Adriaan Jaeggi - De Tol van de Roem
Some days ago we enjoyed a small trip to Luxembourg, walking by feet through the Ardennes mountains, clambering over rocks, panoramic views,a good bed and good meals. No day-to-day worries, no work under stress, no web log ( thanks Jo you hold the fort ), no music, no jazz, .......... in other words: time for a good book.
There are but few novels about jazz in the Dutch language. Last year I read Swingkoning, a compilation of short stories by Jules Deelder and the year before that, while visiting the Jazz Convention in Copenhagen, the appropiate title Jazz In De Oostzee, written by Bob Rigter. This time I read De Tol van de Roem by Adriaan Jaeggi. It tells the story about a trumpet player who founds a band with some friends, named The Mondo Pacific Band, that becomes popular. They become famous and draw full houses. But then the trumpet player falls in love with the wife of one of the other band members and this secret love affair makes that he has to make a choice. Being a jazz musian himself, Adriaan Jaeggi knows where he is writing about and I liked the fragments where he describes their tour to Damascus - Syria, as it brings me some points of recognition.
This De Tol van de Roem is the debut novel of Adriaan Jaeggi. It was published in 1995. Adriaan Jaeggi, born in 1963, learned to play several instruments, like the cornet, the flute, tuba and trombone, his major instrument. As a trombone player he is still active in a salsaband ( Tipico Tampoco ) and his own group Prozak Kwartet. Since his debut roman he wrote several books and poems and even became the official poet of Amsterdam. He is a columnist for several magazines. As far as I know, only one book was translated in German, Held van Beroep ( Held von Beruf ). His last publication is titled Tromboneliefde, a book I also want to read. We keep in touch !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
