zichtbaar van het schitterende instrument dat hij in handen mocht houden: wat een klank !!

Ook Dominique "Mimi" Verderame kon zijn drumstel ingepakt in de auto laten liggen; hij gebruikte het Porgy en Bess drumstel. Mimi is een veelgevraagd slagwerker, die op veel platen terug te horen is. Ik hoorde Mimi Verderame eerder in Middelburg tijdens het Internationale Jazzfestival met Philip Catherine en Philippe Aerts Hij begon zijn carrière aan de zijde van altsaxofonist Jacques Pelzer. Tijdens het concert werden vooral nummers uit het zgn. American Songbook gespeeld, zoals You and the Night and the Music, the Nearness of You, Tenderly en Stardust. Vooral het nummer Nature Boy sprong eruit, maar ook het nummer Old Friend, dat Rony opdroeg aan zijn vader en een ode werd aan zijn leermeester op de mondharmonica, good old Toots.

Een mooi concert, en hoewel sommigen gehoopt hadden dat Rony ook de accordeon meegebracht zou hebben, was dat geen gemis. Zelfs een in allerijl op het podium geplaatste oude bandoneon kon Rony niet verleiden: De mondharmonica is het ideale instrument voor accordeonisten die willen stoppen met roken, zo legde hij zijn keus voor de mondharmonica uit.
