Johnny Varro

Some months ago I found a copy of a CD made by a great piano player, but few people on this side of the pond might have heard of: Johnny Varro. The album is called Johnny Varro Solo: The Two Of Us and was released by Arbors Records (ARCD 19292)
Johnny Varro is known in the traditional jazz scene for his swing piano performances and recordings. I found out he played the piano at the tribute album to Davie Tough, made by the Eddie Metz Gang and a tribute album dedicated to Eddie Condon's music by the Allan Vaché Swingtet, and in the Tom Saunders' Wild Bill Davison Band all recordings released by Nagel Heyer available in my collection. These three album mentioned above tell a lot about his carreer. Born in 1930 in Brooklyn NY (USA) Johnny Varro learned to play the piano at the age of ten and started at jam sessions held by Jack Crystal at the Lower East side, where he came into contact with some great musicians like Willie The Lion Smith, Big Sid Catlett and Joe Sullivan. He strated his professional career early 1950s in the band of Bobby Hackett. He toured with that band along the east coast. During the 1950s he played with great names like Phil Napoleon, Pee Wee Erwin and Eddie Condon; all legendary names in traditonal jazz. In Condon's band Johnny Varro met a lot of great swing musicians Buck Clayton, Wild Bill Davison, "Pee Wee" Russell, George Wettling, Yank Lawson, Peanuts Hucko and others.

Een paar maanden geleden liep ik tegen een CD op van een verrassend goede pianist, waarvan, denk ik, maar weinig mensen aan deze kant van de Grote Plas gehoord hebben: Johnny Varro. De plaat is getiteld Johnny Varro Solo: The Two Of Us en werd uitgebracht door Arbors Records (ARCD 19292)
Johnny Varro is vooral bekend in de traditionele jazz om zijn swinguitvoeringen op piano bij concerten en op platen. Zo vond ik hem als pianist terug op verschillende Nagel Heyer platen, zoals het tribute-album ter ere van de muziek van drummer Davie Tough, gemaakt door de Eddie Metz Gang en het album gewijd aan de muzikale nalatenschap van Eddie Condon gespeeld door het Allan Vaché Swingtet, en de CD van Tom Saunders' Wild Bill Davison Band; eigenlijk geven deze drie CDs een mooie afspiegeling van zijn carriere, aangezien ze gewijd zijn aan musici, waarmee Johnny Varro veel gespeeld heeft. Johnny Varro werd geboren in 1930 in Brooklyn NY (USA). Hij ging professioneel spelen begin jaren vijftig in de band van Bobby Hackett, waarmee hij langs de oostkust toerde. Tijdens de jaren vijftig speelde hij met musici als Phil Napoleon, Pee Wee Erwin en Eddie Condon; nu allemaal legendarische namen in de traditonele jazz. In de band van Condon vond Johnny Varro een heleboel grote swingmuzikanten naast zich, zoals Buck Clayton, Wild Bill Davison, "Pee Wee" Russell, George Wettling, Yank Lawson, Peanuts Hucko en nog veel meer.

In de jaren zestig kwam hij bij de Dukes of Dixieland. Weer later, in de jaren zeventig en tachtig had hij successen met zijn eigen groep, de zgn. Swing 7, een groep musici, die zich toelegde op de swingmuziek uit de school van Eddie Condon, Jess Stacy en Teddy Wilson, alle musici, die Johnny Varro sterk beinvloed hebben. De plaat die ik vond: Johnny Varro - The Two Of Us is een soloplaat. Het bevat 20 nummers, meest uit het zgn. American Songbook, zoals Lullaby of Birdland, I Could Write a Book, de titelsong The Two Of Us, Lullaby of the Leaves en Jelly Roll Morton's The Pearl. Er staan ook twee medley's op met muziek van de Beatles en Michel Legrand.
Als je van de muziek van Teddy Wilson houdt ( ik ben elke keer weer aangenaam verrast als ik de CD Teddy Wilson: Blues For Fats Waller opzet ( Black Lion BLCD 760131)), dan zul je zeker een exemplaar van deze CD willen hebben. De CD is uitgebracht in de Arbors Piano Series, volume 13. Ik vond een fragment, hoewel wat matig van beeldkwaliteit, waarin je Johnny Varro op piano kunt horen in One Morning In May, hoewel niet solo, maar begeleid door twee kopstukken uit de swing: Milt Hinton op bas en Jake Hanna op slagwerk. (1995). Geniet er van!

Johnny Varro in 1957 In the mid 1960s he became a member of the Dukes of Dixieland. Duriing 1970s and 1980s he played with the succesfull group Swing 7, musicians that wanted to play in the swing style of musicians like Eddie Condon, Jess Stacy and Teddy Wilson, musicians that influenced his piano playing. This record I found, Johnny Varro - The Two Of Us is a solo piano record. It contains 20 tracks from the so-called American Songbook, like Lullaby of Birdland, I Could Write a Book, the title tune The Two Of Us, Lullaby of the Leaves and Jelly Roll Morton's The Pearl. It also contains medleys of Beatles-tunes and music of Michel Legrand.
If you're impressed by the swing piano style of musicians like Teddy Wilson ( each time I play myself the CD Teddy Wilson: Blues For Fats Waller I'm really surprised) you'll love to have a copy of this great Arbors recordings, released in the so-called Arbors Piano series.
I found a fragment where you can hear Johnny Varro play the piano in the tune One Morning In May, although this time in a trio featuring the great swing masters Milt Hinton on bass and Jake Hanna on drums (1995). You'll like it!

I like the playing of Johnny Varro, a great piano player who actually can swing! Thanks for pointing to the solo issue cd, I'd go for it, too.
