Middelburg Jazz for Modernists

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Within a few weeks Middelburg will be the centre of jazz in Zeeland, the province in the southwestern part of The Netherlands with its second International Jazz Festival Middelburg, sceduled from the 9th up to the 12th of May 2008 in the centre of Middelburg
There has been a jazz festival in Middelburg for years, with bands that played in the more traditional jazz styles, but the festival attendance was declining and the bands, walking through the streets of the city, gave the festival and the jazz music a rather out-of-date impression being a kind of music that went out long ago. The organisation of the International Jazz Festival wants to show the people of Zeeland, that jazz is still alive and has more aspects then straw heads alone. It is a pleasure to learn that the festival concentrates now on the contemporaty jazz styles too, with musicians that are popular to a growing audience. Today I love to introduce you to some of the great names in modern jazz that will perform in the innercourt of the abbey - tomorrow I wil introduce you to the more classic jazz bands.
On Saturday evening, the 10th of May 2008 one can enjoy two concerts at the innercourt of the abbey: The first one is with Bobby Previte's New Bumb, a talked-about band featuring the New York drummer Bobby Previte as leader. He is in Europe for a ten-days-tour with his quartet that ends in Middelburg. The members of the New Bumb are Ellery Eskelin on tenor saxophone, Bill Ware on vibraphone, Brad Jones on bass and Bobby Previte on drums. The legendary Archie Shepp will be the second one for that evening that will perform on the cozy innercourt of the abbey. This man is really a legend in jazz, who launched the free jazz, but was inspired in his music by great saxophone players like Coleman Hawkins. He is known for his fight for equal rights for the blacks, as presented by Malcolm X. He will visit Middelburg with his quintet, featuring himself on the tenor saxophone, Frank Lacy on trombone, Tom McClung at the piano, Wayne Dockery on bass and Steven McCraven on drums. Frank Lacy was part of Roy Hargrove's Crisol Band who visited Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, ten years ago ( November 1997).

There are more great names: What to think about our own Eric Vloeimans with his Gatecrash Quartet, that will bring electronic jazz, or Maceo Parker, the King of Funk, who will close the festival on Monday or the popular E.S.T., the Esbjörn Svensson Trio that will perform on Sunday evening. These musicians, from the far North, are one of the most renewing groups in jazz nowadays and worth to plan a visit. You can find more info at their website.

NOBLE SISSLE BAND:
A few weeks ago I introduced you to a PATHE short by the
Noble Sissle Band from ca. 1930. I asked for the personel and thanks to Mark Cantor, one of worlds most skilled jazz film archivist I received his point of view on the band members:
Hi there, Hans. Scott W. of Mosaic forwarded your query about the Noble Sissle band, and it has taken me a while to respond. ...... In any case, here are my thoughts about the Noble Sissle band in the superlative Pathe short: Noble Sissle, vocal and leader; trumpets, left-to-right; probably Tommy Ladnier, Arthur Briggs; possibly Billy Burns, trombone; probably Rudy Jackson, clarinet and tenor sax, seated at center of the band; Jack Carter, drums and vocal; remaining personnel unknown, probably very similar from recording personnel of the period; Ralph Duquesne, reeds; Lloyd Pinckney, piano; Frank Ethridge, guitar; Eddie Coles, string bass. How does this sound to you? Mark
Thanks Mark for your respond - I let you know ! - Hans Koert

Hi there, Hans. Scott W. of Mosaic forwarded your query about the Noble Sissle band, and it has taken me a while to respond. ......
- Hans Koert - keepswinging@live,nl

Who is who? Arthur Briggs and Noble Sissle

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Today I love to share with you a film fragment by The Noble Sissle Orchestra, playing Little White Lies as they appeared at London's famed Ciro's club in 1930. It is suggested that Arthur Briggs, trumpet player, could be on this clip.

Arthur Briggs in the Savoy's Syncops Band ( early 1920s)

You should know that Arthur Briggs, born in 1899 ( He would have celebrated his 109th birthday this week) came to London for the very first time in 1919 with the band of Will Marion Cook. He became one of the first black musicians that stayed in Europe. At the period this film was made, Arthur Briggs played now and then with Noble Sissle's Orchestra, also labeled as Noble Sissle and his Sizzling Syncopators. Buck Clayton (1911-1991) trumpet

This film contains a hot version of Little White Lies, composed by Walter Donaldson, popularized by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians and also recorded by Vincent Lopez as a Hit of the week. Halfway the film the band plays the tune Happy Feet, a hit from the 1929 Paul Whiteman's King of Jazz film, the drummer man starts singing and after that the orchestra doubles speed at the end and one of the band members (?) tap dances.

The members of the band could have been, according to records from that period, Tommy Ladnier and Arthur Briggs on trumpet, Billy Burns on trombone, Frank Goudie ( nicknamed "Big Boy" because of his size), Rudy Jackson, Ralph Duquesne or Ramon Usera on reeds, Lloyd Pinckney at the piano, Frank Ethridge on bass, Edga Coles on tuba and Jack Carter on drums who also sings Happy Feet. The director and first vocalist in front of the band is of course Noble Sissle. The dancer remains uncertain. According to a picture I have from Frank Big Boy Goudie together with Oscar Aleman from 1935 the tall saxophone player on the right could be him. Brian Rust gives three other reed players in this band, but only two are left on the film. There is no bass player in the fvilm either.

Frank Big Boy Goudie and Oscar Aleman ( 1935)

Can someone confirm the other members of the band? Are the two trumpet players Tommy Ladnier and Arthur Briggs? I'd suggest that the left trumpet player might be Tommy Ladnier, so the right one could be Arthur Briggs.
I'm sure others will have discuss this filmfragment before, so contact me if you have more info about this really hot fragment.

WHO IS WHO?:
Some months ago I posted a
contribution about a film fragment by Eddie Lang, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. But who are the others. Dick Feingold contacted me and wrote: Hi--I saw your website with the pictures of the old bands, and I really think that the trumpet player in question is not Mickey Bloom. Mickey was my uncle, and although I did not know him at that time in his life, it really does not look like him. He spoke about Manny Klein often, and it could be him, but I never met Manny and so I don't know. Dick Feingold Glen Head, NY USA

Thanks Dick for your suggestions. If you love to see some stills from that film again, visit the contribution ( keepswinging@live.nl)

Arthur Briggs in the Savoy's Syncops Band ( early 1920s)

Het orkest heette toen voluit: Noble Sissle and his Sizzling Syncopators. Buck Clayton (1911 - 1991 ) trompet

Frank Big Boy Goodie and Oscar Aleman ( 1935)

WHO IS WHO?:
Dick Feingold schreef me gisteren en meldde: Hi--I saw your website with the pictures of the old bands, and I really think that the trumpet player in question is not Mickey Bloom. Mickey was my uncle, and although I did not know him at that time in his life, it really does not look like him. He spoke about Manny Klein often, and it could be him, but I never met Manny and so I don't know. Eubie Blake Remembered-3

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
A few weeks ago I made
a contribution about the great album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake. One of the readers who sent me his remembrances of Eubie Blake ( 1883-1983) was Lee Munsick. His reaction was very interesting and I asked him to publish his remembrances in my daily Keep Swinging web log. You can find his first contribution here. His second one was posted a few days later, and his final one is published today.

Back in New Jersey, every year we at Yesteryear ( in the Morris County Cultural Center outside Morristown, New Jersey), held a benefit show. The first with Max Morath was a week before the opening of the museum in October, but the others were all in late May or early June. I have known Max since the 1960s, when I produced Jaycee benefit shows (Jaycee means: Junior Chambers) in which he was featured, along with other notable performers. The Yesteryear benefits in the 70s became a highlight of the social scene in affluent Morris County. We were blessed with such performers as William Bolcom and Joan Morris (then affianced), Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt (married), repeat demand performances by Morath, and a number of other nostalgic programs, 7 or 8 in total.

The only one which we at Yesteryear actually produced ourselves, featured Eubie Blake. It wasn't until just before I introduced Eubie's performance that I learned it, but ours was World Premiere of Eubie's Rhapsody in Ragtime! It also featured screening a very early 1920s Lee de Forest Phonofilm (pioneer optical sound on the film) with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, a very young Eddie Cantor, and the hugely popular DeWolf Hopper reciting his perennial favorite, "Casey at the Bat".

Eubie Blake - Noble Sissle in the 1923 Lee de Forest Phonofilm

Eddie Cantor in the 1923 Lee de Forest Phonofilm

We also played an Aeolian piano roll cut by Eubie Blake, while he told us the intriguing story of how it came about. The program book included a copy of the first paycheck made out by Thomas A. Edison to Eubie Blake for his first phonograph cylinder, a sound recording which we also played. A long program, it was a phenomenal evening which anyone present was sure to remember for years to come.

Carl Seltzer managed Eubie Blake and produced the wonderful series of Eubie Blake Music LPs. Carl recorded our presentation, edited down the nearly 3-hourshow, and put it out in LP form. I wished it could have been 2 LPs for more of the program, but I had the pleasure of writing the liner notes. I believe that it and several other former EBM issues are still available in CD form.
Eubie Blake was a wonderful gentleman. And gentle man. A phenomenal talent. Marion, his wife, was a delight, and I miss them both. I shall treasure these and other memories with them and the many other folk I have mentioned as well as others, until I reach that Centennial figure myself. Wish me luck!

This concludes the last part of Lee Munsick's remembrances. Thanks Lee !! If you love to contact Lee I'll forward your commends: keepswinging@live.nl

Een paar weken geleden plaatste ik
een bijdrage over het schitterende album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake.

Elk jaar organiseerden we in New Jersey in ons Yesteryears museum ( in het Morris County Cultural Center buiten Morristown, New Jersey) een benefietavond.

Wens me succes !!

Eubie Blake

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
In 1973 a double LP was released by Eubie Blake, born in 1883, who composed his first rag before the turn of the century, who recorded for the very first time in 1917 on a vertical cut Pathe 78rpm record. Vertical cut means that the sound in the groove is stored vertically as hills and dales. Maybe a nice subject for a coming blog. This album was released due to the fact that Eubie Blake celebrated his 86th birthday.
Born in 1883, he started his career in 1899 when he wrote his first tune, titled Sounds of Africa, better known as The Charleston Rag. He became a ragtime piano player and vaudeville artist in Broadway Shows during the 1920s with vocalist / crooner Noble Sissle. A very early, experimental sound film exists and I found a fragment of this 1923 (!) film ( the first sound films are from the late 1920s). I love to share this with you:

He became known in productions like Shuffle Along and Revue Negre, also featuring Josephine Baker. The most important days of his career were the 1920s. Later his popularity faded, until he was rediscovered in the early 1970s. He started a second career as one of the last survived ragtime legends.
This album, titled The Eighty-Six Years Of Eubie Blake was made during this period and he talks and plays the old tunes. Although the cover of the double-lp suggests that it contains historical recordings; the tunes were made in the 1970s. It is really great to learn that this man, who went through all ragtime and jazz styles of the XXth Century, is still a great entertainer. This CBS 2LP album ( S 68250 ) is one of those items I couldn't afford when I was a teenager. I copied the music on my reel-to-reel Akai taperecorder and now, when I have the original LPs I really enjoy the liner notes with the history of the early carreer of Eubie Blake.
I love to share with you two fragments of Eubie Blake at the piano, playing ragtimes as if he is still a young adult. a great entertainer. Eubie blake passed away in February 1983 100 years ( and five days) old. Enjoy the fragments:
