Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
The Taj Mahal, The Mona Lisa and The Keith Jarrett Köln Concert have one thing in common: they are masterpieces in fine art - of the highest level. Well, I saw the Taj Mahal several times and it's true: it's great. I jumped the queue in The Louvre in Paris and was a bit disappointed when I saw miss Lisa for the very first time. I had to revisit her several times before I learned about her dazzling beauty. Well, the Köln Concert of Keith Jarrrett is something in between. It is like a good bottle of wine - you have to play it several times before you can estimate the value of it. A few weeks ago I found the 2LP Keith Jarrett The Köln Concert (ECM 1064/1065 ST) in a secondhandshop and of course I bought it. The cover is a bit torn, but the records are in good condition. The first time I played it, it couldn't really fascinate me - it was as if the notes went over my head. The music is not very accessible for the very first time, so it needed some replays. It could be part of a TV quiz: What musician started his career as a piano solist in Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians and appeared on Paul Whiteman's television show? I think but few candidates would answer: Keith Jarrett. Born in 1945 he started to study the piano at the age of three and played professionally when he was still a kid. At the age of seven he played already concerts. When he was in his teens he toured with the Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians for a year. From this period dates the appearance in Whiteman's TV show. In the early 1960s he studied music at the Berklee College of Music and started his own trio. In 1965 Art Blakey discovered him at a jam session at the Village Vanguard and he played with Blakey's Jazz Messengers for some months, before he became a member of the Charles Lloyd Quartet and the Miles Davis band. His own band featured Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman. In the early 1970s he started to give solo performances and could fascinate a mass audience with his free piano improvisations. He treated the piano like a living creature, crouching or standing in front of it and coaxing strange sounds from it by stroking the strings, kicking the pedals and attacking the keyboard I read somewhere caracterizing one of his concerts. The solo concert in Köln became one of his most important recordings for ECM with lenghtly improvisations under difficult conditions, like a bad sounding piano. If you have the opportunity play this recording and give it a chance.
I found a fragment of a solo piano concert, an encore, of Keith Jarret at a 1984 Tokyo concert. Enjoy it.
Ik vond een fragment van een toegift tijdens een solo-optreden uit 1984 in Tokyo. Genieten maar. !
