Harry's Mystery Band
This series of CDs dedicated to the Metronome records label and the Swedish Jazz History of the 1950s, the Legendary Years, were only sold in one recordshop I visit a few times a year and some weeks ago I bought their last copy. No, I don't have the complete series, what a pity, as this is really great stuff. The last copy I bought was volume one, featuring Harry Arnold.
Egil Johansen, Bengt Hallberg and Bjarne Nerem (Cd-booklet)
A lot of jazz fans have never heard about Harry Arnold, I guess - he is an overlooked and now obscure figure in jazz. Well I can tell you that he led a great swinging big band in the 1950s. Harry was born in Halsingborg ( Sweden) in 1920 and studied clarinet and became fully self-taught in making arrangements. In the early 1940s, while Europe was suffering from the German occupation he led his own band in Malmo (Sweden). In the 1950s he became arranger and tenor player in the band of Thor Ehrling and founded his Swedish Radio Studio Orchestra in the mid 1950s. This Radiobandet, as they say in Swedish, is to be heard on this compilation.
The CD opens with Stand By ( This Is Harry), a tune that would become the signature tune of the band, and I wondered why I never had heard this incredibly tight, talented and swinging big band before. This band, founded early 1956, were in October of that same year on the air for the very first time and it became so popular in Sweden that it got a fortnight series of programs for the next ten years. Their first LP was recorded in 1957 and was titled This is Harry and the Mystery Band for the Jazztone label, to be released in Sweden and the US. In the US, critics were knocked out by what they heard and George Simon, then a well known jazz critic, wrote about it: Its brilliant ensembles, its abundance of exciting modern soloists, its biting, swinging beat, and it's superb polish - all these things really thrilled us. If you have a chance to listen to this CD, I'm sure you wil be as astonished and curious about the members of this great band: well I could give it to you and you'll learn that some of them became famous members of the Swedish jazz scene. Here's the line up of the 1957 Swedish Radio Studio Orchestra ( or Harry's Mystery Band ):Steven Eriksson, Weine Renliden, Bengt-Arne Wallin, Arnold Johansson ( trumpet section) - Åke Persson, Andreas Skjold, George Vernon, Gordon Ohlson ( trombone section) - Arne Domnerus, Rolf Lindell, Cartl-Henrik Norin, Bjarne Nerem, Lennart Jansson ( reed section ) Bengt Hallberg, Simon Brehm, Egil Johansen ( rhythm section ). Harry Arnold director and arranger)
The second part of the CD contains recordings featuring a young Quincy Jones directing this band featuring some ( visiting) US musicians like Benny Bailey, Coleman Hawkins and Lucky Thompson.
This is a hell of a swinging band

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Thanks, Hans, for pointing to this great Swede, you're right Harry Arnold was a great arranger with the Swedish Radio big band - I'll try finding some of the live-shots that have been issued. Some of this stuff is available here, I think.
