The kind of life I have is so much greater than the average person’s – I’m close to a creative thing that’s exciting and beautiful to behold.
You get the feeling that if the whole world could experience it, there’d be a lot less trouble. I guess that’s why, after 30 years, I’m still so hung up on it ( Howard Rumsey ( in an 1979 interview with Leonard Feathers ( The Passion of Jazz Aides & Abettors) p. 167))

The Lighthouse Café - Hermosa Beach ( mid 1950s)

In the 1979 interview Howard Rumsey looks back to his 30th anniversary in the night club business. From 1949 up to 1972 he was the manager of the famous Lighthouse café in Hermosa Beach (California) and from 1972 up to 1979 he exploited the Concerts by the Sea, a club, in fact a mini-theater, on the pier in Rodondo Beach, California. Most of us will remember Howard Rumsey from the period that he was the director of his Lighthouse All-Stars and the leading source of inspiration for the west coast jazz scene during the 1950s and 1960s. I wrote about that in a previous blog titled Lighthouse All-Stars

A few weeks ago I found at a second hand book market a pile of jazz LP’s and although it contained a lot of records, you could easily label as "rubbish", I found a 25 cm Contemporary LP titled Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All-Stars Vol. 5 In The Solo Spotlight ( Contemporary C2515 ). Both the cover as the record were in excellent condition, so …………. It made my day.The record contained six tracks, all with typical titles: Howard, Claude, Bud, Coop, S & B and Stan; a great challenge to find out what the meaning is for these rather weird titles. Well, I guess, most of you will understand how these titles were born, if you learn that the musicians of this all-star group were: Howard Rumsey, leader and bass player, Bud Shank, alto saxophone; Bob Cooper tenor saxophone; Stan Levey drums; Claude Williamson piano; Stu Williamson trumpet and Bob Enevoldsen valve trombone. Mind that the subtitle is In The Solo Spotlight, so I hope the penny has dropped. Thanks to the liner notes by Dick Williams, entertainment editor of the Los Angeles Mirror we know a bit more about the period this recording session was made: August 1954. Some 400 people were turned away at a little beachfront jazz bistro in Hermosa Beach called “The Lighthouse” last Saturday night. Several hundred others, who arrived early, managed to sandwich themselves inside. …… And lately, the nightly fog along the coast has been as thick as spider webs in a haunted house. What’s the lure? Last night I found out when I wandered down through the mists to the foot of the Hermosa pier. The Lighthouse is the home of an exceptional jazz group known as Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All-Stars. In the last six years they have built the place into the top citadel of jazz on the south coast. ( Dick Williams – liner notes)

In the Leonard Feather interview Howard explains how it all started. Tiring of travelling ( Howard Rumsey toured a decade with Vido Musso and Stan Kenton ), I decided to settle in Southern California.

One night he visited Hermosa Beach: I had some memories of the beach area, because they had always had ballrooms there before the war, and I had played at a dime-a-dance place there. But the ballrooms had disappeared and there was only one old resort with a Polynesian decor, with merchant seamen eating and drinking, known as The Lighthouse. No music at all, but at least it had a bandstand. The owner was John Levine and Howard suggested to organise some Sunday jam sessions. Kid, are you gonna try to tell me what to do with this place? Everybody else has. I talked some more, Howard continued, and finally he said Okay, let’s try it out. The next Sunday I put together a fine combo, opened the front door – there was no p.a. system, but we kept the music loud enough to roar out into the street – and within an hour Levine had more people in the room than he’d seen in a month. The Lighthouse café (mid 1950s)

The earliest live recordings in the Lighthouse were in January 1952 with musicians like Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre; the first Lighthouse All-Stars recordings are dated half a year later.

I learned that in the discographies I have, the Lighthouse All-Stars recordings contained a lot of dubious information, even for my 25 cm LP, so I went through the points once again in a small discography below this blog.

Bossa Nova: Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars in the Frankly Jazz TV-program ( early 1960s)

It took us two years to turn the club around from merchant seamen’s hangout to a jazz-conductive atmosphere. In the interview Howard tells about the guest musicians who played in the club, like Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Wes Montgomery, The Three Sounds ( Gene Harris - Andrew Simpkins - Bill Dowdy ), Mose Allison, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan and Charlie Parker, who came in with a saxophone in a terrible condition. After an hour of frustration he went outside down the alley and heard someone playing a tenor sax in another club. Charlie asked if he could use the tenor and when the cat said yes, Charlie jumped on the stand and we all left the Lighthouse and listened to him while he blew for two fantastic hours. After John Levine passed away in 1970, Howard helped Levine’s son for a few years in the Lighthouse, but in fact, the club was too small for concerts with big bands. I still dreamed about an ideal club. He found another venue, which he opened in 1972 and named it Concerts by the Sea.

Howard Rumsey looked back to his 30th anniversary in the night club business. The most important thing I’ve learned is that the management or the owner must avoid, at all costs, interfering with the music. If you leave the artists alone to do their own thing, the sounds can come alive and express their natural strength, but if someone comes between the music and the audience, it withers and dies like a fragile flower.

Mijn leven is zoveel rijker dan dat van de doorsnee mens - Ik zit met mijn neus bovenop allerlei creatieve zaken die ontstaan en waard zijn om te bekijken. Het geeft me het gevoel dat als de hele wereld dat ook zo zou kunnen ervaren, er heel wat minder ellende zou zijn. Ik denk dat dat de reden is, dat ik na dertig jaar dit nog steeds niet wil loslaten ( Howard Rumsey ( in een interview uit 1979 met Leonard Feathers ( in: The Passion of Jazz Aides & Abettors) p. 167))
The Lighthouse Café - Hermosa Beach ( mid 1950s)

In dit interview kijkt Howard Rumsey terug op zijn 30-jarig jubileum als manager van jazzclubs. Van 1949 tot 1972 leidde hij het beroemde Lighthouse café in Hermosa Beach - Californië en vanaf 1972 tot 1979 een club, genaamd Concerts by the Sea, eigenlijk een minitheater op de pier van Rodondo Beach, Californië. De meesten zullen Howard Rumsey vooral herinneren als de leider van de Lighthouse All-Stars, maar bovenal als inspirator van de West Coast jazz scene in de jaren vijftig en zestig van de vorige eeuw. Een paar weken geleden vond ik op een boekenmarkt, voorafgaand aan het Schaapsscheerdersfeest van Nisse ( zo kom je nog eens ergens) een stapel lp’s en tussen de rijkelijk te koop aangeboden “rommel” ( Alle 13 in een dozijn goed) vond ik een 25 cm Contemporary LP Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All-Stars Vol. 5 In The Solo Spotlight ( Contemporary C2515 ). Zowel de plaat als de hoes waren nog z.g.a.n., dus ……… mijn zomer kon niet meer stuk.

De plaat bevat een zestal nummers, alle met typische titels: Howard, Claude, Bud, Coop, S & B en Stan. Mijns inziens een mooie uitdaging voor “per seconde wijzer” of zo iets om eens uit te zoeken waar deze vreemde titels vandaan komen. Als ik de bezetting van de Lighthouse All-Stars geef en de titel van de plaat: In The Solo Spotlight, zal e.e.a. wellicht wat duidelijker worden: Howard Rumsey, leider en bassist, Bud Shank, altsaxofoon; Bob Cooper tenorsax; Stan Levey slagwerk; Claude Williamson piano; Stu Williamson trompet en Bob Enevoldsen ventieltrombone. Dankzij het verhaaltje op de hoes geschreven door Dick Williams, Entertainment Editor (= redacteur amusement) van de Los Angeles Mirror komen we wat meer te weten over de periode waarin de opnamen gemaakt werden. De opnamen vonden plaats in augustus 1954. Some 400 people were turned away at a little beachfront jazz bistro in Hermosa Beach called The Lighthouse last Saturday night. In het interview met Leonard Feather vertelt Howard hoe het allemaal begon. Moe van het rondtrekken ( Howard Rumsey had tien jaar lang rondgetrokken als muzikant met Vido Musso en Stan Kenton) besloot Howard om zich te vestigen in het zuiden van Californië.

Het Lighthouse café (jaren vijftig)
De eerste live opnamen vanuit de Lighthouse dateren van januari 1952 met muzikanten als Art Pepper, Shorty Rodgers en Jimmy Giuffre; de eerste echte Lighthouse All-Stars studio-opnamen dateren van een half jaar later. In de discografiën, die ik vond, wordt er nogal gerommeld met gegevens, zo ook met de informatie van "mijn" 25 cm LP ( C2515). In de discografie hieronder heb ik geprobeerd alles een beetje op een rijtje te krijgen.

In het interview vertelt Howard over de verschillende gastspelers, die in de club optraden, zoals Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Wes Montgomery, The Three Sounds ( Gene Harris - Andrew Simpkins - Bill Dowdy), Mose Allison, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan en Charlie Parker, die binnenstapte met een aftandse saxofoon. Na een uurtje frustratie-spelen, ging hij de straat op en hoorde iemand in een andere club op een tenorsax spelen; die mocht hij lenen en Bird speelde nog een paar uur de sterren van de hemel. Nadat John Levine overleden was in 1970, hielp Howard de zoon van Levine, nog een paar jaar met het exploiteren van de club, maar vond, dat de Lighthouse eigenlijk te klein was voor grote orkesten. Hij droomde van een grotere club en vond die in 1972. Hij noemde die plaats Concerts by the Sea.
Howard Rumsey blikt in het interview terug op een carrière van 30 jaar als clubmanager. The most important thing I’ve learned is that the management or the owner must avoid, at all costs, interfering with the music. (= Het belangrijkste wat ik geleerd heb, is, dat de leiding van de club zich, ten allen tijde, niet met de muziek moet bemoeien. ) If you leave the artists alone to do their own thing, the sounds can come alive and express their natural strength, but if someone comes between the music and the audience, it withers and dies like a fragile flower. ( Als je artiesten hun gang laat gaan, dan komt de muziek tot leven en komt het tot zijn recht komen, maar als er iemand tussen de muziek en het publiek komt staan, dan verwelkt het en verdord als een tere bloem).

Howard Rumsey vierde in oktober 2007 in Catalina’s Bar and Grill in Hollywood zijn 90ste verjaardag.

Lighthouse All-Stars

In the 1950s the southern California seashore club The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach (Cal) became a standard in west coast jazz music. In 1949 Howard Rumsey, who had been a bass player in the Stan Kenton's band, and John Levine, owner of the Lighthouse, decided to start a jam session on a weekly base. Each Sunday afternoon musicians from the west coast gathered in the Lighthouse and played from two o'clock in the afternoon, up to, most of the time, two o'clock at night.

A lot of people, who were enjoying beach life came to these sunday concerts. Sunday we had jazz all day, Shorty Rogers remembered, the Lighthouse is just half a block from the beach. People would come into the club in their bathing suits in the afternoon. And at two in the morning, when we closed some of them would still be sitting there in their swinsuits. The musicians who played on these jam sessions called them selves The Lighthouse All-Stars and you could find all kinds of well known west coast jazz musicians in it like Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Milt Bernard, Shelly Manne and Jimmy Giuffre, who loved to play jazz near their homes.

In February 1953, now 55 years ago, the Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars recorded for the first time eight tracks, which were released by Contemporary, and reissued in 1991 on an Original Jazz Classics (OJCCD-151-2). This record might be hard to find, but five of these first tracks were reissued on the 2006 Saga Modern Series CD West Coast Jazz Live - The Lighthouse Concerts and has two more sessions ( May 1953 and June 1955) made by the Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars.
The Jazz On The Westcoast - The Lighthouse documentary by film maker Ken Koenig gives some interesting shots in a preview.

I found a fragment from a 1965 TV-show with the Lighthouse All-Stars featuring Bob Cooper on tenor sax (also present on the May 1953 and 1955 recordings), Bobby Bryant on trumpet, Forrest Westbrooke on piano, an unknown bass player and a great drummer Doug Sides, I heard last year as the accompanist of Roberta Gambarini in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen (The Netherlands). I love to share this fragment with you.

In de jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw werd de strandtent The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach - Zuid Californië (USA) het symbool van de West Coast Jazz. In 1949 besloten Howard Rumsey, zelf altijd bassist geweest in de band van Stan Kenton, en John Levine, uitbater van de Lighthouse, een wekelijkse jamsessie te gaan organiseren. Elke zondagmiddag verzamelden muzikanten zich in The Lighthouse om er te spelen en dat ging vaak door tot twee uur 's nachts.

Veel strandgasten, sommigen nog in zwemkleding, bezochten deze jamsessies op zondagmiddag. Sunday we had jazz all day, herinnert Shorty Rogers zich, the Lighthouse is just half a block from the beach. People would come into the club in their bathing suits in the afternoon. And at two in the morning, when we closed some of them would still be sitting there in their swinsuits. ( = Op zondag was er de hele dag jazz te horen. De Lighthouse lag vlak bij het strand. Het gebeurde dat mensen 's middags in hun badpak kwamen luisteren en er 's nachts nog steeds waren, in hun zwemkleding. ). De musici, die op deze wekelijkse bijeenkomsten speelden gingen zich de Lighthouse All-Stars noemen en je vond er allerlei, later beroemd geworden musici in als Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Milt Bernard, Shelly Manne en Jimmy Giuffre; allemaal mensen, die het fijn vonden vlak bij huis te kunnen spelen.

In februari 1953, nu 55 jaar geleden, namen de Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars voor het eerst acht nummers op, die uitgebracht werden op een Contemporary LP en later uitkwamen op een CD te vinden op een Original Jazz Classics (OJCCD-151-2) uit 1991. Deze plaat is nu niet meer te vinden, maar gelukkig zijn vijf van de acht nummers ook te vinden in de Modern Series van Saga West Coast Jazz Live - The Lighthouse Concerts ( Saga 983 975 ). Op deze schitterende plaat staan nog twee extra sessies ( mei 1953 en juni 1955), gemaakt door de Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars.
Er is over dit etablisement door Ken Koenig een documentaire gemaakt getiteld The Jazz On The Westcoast - The Lighthouse; een voorbeschouwing geeft interessante informatie en beelden.

Ik vond een fragment uit 1965 van deze Lighthouse All-Stars, tien jaar na de Saga CD opnamen, dat ik jullie niet wil onthouden. Je ziet tenorsaxofonist Bob Cooper, die ook al in de 1953 (mei) en 1955 opnamen meespeelt, met verder Bobby Bryant op trompet, Forrest Westbrooke op piano, een onbekend gebleven bassist en een geweldige drummer: Doug Sides, die ik afgelopen najaar bij Roberta Gambarini hoorde spelen in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen ( 6 oktober 2007). Geniet van deze oude TV-opnamen.
