A few days ago I received a message from Aussie P. from Melbourne who wrote me: Dear Sir, Have just discovered your great (!) web page, Here in Melbourne / Australia , we are to see for the first time, The Dutch Forest Jazz Band, Would it be at all possible, to show some of their material on your “ wonderful “ Jazz page soon ?? Thanking you truly, Aussie P., Melbourne Australia.


To be honest .... I'd never heard of this Dutch Forest Jazz Band, but I learned that this band is a well known dixieland band based in the centre of The Netherlands, in Apeldoorn, a city surrounded by the forests of De Veluwe. This band, directed by Ton Bos, was founded in 1977 as the Eagle Town Jazz Band. The members of the band are: Peter Ivan trumpet, Gerrit Brouwer clarinet, Ton Bos trombone and leader of the band, Harald Haverkorn piano, Richard Hanson guitar and banjo, Joan Krukkert bass and Jan Ter Maat drums. The music of the band play is called Dixieland; very swinging music in a style as played by the Eddie Condon band in the 1930s and 1940s with musicians like Wild Bill Davison, Bobby Hacket, Edmond Hall and Jack Teagarden. They performed on several festivals, like the IJssel Jazz Festival in Zutphen, the Philip Morris Dixieland Jazz Festival in Bergen op Zoom, the two-times-a-year reunions of the Doctor Jazz Magazine in Wageningen, and of course, Jazz in the Woods in their hometown Apeldoorn. They won some awards, like a third prize at the VARA radio Dixieland Competition. The Forest Jazz Band toured through the Carribean in 1990.
Isn't it cute that an Australian fan has to point me to a band from our back garden? Of course, the question arises: What is this Dutch Dixieland band doing in Australia? Well, they left the 30th of January 2008 for a three week tour to the oter side of the globe. They have performed in several clubs in Australia, like the Jazz and Hunterclub in New Castle, the Gold Coast City Jazz Club in Southport ( The Jazzclub with The Most On The Coast as they advertise themselves), the Noosa Heads Jazz Club in Noosa, the Dubbo Jazz Club in Dubbo, The Central Coast Jazz Club in Gosbord and the Peninsula Jazz Club in Melbourne. They have also performed for the Nederlandse Club in Australia in the Abel Tasman club in Melbourne. I think that the musicians are nowon their way back to Holland. Up to now I read that a lot of Australian fans of Dixieland music loved the performances. It would be nice to receive some commends and pictures from the other side of the world from their concerts overthere: keepswinging@live.nl

ONE FOR MY BABY (AND ONE FOR THE ROAD) - CLIFFIRD BROWN / MAX ROACH Quintet: Clifford Brown trumpet, Sonny Rollins tenor sax, Richie Powell piano, George Morrow bass and Max Roach drums. Recorded in the Continental Restaurant, Norfolk Virginia on the 18th of June 1956. This is the last quintet concert of both Clifford Brown and Richie Powell before they passed away in a car accident on the 26th of June.

Een paar dagen geleden ontving ik een enthousiast bericht van Aussie P. uit Melbourne, Australië, die me schreef: Dear Sir, Have just discovered your great (!) web page, Here in Melbourne / Australia, we are to see for the first time, The Dutch Forest Jazz Band. Eerlijk gezegd .... had ik nog nooit van deze Nederlandse band gehoord: The Forest Jazz Band, maar ik ontdekte dat ze een bekende dixielandband zijn uit het midden van ons land, gesitueerd in Apeldoorn, omgeven door de bossen van De Veluwe. Deze band is in 1977 opgericht door Ton Bos als de Eagle Town Jazz Band. De leden van de band zijn: Peter Ivan trompet, Gerrit Brouwer klarinet, Ton Bos trombone en leider van de band, Harald Haverkorn piano, Richard Hanson gitaar en banjo, Joan Krukkert bas en Jan Ter Maat slagwerk. De muziek die de band speelt is Dixieland; swingende muziek in de stijl van de band van Eddie Condon. De leden halen hun inspiratie uit de muziek zoals die gespeeld werd door grote namen als Eddie Wild Bill Davison, Bobby Hacket, Edmond Hall en Jack Treagarden. Ze hebben al op heel wat festivals gespeeld, zoals op het IJssel Jazzfestival in Zutphen, het Philip Morris Dixieland Jazz Festival in Bergen op Zoom, tijdens de twee-maal-per-jaar reunies van Doctor Jazz Magazine in Wageningen en natuurlijk op het Jazz in the Woods festival in Apeldoorn zelf. Tijdens de VARA radio Dixieland Competitie behaalden ze ooit een derde prijs. In 1990 maakten ze een tournee door de Carriben. Is dat eigenlijk niet grappig, dat je vanaf de andere kant van de wereld gewezen moet worden op een band uit de achtertuin? Uiteraard roept het bij mij de vraag op: Hoe komt een Nederlandse Dixieland band in Australië terecht? Op 30 januari 2008 vertrokken ze voor een drie weken durende tournee naar de andere kant van de wereld. Ze traden daar op in verschillende clubs, zoals de Hunterclub in New Castle, de Gold Coast City Jazzclub uit Southport ( The Jazzclub with The Most On The Coast )(= De jazzclub die het meeste biedt aan de kust) zoals ze zichzelf etaleren, de Noosa Heads Jazzclub in Noosa, de Dubbo Jazzclub in Dubbo, de Central Coast Jazzclub in Gosbord en tenslotte de Peninsula Jazzclub in Melbourne. Verder stond er een optreden gepland voor de Nederlandse club in Melbourne ( Abel Tasman Club). Ik denk dat op dit moment de band weer op de terugweg is naar Nederland. Feit is, dat uit de verhalen die ik kreeg uit Australië de Dixieland fans genoten hebben van de concerten en het zou leuk zijn om vanuit Australië daar iets over te kunnen laten lezen of zien: keepswinging@live.nl
