Keep (it) Swinging: Rosenberg Trio

When I go to my work in Middelburg I have to drive each day two times 25 km. by car. I love to play jazz cds while driving and I learned that swinging instrumentals ( no vocals or extensive bass solos) are the best to play. Last week I played The Rosenberg Trio with the 12 years old album Gypsy Swing. It is great music to play while driving, as the music swings, is relaxed and easy accesible.

The Rosenberg Trio was established in the early 1990s and is very popular since that time. The trio features Stochelo and Nous'che Rosenberg, who both play the guitar and Nonnie Rosenberg on bass. Nous'che and Nonnie are brothers; Stochelo is their cousin. They all belong to the Rosenberg family, Sinta. On the album Gypsy Swing they are accompanied by a small jazz orchestra featuring Frits Landesbergen drums/vibes, Eddie Conard percussion, Marcel Serierse drums, Frans-Jan van der Hoeven bass, E.L. Olah violin, Hans Jansen piano/keyboards, Bert Meulendijk guitar, Wim Both trumpet, Philip Kolb tenor and alto sax, Marc Godfroid trombone and Cees Schrama piano

In the Rosenberg family the music of Django Reinhardt was very popular and while still kids, they heard and played the so-called hot club music. The father of Nous'che and Nonnie, Sani Rosenberg played in a band with his brother-in-law Wasso Grünzholz, Hans Meelen and Storo Berger. Later the members of the Rosenberg family played in the group Manouche. In that band the young Rosenberg's Nous'che and Stochelo and another young guy Rino van Hooydonk played beside some skilled adult players. In 1980 these three kids won a a children TV-contest, of course without the adult band members; which made the kids popular.
I found a documentary, titled Gevoelige Snaren which tells the story of the Rosenberg Trio. Although it is in Dutch you may enjoy the music fragments. This is only the first part of that documentary, if you like you can find the second one searching on the internet.

It is remarkable if you learn how many CDs and DVDs these men released, and their list of scedulded performances makes other serious jazzmusicians jealous. It shows how immense popular they are in this part of the world. Hot Club Swing, the music as played by Django Reinhardt has still a large amount of fans, as the music swings and is easy accessible. For those fans this music is the real jazz, the musical heritage of Django ..........

The Dutch roots band Champagne Charlie was asked to make a new album about this award and will present it on that day. Als ik naar mijn werk in Middelburg ga, moet ik elke dag zo'n twee keer 25 km in de auto zitten. Ik hou er van om dan een jazz cd op te zetten en ik heb ontdekt dat ze niet allemaal even geschikt zijn. Het beste zijn swingende, instrumentale nummers ( geen zang dus, maar ook geen lange bas solo's). Afgelopen week draaide ik weer eens het Rosenberg Trio met hun 12 jaar oude album Gypsy Swing. Prachtige muziek, swingend, ontspannen en gemakkelijk toegankelijk; ideaal om kilometers te maken.

Ik wil graag een fragment laten zien van een optreden van Het Rosenberg Trio dat het nummer Bossa Dorado speelt.

Het Rosenberg Trio werd opgericht begin jaren negentig en is sinds die tijd mateloos populair. Het trio bevat Stochelo en Nous'che Rosenberg, die allebei gitaar spelen en Nonnie Rosenberg op bas. Nous'che en Nonnie zijn broers; Stochelo is hun neef. Ze behoren allen tot de Rosenberg familie, Sinta's. Op hun plaat Gypsy Swing worden ze ook nog eens begeleid door een klein jazzorkest met Frits Landesbergen op slagwerk en vibrafoon, Eddie Conard op percussie, Marcel Serierse slagwerk, Frans-Jan van der Hoeven bas, E.L. Olah viool, Hans Jansen keyboards, Bert Meulendijk gitaar, Wim Both trompet, Philip Kolb tenor- en altsax, Marc Godfroid trombone en Cees Schrama piano.

In de Rosenberg familie was de muziek van Django Reinhardt erg populair en toen de leden van het trio nog klein waren hoorden ze deze zgn. hot club muziek overal in huis. De vader van Nous'che en Nonnie, Sani Rosenberg speelde in een bandje met zijn zwager Wasso Grünzholz, Hans Meelen en Storo Berger. Later kreeg het bandje met de leden van de Rosenberg familie de naam Manouche. In die band begonnen een nog jonge Nous'che en Stochelo en nog een andere jongeman, Rino van Hooydonk hun muzikale carriere, uiteraard aangevuld met een aantal volwassen muzikanten. De drie kinderen wonnen tijdens een kinderfestival voor de Nederlandse televisie de eerste prijs en hun naam was hiermee gevestigd.
Ik vond een fragment van een documentaire, getiteld Gevoelige Snaren waarin het verhaal van het Rosenberg Trio verteld wordt. Dit fragment komt uit het eerste deel; het tweede deel is ook eenvoudig op internet te vinden.

Het is opvallend om te ontdekken hoeveel CDs en DVDs dit trio al op zijn naam heeft staan en de lijst met geplande concerten is lang en voor veel serieuze jazzmusici iets om jaloers op te worden. Deze band is bij het grote publiek geaccepteerd als een erg toegankelijke vorm van de jazz. Dit geldt grosso modo voor alle hot club muziek, de muziek voortgekomen vanuit de nalatenschap van Django Reinardt's Hot Club du France opnamen. Voor veel fans is deze muziek de enige soort jazz die swingt- Django's muzikale nalatenschap.

Ik vind het leuk om te eindigen met nog zo'n swingend nummer; deze keer een klassieker. Het Rosenberg Trio speelt hier het nummer It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing, dat ook als eerste track op de CD Gypsy Swing terug te vinden is. Hans Koert keepswinging@live.nl

Morgen, 24 mei 2008, wordt de Four Freedoms Awards door de koningin uitgereikt in Middelburg. De Nederlandse rootsband Champagne Charlie is gevraagd om een nieuw album te maken rond deze Four Freedoms Awards en die plaat wordt eveneens morgen gepresenteerd. Ik schreef hierover reeds in een eerdere bijdrage, getiteld Champagne Charlie - Roosevelt CD.
