Blue Note

Thanks to Jerry I was able to see the Blue Note documentary made by Julian Benedikt last night. This documentary shows the history of the Blue Note label.
Last week I took a magazine from the Dutch Mediamarkt titled Mediazine, Lifestyle & entertainment, filled with new gadgets, with an article titled Blue Note bezig aan derde jeugd ( Blue Note in its third youth. ) by Ed Hoogeveen.
In 1938 Blue Note was founded by two immigrants from Germany - Alfred Lion and Frank Wolff. They started to record, from their own budgets, sessions with musicians like Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis. These 78rpm records where the beginning of a great record label with the white and blue label ( the first labels were yellow and blue)
In the 1950s and 1960s musicians, who played the new music, were allowed to record it, although no-one could guarantee that the records would sell. For Alfred Lion and Frank Wolff sales figures were not very important. The musicians got all freedom to record their music in the Rudy Van Gelder studios, in fact the living room of his parents, in Hackensack NJ. There they could rehearse and play their beautiful music, well recorded, as Rudy Van Gelder is a skilled audio engineer.
Most now famous jazz musicians from the 1950s and 1960s have recorded for Blue Note and making a list should mean that I would forget to mention a lot of them. Thanks to the pictures of Frank Wolff, like Jimmy Smith's above, all sessions have been saved on photo and the recordings are still avaliable in a great midpriced reissues series called The Rudy Van Gelder edition and the Connoisseur CD Series.

Dankzij Jerry kon ik de Blue Note documentaire gemaakt door Julian Benedikt gisteren weer eens bekijken. Deze documentaire belicht de geschiedenis van het Blue Note label.
Afgelopen week nam ik ook in de Mediamarkt hun promotieblad Mediazine, Lifestyle & entertainment, mee, gevuld met hebbedingen en electronische snufjes, waarin een artikel stond getiteld: Blue Note bezig aan derde jeugd ( Ed Hoogeveen. )
Blue Note werd in 1938 opgericht door twee Duitse immigranten Alfred Lion en Frank Wolff. Ze begonnen platen op te nemen en te verspreiden, betaald uit eigen zak. Hun eerste opnamen waren met Albert Ammons en Meade Lux Lewis. Deze 78-toeren platen waren het begin van een gigantische reeks fantastische Blue Note jazzplaten met het bekende blauw-witte label ( de eerste labels waren blauw-geel) In de vijftiger en zestiger jaren, toen nieuwe muziekstromingen in de jazz ontstonden gaven Alfred Lion en Frank Wolff muzikanten de gelegenheid om hun opnamen te maken. zonder dat ze zich druk maakten om verkoopcijfers. De musici krgen alle vrijheid en namen hun platen op bij de toen nog jonge geluidstechnicus Rudy Van Gelder in de huiskamer van zijn ouders in Hackensack New Jersey.
De meeste grote namen uit de jaren vijftig en zestig uit de jazzscene hebben voor Blue Note opnamen gemaakt en als ik die zou noteren hier, dan zou iedereen wel musici kunnen noemen die er niet in staan; dus maak ik geen lijst. Dankzij het feit dat Frank Wolff alle sessies fotografeerde (zoals Jimmy Smith hier boven) en de hoezen schitterend ontworpen werden zijn deze platen prachtige documenten geworden. Een uitgebreide serie heruitgaven in de Rudy Van Gelder edition en de Connoisseur CD series zorgen ervoor dat we nu nog steeds deze juweeltjes kunnen beluisteren.

The first one, let's say the period of Lion and Wolff ended in 1967 when the label was sold to Liberty Records.
