Eubie Blake Remembered-3

A few weeks ago I made a contribution about the great album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake. One of the readers who sent me his remembrances of Eubie Blake ( 1883-1983) was Lee Munsick. His reaction was very interesting and I asked him to publish his remembrances in my daily Keep Swinging web log. You can find his first contribution here. His second one was posted a few days later, and his final one is published today.

Back in New Jersey, every year we at Yesteryear ( in the Morris County Cultural Center outside Morristown, New Jersey), held a benefit show. The first with Max Morath was a week before the opening of the museum in October, but the others were all in late May or early June. I have known Max since the 1960s, when I produced Jaycee benefit shows (Jaycee means: Junior Chambers) in which he was featured, along with other notable performers. The Yesteryear benefits in the 70s became a highlight of the social scene in affluent Morris County. We were blessed with such performers as William Bolcom and Joan Morris (then affianced), Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt (married), repeat demand performances by Morath, and a number of other nostalgic programs, 7 or 8 in total.

The only one which we at Yesteryear actually produced ourselves, featured Eubie Blake. It wasn't until just before I introduced Eubie's performance that I learned it, but ours was World Premiere of Eubie's Rhapsody in Ragtime! It also featured screening a very early 1920s Lee de Forest Phonofilm (pioneer optical sound on the film) with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, a very young Eddie Cantor, and the hugely popular DeWolf Hopper reciting his perennial favorite, "Casey at the Bat".

We also played an Aeolian piano roll cut by Eubie Blake, while he told us the intriguing story of how it came about. The program book included a copy of the first paycheck made out by Thomas A. Edison to Eubie Blake for his first phonograph cylinder, a sound recording which we also played. A long program, it was a phenomenal evening which anyone present was sure to remember for years to come.

Carl Seltzer managed Eubie Blake and produced the wonderful series of Eubie Blake Music LPs. Carl recorded our presentation, edited down the nearly 3-hourshow, and put it out in LP form. I wished it could have been 2 LPs for more of the program, but I had the pleasure of writing the liner notes. I believe that it and several other former EBM issues are still available in CD form.
Eubie Blake was a wonderful gentleman. And gentle man. A phenomenal talent. Marion, his wife, was a delight, and I miss them both. I shall treasure these and other memories with them and the many other folk I have mentioned as well as others, until I reach that Centennial figure myself. Wish me luck!

Een paar weken geleden plaatste ik een bijdrage over het schitterende album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake. Eén van de bezoekers van deze blog, Lee Munsick, stuurde me zijn herinneringen aan Eubie Blake (1883-1983) en ik vroeg hem of ik ze mocht plaatsen op deze Keep Swinging web log. De eerste bijdrage vind je hier: de tweede verscheen een paar dagen later en vandaag verschijnt het derde en laatste deel.

Elk jaar organiseerden we in New Jersey in ons Yesteryears museum ( in het Morris County Cultural Center buiten Morristown, New Jersey) een benefietavond. De eerste met Max Morath, de ragtime pianist, was een week voordat we ons museum openden in oktober, maar later hielden we ze in mei of juni. Ik ken Max Morath als vanaf de jaren zestig toen ik de benefietconcerten organiseerde voor Jaycee (= Junior Chambers), waarin hij optrad met andere musici van naam. De benefietavonden in Yesteryear in de jaren zeventig waren de hoogtepunten voor de gemeenschap van Morris County. We waren zo gelukkig om musici als William Bolcom en Joan Morris (toen verloofd), Earl Wrightson en Lois Hunt (getrouwd) en verschillende optredens van Max Morath en verder nog een aantal nostalgische programma's - alles bij elkaar zo'n 7 tot 8 avonden.

De enige, die wij als Yesteryear zelf organiseerden was de avond met Eubie Blake. Ik ontdekte pas vlak voor zijn optreden dat we een wereldprimeur hadden van zijn pas gecomponeerde Rhapsody in Ragtime. Verder konden we een hele oude geluidsfilm laten zien, een Lee de Forest Phonofilm (hij was een pionier op het gebied van geluid op film) uit begin jaren twintig met daarop Eubie Blake en Noble Sissle, een nog erg jonge Eddie Cantor, en de toen zeer populaire DeWolf Hopper die zijn favoriete "Casey at the Bat" voorlas.

We speelden ook een Aeolian pianoroll af, gestoken door Eubie Blake, waarbij hij ons kon vertellen hoe deze roll tot stand gekomen was. In het programmaboekje hadden we verder een oud salarisstrookje van Thomas A. Edison voor Eubie Blake afgedrukt voor het maken van zijn eerste phonograaf-wasrol, een geluidsopname die we ook afdraaiden. Het was een volgeladen programma, maar voor velen ontzettend interessant en onvergetelijk.
Carl Seltzer was de manager van Eubie Blake en bracht een schitterende serie Eubie Blake Music LPs uit. Carl nam onze presentatie helemaal op, en wist de drie uur durende show in te korten, zodat het op één LP paste. Achteraf wenste ik, dat het een dubbel-LP zou zijn geweest, maar goed, ik mocht het verhaal op de hoes schrijven. Volgens mij is deze LP, net als sommige andere uitgaven in de EBM (Eubie Blake Music) serie uitgebracht op CD.

Eubie Blake was een echte heer, een gentleman, een gentle man, een heer van stand. Een geweldig talent. Marion, zijn vrouw, was een schat en ik mis ze allebei nog steeds. Ik wil die herinneringen aan hen en aan al die andere mensen, die ik eerder genoemd heb, vastleggen voordat ik straks zelf bij de honderdjarige op bezoek mag. Wens me succes !!

Eddie Cantor, a poor margin-called actor as he describes himself, refering to the fact that he lost most of his money due to the stock market crash of 1929, in a Hit of the week advertisement in the Afro-American - Baltimore of the 10th of May 1930. Eddie Cantor was also responsable for the song Cheer Up sung on the only Durium De Luxe Record release.

I thought Flo Ziegfeld was handling me a great big Hello. He came back all steamed up after hearing this new record. For 15¢ .... a full-size record .... high priced orchestras ... big musical Hits! I had to laugh. I hadn't had a good laugh since before I was caught short in the market. For 15 ¢? For 25¢ you couldn't buy even a piccolo solo! But then I heard the record played, right along side a 75 ¢ one. That's when I became interested in the business.
I listened to a mix of these Hit-of-the-Weeks records and if there's any difference between them and the kind I plunk down 75 ¢ for, I must be wearing our muffs

These records are one-sided. You can buy the music you really want without plunking down good dough for a dud on the reverse side. And they don't break ! I took one home. I sat on it. I hit it with a hammer. We used it as a cocktail tray. Even my pre-war ( that is "pre" the next war) stuff couldn't sour it. And then the cook fried an egg on it. It played just the same.There's not a break in a boxfull!

They are made of Durium, folks, and that's the whole secret. Durium was invented by Dr. H. T. Beans, professor of chemistry at Columbia University. He told me the chemical name and it made me dizzy, but, anyhow, the stuff looks something like brown patent leather. With the old type of record, a man and a machine can turn out 700 a day. With Durium, a man and a machine can turn out 70,000. Now your money can buy music instead of expensive material. That's why Hit-of-the-Week records can sell for 15 ¢.

But that's not all. There are more reasons why this is the biggest thing that ever hit the phonograph business. Only one record will be made each week and that will be a hit that has proved itself on the stage, and over the radio, and over the dance floor.

Flo Ziegfeld, Vincent Lopez and I will set as a music jury to pick out the most popular pieces of music every week. Then it will be recorded by one of the best orchestras that money can hire. Eddie Cantor, een armlastig acteur zoals hij zichzelf omschrijft, vanwege het feit dat hij even tevoor zijn hele vermogen tijdens de beurscrash van 1929 had zien wegsmelten, in een Hit of the Week advertentie, aan het woord in de Afro-American - Baltimore van 10 mei 1930. Hij zong voor Durium het nummer Cheer Up op de bijzondere Durium De Luxe uitgave.

Ik dacht dat Flo Ziegfeld me bij de neus nam. Hij was helemaal opgewonden toen hij die nieuwe plaat gehoord had .... voor 15 cent .... een hele plaat ..... met eerste klas musici ..... grote hits. Ik moest erg lachen. Ik had al lang niet meer zo gelachen voordat ik begreep waar hij het over had. Voor 15 cent? Voor een kwartje heb je nog niet eens een piccolo solo!. Maar toen ik de plaat had horen spelen, meteen na één van 75 cent, toen snapte ik zijn opwinding ..... toen begreep ik pas waar hij het over had ! Ik luisterde naar een aantal van deze zgn. Hit-of-the-Week platen en mocht er verschil zijn met één van die platen die ik voor 75 cent had gekocht - dan had ik het niet kunnen zeggen.

Deze platen zijn maar aan één kant bespeelbaar. Je kunt deze platen dus kopen zonder opgescheept te worden met de achterkant. En ze breken niet. Ik heb er één mee naar huis genomen en ben er op gaan zitten. Ik heb er met een hamer op geslagen en als dienblad gebruikt. Zelfs dat bocht dat ze tegenwoordig schenken, beschadigde het oppervlak niet. Ik heb er zelfs een ei op gebakken: het maakte allemaal niets uit: de plaat klonk nog net zo als daarvoor. Zelfs in een doos vol platen kan er geen één beschadigen.

Ze zijn gemaakt van Durium, mensen, en dat is het hele geheim. Durium is uitgevonden door een professor in de scheikunde aan de Universiteit van Columbia, Dr. H. T. Beans. Hij heeft me de chemische samenstelling verteld van het spul en ik werd er helemaal duizelig van, hoe dan ook, het lijkt op een soort kunstleer. Van de ouderwetse plaat, zal ik maar zeggen, kan één man achter een machine 700 exemplaren persen op een dag; met Durium maakt diezelfde man achter zijn machine met gemak zo'n 70.000 platen. Je geeft je goeie geld dus niet uit voor duur materiaal en arbeid; daarom kan zo'n Durium plaat zo goedkoop zijn en voor 15 cent verkocht worden. Maar dat is nog niet alles.... Er zijn nog meer redenen waarom deze plaat zo'n succes is in de platenbusiness. Er wordt maar één plaat in de week uitgebracht, maar dat is dan ook altijd een "hit", die zichzelf al lang bewezen heeft op het podium, op de radio of op de dansvloer.

Flo Ziegfeld, Vincent Lopez en ik vormen samen een muziekjury met als opdracht elke week de meest populaire nummers te selecteren. Die worden dan op de plaat gezet door de beste orkesten die voor geld te koop zijn. Ieder plaat is gewoon een succes; geen flops meer. Daarom ook kun je, zonder problemen, de plaat kopen zonder dat je hem tevoren beluisterd hebt. Nooit een kat-in-de-zak dus; elke plaat is gewoon een wow, een hit !! Dus kom op mensen, aan de slag en geef deze arme eenvoudige acteur even rust. Je kunt deze platen kopen bij ELKE KRANTENKIOSK net zo makkelijk als of je je krantje haalt. Ga jouw exemplaar vandaag nog halen. Deze week de grote hit "Lazy Loui'siana Moon" gespeeld door Jan Garber en zijn orkest.

Durium De Luxe

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) Archeophone Records has published the third double-CD in its series The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings.
The first and second double-CDs were released a few years ago and when the last and fourth double-CD will be published all Durium records in the Hit of the Week series will be reissued chronologically - an unique treasure in the history of sound recording. Some weeks ago I published a first contribution about this third double CD. I told about some novelties like the new 5-minutes recordings , twice the playing time of the average record and about the new numbering system that could be read as a kind of sell-by date. This time I love to tell you about an outsider in the weekly Hit of the week records series, the only released DURIUM DE LUXE record, not a regular weeky release, with its colourful label and cover.

This record was released as DURIUM DE LUXE K 6 late October 1931 and could be obtained for twenty-five cents. The tune Cheer Up is sung by Eddie Cantor, who was, together with Florenz Ziegfeld and Vincent Lopez one of the music jury, that selected the Hit-of-the-hour for the Hit of the week ( as stated on the first promo record, Tip Toe Thru The Tulips ( Hit of the week 1019) (volume 1 CD 1 track 2)

The tune is one of the so-called typically anti-Depression songs, that wants to put the bad times into another perspective: Cheer Up, ... better times are here. Sunny smilers we must be, the optimist asserts, Let's hang the fat-head to a tree! Cheer up, smile, nertz. Other typical anti-depression tunes are Cheerful Little Earfull (Volume 2 CD one track 14), Let's Have Another Cup O'Coffee and Sing A New Song, which will be published later in the 4th volume. The label is compleet different from the rather boring common Hit of the week labels. Archeophone used the lay-out for the print on its first CD. A nice detail !!

I found a film fragment where you can see and hear this record to be played, with comments from the owner. If you look carefully you can also see another novelty, the so-called visible interval between the two tunes. Well, we are used to this nowadays, because it was used on all 33rpm recordings later. This DURIUM DE LUXE contains a vocal and an instrumental version of this tune, as the maker of the movie volunteers halfway the record..

Archeophone Records heeft de derde dubbel-cd uitgebracht in haar serie The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings. De eerste en tweede dubbel-cd verschenen een paar jaar geleden en zodra de vierde set is uitgebracht dan zullen alle Hit of the week platen digitaal bewaard zijn; een uniek project in de geschiedenis van de geluidsopnamen. Ik vertelde reeds in een eerdere Keep swinging weblog over een paar nieuwigheden, die door Durium gelanceerd werden, zoals 5-minuten plaat, twice the playing time of the average record ( = 5 minuten-plaat, tweemaal de speelduur van een gemiddelde plaat) en het vernieuwde nummeringsysteem, waardoor de koper de "houdbaarheidsdatum" kon aflezen. Deze keer vertel ik iets meer over een buitenbeentje in de toch wel saai uitziende Hit of the week platen, de enige uitgave van de DURIUM DE LUXE plaat, met zijn unieke kleurrijke label.

Deze plaat werd uitgebracht als DURIUM DE LUXE K 6 eind oktober 1931 en kon gekocht worden voor 25 dollarcent. Het nummer Cheer Up werd gezongen door Eddie Cantor, die, samen met Florenz Ziegfeld en Vincent Lopez hoorde bij de zgn. music jury, die, volgens de eerste promotieplaat Tip Toe Thru The Tulips ( vol. 1 CD 1 track 2) select the Hit-of-the-hour for the Hit of the week (= de muziekjury, die, de Hits van de dag selecteerden voor de Hits van de week).

Het nummer is zo'n typisch Anti-Depressielied, waarin de moeilijke economische toestand van het land gerelativeerd wordt en de mensen hoop putten voor de toekomst: Cheer Up, ... better times are here. sunny smilers we must be, the optimist asserts, Let's hang the fat-head to a tree! Cheer up, Smile, Nertz. ( Kop op, de betere tijden komen er aan, we moeten lachen, de optimisten komen voor zichzelf op, laten we die speknekken ophangen Kop op, Lachen !!). Andere voorbeelden van dit soort nummers zijn ook uitgebracht op Hit of the week, zoals Cheerful Little Earfull( vol. 2 CD 1 nummer 14), Let's Have Another Cup O'Coffee en Sing A New Song, die later in volume 4 zullen verschijnen. Het label en de hoes zijn beide compleet anders dan de gewone saaie bruine Hit of the week labels en het is grappig om te ontdekken dat Archeophone de eerste CD ook in die kleuren bedrukt heeft; een leuk detail. !!

Ik vond een filmfragment waarin je de plaat kunt zien en horen terwijl hij wordt afgespeeld, voorzien van het commentaar van de eigenaar. Als je goed kijkt zie je ook een andere Durium uitvinding, de zgn. visible interval ( zichtbare overgang) tussen twee nummers. Op deze DURIUM DE LUXE bevindt zich namelijk een vocale en een instrumentale versie van Cheer Up, zoals de eigenaar van de plaat halverwege nog eens ongevraagd uitlegt. De zichtbare overgang is later gemeengoed geworden op LPs. Genieten maar !!
