Keep (it) Swinging: Sottomarini e Pattini

Jazz is based on improvising. Improvising means that you create the music, while performing. If you're playing solo you're complete free in creating the music, but if you're in a group you'll have to respond to the others, unless you play complete free improvised music. I think that the quintet is one of the most regular forms in the new post war jazz styles. The trio is another organisation unit, which often exists one solo instrument and two rhythm accompanists. One of the most pure jazz forms is the duo I guess, two musicians, who play on an equal merit, so not a vocalist accompanied by a piano player. I remember the Duo Special concert at the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival (= Traditional Jazz Festivals) in Breda as highlights in jazz improvising.

A duo on stage can be very entertaining, but if you make a record you have to be excellent to keep the attention of the listeners. Two Italian jazz musicians did do that last weekend: Maurizio Aliffi and Marco Bianchi. I had found their album Sottomarini e Pattini released in 2006 on a Reeal CD ( BA 110 ).
I found a fragment where you can listen to Marco Bianchi playing Crazy Rhythm on his vibraphone.

Maurizio Aliffi plays the guitars and Marco Bianchi is a vibraphone player. Maurizio Aliffi is an Italian guitar player and composer who made several recordings with Francesco D'Auria, like E Tre Quarti Stanno Sotto and Cercando la Tigre and also in smaller gorups, like this duo-performance with Marco Bianchi and a trio with Mark Belcastro and Simone Mauri. He is active in stage productions, where he composes the music. He is also a teacher in guitar and harmony.

Marco Bianchi played the organ as a kid, changed to the piano and joined the Giuseppe Verdi School of Music in Milan (Italy), where he studied the classics. Now he plays the vibraphone. He is active in a lot of bands, like his own Everest, which released three albums and with the band Soggetti a Rischio. I found another duo ( this time with marimba player Matteo Mascetti ) I love to share with you: Ero in Bonafede:

This album, Sottomarini E Pattini, contains 12 tracks; the last five belong to a suite: The Rat-Man Suite, partly dedicated to Makoto Ozone, a Japanese jazz piano player and Chick Corea, who needs no further introduction. The music is relaxed, jazz, sometimes a bit esoteric new age influencend, but never woolly. The title of the album was based on a quote by Italian writer and poet Marco Lodoli, who wrote: Il ghiaccio ha chiuso il lago, ma sotto e sopra sottomarini e pattini ( = The ice has closed the lake, but below and above submarines and skaters). I liked the music of these two musicians - jazz improvising on a high level .....

Sorry, but I haven't found a fragment by Maurizio Aliffi playing his guitar.

Jazz is gebasseerd op improvisatie. Improvisatie wil zeggen dat je de muziek bedenkt en maakt op het moment dat je het uitvoert. Als je alleen speelt, solo, ben je helemaal vrij in wat je doet, maar ben je met meer dan zul je rekening met elkaar moeten houden - in ieder geval op elkaar moeten reageren. Het kwintet is, denk ik, de meest gebruikte organisatievorm - twee of drie solo instrumenten en minimaal twee in de ritmesectie. Eén van de meest pure vorm is het duo - twee evenwaardige instrumenten, die samen musiceren. Ik doel hier dus niet op bijvoorbeeld een zanger met een begeleidend instrument. Ik denk aan het Duo Special onderdeel in het Oudestijl Jazz Festival in Breda - een spannend en druk onderdeel van het festival - een hoogtepunt in improvseren.

Een duo op het toneel kan spannend zijn, maar ook heel saai ( als het niet klikt), maar vastgelegd op een plaat moet je van goede huize komen om de aandacht van de luisteraar vast te houden. Twee Italiaanse jazzmuzikanten kunnen dat: Maurizio Aliffi en Marco Bianchi. Ik vond hun album Sottomarini e Pattini uitgebracht in 2006 op een Reeal CD ( BA 110 ).
Ik vond een filmfragment waarop je Marco Bianchi op vibrafoon kunt horen met het nummer Crazy Rhythm:

Maurizio Aliffi speelt gitaar en Marco Bianchi is een vibrafonist. Maurizio Aliffi is behalve gitarist voornamelijk componist, die verschillende platen gemaakt heeft met Francesco D'Auria, zoals E Tre Quarti Stanno Sotto en Cercando La Tigre. Hij maakte ook platen in kleinere groepen als in een duet met Marco Bianchi ( een voorbeeld ligt hier voor me) en in een trio met Mark Belcastro en Simone Mauri. Hij is actief in theaterproducties waarvoor hij de muziek componeert. Hij doceert ook gitaar en harmonieleer.

Verder is hij te horen in de band Soggetti a Rischio. Ik vond nog een fragment, ook in de duo-vorm, deze keer met marimbaspeler Matteo Mascetti: Ero in Bonafede:

De plaat, Sottomarini E Pattini, bevat 12 nummers, waarvan de laatste vijf onderdelen zijn van een suite: The Rat-Man Suite, gedeeltelijk opgedragen aan de Japanse pianist Makoto Ozone en de bekende jazztoetsenist Chick Corea. De muziek op de plaat is jazz, ontspannen kabbelende, haast esoterische new agemuziek, maar dan nooit met zo'n geitenwollensokkenonderbuikgevoel ( 3x de woordwaarde). De titel van het album is gebasseerd op een uitspraak van een Italiaanse schrijver en dichter, Marco Lodoli, die gechreven heeft: Il ghiaccio ha chiuso il lago, ma sotto e sopra sottomarini e pattini ( = Het ijs heeft het meer afgesloten, maar eronder zijn de onderzeeërs en erboven de schaatsers). Ik heb genoten van deze plaat - jazzimprovisatie op hoog niveau !

Ik wil eindigen met nog een fragment van het zgn. Power Duo, zoals Marco Bianchi en Matteo Mascetti zichzelf noemen: A Night In Tunesia.

Ik kan jullie helaas geen fragment laten zien waarop Maurizio Aliffi speelt.

De Gowers Review in Engeland en de Universiteit van Amsterdam hebben de Europese Unie geadviseerd over het moment waarop bijvoorbeeld muziekopnamen publiek domein worden te verhogen van 50 jaar naar 95 jaar. Dit betekent concreet dat heruitgaven van "nieuwe" traditionele jazz en dansbandplaten door niet commerciële labels onrendabel worden om uit te geven. Je kunt hiertegen protest aan tekenen bij:
