Noites Cariocas

A few weeks ago I got a message from Fernando Gelbard, who is, except a great admirer of the music of Oscar Aleman, also a choro fan. He shared with me three versions of the great tune Noites Cariocas, composed by Jacob do Bandolim.

Noites Cariocas, which means Cariocan Nights, was composed by Jacob do Bandolim in 1957. It became a standard in choro music and it is nowadays on the repertoire of every choro band. The tune is also strongly related to Jacob do Bandolim, like Tico-Tico No Fuba which belongs to Zequinha de Abreu and Carinhoso to Pixinguinha. Remember that playing choro music is a social event. A rodas de choro is a meeting of musicians, who want to play together, and sit in a circle, so they can see each other and make eye contact if necessary. When the musicians want to play, one of the solo instruments starts playing ( the clarinet or bandolim) and the other instruments fill in. If you have an instrument and you like to join the roda de choro, do so - that are some unwritten rules.

It will be clear that in these spontanious improvisations, well known tunes, like Noites Cariocas are used - tunes every participant, skilled or starter, can use as a steppingstone for their musical interactions. In fact this kind of improvisations have the same roots as jazz music and that's what I like in choro music.

Fernando pointed me to three fragments - I will share two of them. You'll see Yamandu Costa and Armandinho in duet and Armandinho and Raphael Rabello playing Noites Cariocas. The third fragment I found and is played by a young guitar player and simply named himself, unpretentious, Eu, which means Me or I His name could be Ederson Moares, as he posted the fragment.

Een paar weken geleden kreeg ik een berichtje van Fernando Gelbard, die, behalve een groot liefhebber van de muziek van Oscar Aleman, zichzelf ook omschrijft als een fan van choromuziek. Hij stuurde me drie filmfragmenten van het nummer Noites Cariocas, geschreven door de Braziliaanse componist en bandolimspeler Jacob do Bandolim.

Noites Cariocas werd in 1957 door Jacob do Bandolim geschreven en het werd één van de bekendste choronummers. Het nummer is terug te vinden in het repertoire van elke choro band. Het nummer hoort bij Jacob do Bandolim zoals Tico-Tico No Fuba hoort bij Zequinha de Abreu en Carinhoso bij Pixinguinha. Bedenk dat het spelen van choro een sociaal gebeuren is. Tijdens een zogenaamde rodas de choro komen muzikanten bij elkaar en maken samen muziek. Ze zitten dan in een kring zodat ze elkaar goed kunnen zien en oogcontact kunnen maken. Eén van de soloinstrumenten, zoals de klarinet of de bandolim, begint en de andere instrumenten vullen dan hun deel in. Als je een instrument hebt en je vindt een plaatsje in de kring, dan speel je gewoon mee. Dat zijn enkele van de ongeschreven afspraken die gelden bij een rodas de choro.

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat bekende nummers als Noites Cariocas vaak als kapstok gebruikt worden, omdat iedereen ze kent. De manier van muziek maken en improviseren lijkt erg op die in de jazz en heeft in feite dezelfde wortels. Daarom mag ik graag naar deze muziek luisteren.

Fernando stuurde me drie fragmenten met het nummer Noites Cariocas in de hoofdrol, van waar ik er twee uitzocht. Yamandu Costa en Armandinho spelen in duet in het eerste fragment. In het tweede zien we Armandinho en Raphael Rabello. Het derde fragment wordt gespeeld door iemand die zich, heel bescheiden, Eu noemt, wat Ik betekent in het Portugees. Zijn naam is ( waarschijnlijk) Ederson Moares.
