Super Bass

Enrique V. from Argentina bombards me with great jazz links. Yesterday he sent me a link of a concert with three skilled bass players, the late Ray Brown, John Clayton and Christian McBride.
I do have a record of this same group, titled Super Bass: Ray Brown - John Clayton - Christian McBride Live At The Sculler's Jazz Club Boston, October 17-18, 1996. The film fragment is not from this Boston concert, but from a German concert in Cologne / Köln in 1997, probably made during the same tour, titled: Super Bass.
When two skilled musicians, let's say two piano players are performing together on stage on two grand piano's (We have had in The Netherlands the Twee Gevleugelde Vrienden) (A vleugel is the Dutch word for a grand-piano), playing together can be very dangerous: the music could easily bogged down to a hodge podge of sounds. The same dangers lurks with three basses, playing together.
The double bass is not a real solo instrument; bass players lay the foundation of a tune with their bass tones and although in each concert the bass player gets a chance to show his skills; he normally has a rather anonymous place in the band. These three bass men belong to the best there is ( was, as Ray Brown passed away in 2002). This concert in Cologne / Köln, like the CD, never degenerates into a hodgepodge of dark sound. I heard John Clayton live at a concert with the Monty Alexander Trio a year ago and he is really great; Christian McBride is still on my wish list.
During this concert these three men show that they are in control of their instruments. Enjoy it.

Enrique V. uit Argentinië bestookt me met mailtjes vol schitterende jazzlinken. Gisteren stuurde hij me een link van een concert met drie ervaren bassisten, te weten Ray Brown, die een paar jaar geleden overleed, John Clayton en Christian McBride.
Ik heb een CD opname van deze drie mensen, getiteld Super Bass: Ray Brown - John Clayton - Christian McBride Live At The Sculler's Jazz Club in Boston in October 1996. Het filmfragment is niet van dat concert, maar van een optreden in Keulen in 1977, klaarblijkelijk uit dezelfde tournee, getiteld Super Bass.
Als twee ervaren muzikanten, die hetzelfde instrument bespelen, samen op het podium staan, krijg ik altijd argwaan. Twee pianisten, die tegelijkertijd op twee vleugels spelen ( in Nederland werden we tien jaar geleden verblijd met de Twee Gevleugelde Vrienden ) veroorzaken al snel een ratjetoe aan pianoklanken, als een ondoorzichtige brij. Datzelfde gevaar ligt uiteraard op de loer bij drie bassisten, die samen op het podium staan.
De contrabas is niet een echt soloinstrument; bassisten leggen de basis met hun basnoten tijdens het concert en hoewel elke bassist tijdens een optreden wel een moment krijgt waarbij alle aandacht op hem gevestigd wordt, blijft hij meestal verborgen in de anonimiteit. Deze drie bassisten hebben daar geen last meer van; ze hoorden tot het beste wat er voorhanden was; hoorden, aangezien Ray Brown, zoals al eerder opgemerkt, in 2002 overleed. Zelf hoorde ik John Clayton tijdens een liveconcert met het Monty Alexander Trio een jaar geleden in Porgy en Bess Jazzclub in Terneuzen. Christian McBride staat nog steeds op mijn verlanglijstje.
