Martin Müller obit

On the 16th of July 2007, early in the morning, Martin Juan "Tino" Müller passed away in Buenos Aires, in consequence of a pneumonia. Martin Müller was one of the greats in traditional Jazz, a cornet player, band-leader, producer, founder of the famous Porteña Jazz Band, and unfailing worldwide promoter of OKOM ( Our Kind Of Music = Traditional Jazz).
In the Netherlands Martin Müller was known as the leader of the Porteña Jazz Band. This band was founded in the mid 1960s directed by Ignacio Romero, before Martin Müller became the director, and became one of the most important traditional jazz bands of South America. At first they played in the pure new orleans style - dixieland - music, but later they concentrated on the music of the big bands of the 1930s, like the music of Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson and the McKinney's Cotton Pickers. The band toured all over South America and performed at traditional jazz festivals in Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Wales, The Netherlands and Switzerland. Between the mid 70s and the early 80s the band, directed by Martin Müller, played several times during the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival in Breda (The Netherlands) and a lot of people wil remember this great orchestra for these concerts. They made a lot of records that were released during the festivals made by Spronk - Breda and some of you might remember their tune Salute to Breda, specially made to express their feeling for this festival.
In July 2005 the orchestra celebrated its 40th birthday. The passing away of Martin Müller, whose name is so close related with this great orchestra, was sad news. I remember him for his enthusiastic emails, the last one were his season greetings in January this year, he sent me concerning our common passion, the Argentine guitar player Oscar Aleman. He liked the music of Oscar Aleman very much and was pleased with the El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project.
In remembrance to his music and band I will share some great film fragments of some 1990s performances of this Portena Jazz Band. I'm sure he'd liked it.

Op 16 juli 2007, vroeg in de morgen, overleed in Buenos Aires, Martin Juan "Tino" Müller tengevolge van een longontsteking, Martin Müller was één van de grootten in de traditionele jazz, kornet speler, bandleider, producer en mede oprichter van de Porteña Jazz Band en ambassadeur voor de Oude Stijl Jazz. In Nederland kennen we Martin Müller vooral als leider van de Porteña Jazz Band. Deze band werd opgericht midden jaren zestig en geleid door door Ignacio Romero, voordat Martin Müller de leiding overnam. Het werd de belangrijkste oude stijl jazz band van Zuid Amerika. In het begin speelden ze vooral de traditionele new orleans stijl en dixieland, maar later legden ze zich toe op de muziek van de grote big bands uit de jaren dertig, zoals die van Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson en de McKinney's Cotton Pickers. De band reisde rond door heel Zuid Amerika en trad op tijdens jazzfestivals in Spanje, Frankrijk, Italië, België, Duitsland, Wales, Nederland en Zwitserland. Velen zullen zich nog de concerten herinneren tijdens het Oude Stijl Jazz Festival in Breda. De band speelde eind jaren zeventig - begin jaren tachtig verschillende keren tijdens dit festival. Ze maakten hier een aantal platen, die tijdens het festival verschenen, uitgebracht door Spronk - Breda. Wie herinnert zich niet hun ode aan Breda, getiteld Salute to Breda, speciaal opgenomen voor het festival In juli 2005 vierde het orkest zijn 40 jarig bestaan. Het overlijden van Martin Müller, wiens naam zo verbonden blijft met het orkest, was droevig nieuws. Ik herinner me zijn enthousiaste emails die hij af en toe stuurde, de laatste was met oud en nieuw dit jaar, waarin hij onze gemeenschappelijke passie voor de muziek van Oscar Aleman deelde. Hij was verheugd dat de muzikale nalatenschap van Oscar Aleman aandacht kreeg in ons zgn. El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project. ( De herontdekking van Oscar Aleman).
Ter nagedachtenis aan Martin Müller en zijn muziek heb ik een aantal filmfragmenten gevonden waarin zijn band begin jaren negentig te zien en te horen is. Ik weet zeker dat hij dat prachtig gevonden zou hebben.
