Sommige concerten blijven je bij, zoals dat van het Roditi, Ignatzek, Rassinfosse Trio - een driemansterke formatie, dat in 2004 erg veel indruk maakte tijdens een optreden in het Terneuzense Porgy en Bess ( niet te verwarren met haar Oostenrijkse naamgenoot, die overigens, volgens Roditi, niet swingt - daarvoor moet je in Terneuzen zijn). Op 17 oktober 2004 stond dit trio op het podium in Porgy en Bess: Claudio Roditi, Klaus Ignatzek en Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. Goed nieuws dus, toen bekend werd dat ze opnieuw zouden aantreden.

Het concert van het Roditi-Ignatzek-Rassinfosse Trio in Porgy en Bess werd gehouden op zondagmiddag 18 oktober 2009, als onderdeel van een vierweekse tour met 22 concerten langs acht verschillende landen.

Claudio Roditi, werd geboren in Rio de Janeiro ( nobody is perfect ( = niemand is volmaakt) was zijn commentaar) in mei 1946. Hij begon als zesjarige piano te spelen ( en bongo) en in de toegift van het optreden, Jobim's The Girl from Ipanema, ( concert vindt hij een te beladen woord) liet hij horen, dat nog niet verleerd te zijn. Toen hij tien was, begon hij trompet te spelen. Als jongvolwassene speelde hij in verschillende studiobands in Brazilië, voordat hij, begin jaren zeventig, naar de VS reisde om te gaan studeren aan het beroemde Berklee conservatorium. Daar paste hij zich snel aan, aan de toen gedlende gewoonten van de jazzscene. When I arrived in the States I wore my best suit and a tie and within a few weeks I had my hair grown, wearing a leather jacket with fringes all over and that stuff, like a real hippie. ( = Toen ik arriveerde had ik mijn beste pak aan en en stropdas; na een paar weken liet ik mijn haar groeien en droeg ik zo'n leren vestje met franjes, als de echte hippie's. )

Hij heeft gespeeld met alle grootten en was aanwezig bij honderden plaatopnamen, zoals op één van zijn eerste commerciële uitgaven in de VS met Charlie Rouse en Ron Carter; beiden uitgegroeid tot grote namen in de jazz. Verder nam hij platen op met Herbie Mann, het Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra en Slide Hampton's Jazz Masters; met Paquito D' Rivera, Gary Bartz, Jim Hall, McCoy Tyner en Horace Silver. In de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw groeide hij uit tot een gewild trompettist, dankzij zijn frisse geluid, overgoten met die Brazilaanse "ting", die typische Zuid-Amerikaanse groove. Hij ontmoette op die manier Klaus Ignatzik, een Duitse pianist uit Oldenburg.

Hun eerste plaat samen was het Timeless album Don't Stop It met de Klaus Ignatzek Group featuring Claudio Roditi, opgenomen in Bremen mei 1987. Rond diezelfde tijd nam bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse ook platen op met het Klaus Ignatzek Trio acc. Anca Parghel, een Roemeense jazzzangeres, die tien maanden geleden in Timisoara overleed. Het Roditi-Ignatzik-Rassinfosse Trio, zoals we dat nu kennen, begon eind jaren tachtig als een kwintet. De plaat Eight Languages door het Klaus Ignatzik Quintet refereert aan de acht talen die in deze band gesproken werd. We spraken Engels en Portugees, Vlaams en Frans, Duits, Italiaans ( Gustavo Bergalli), Zweeds en Deens (Leroy Lowe), legde Jean-Louis Rassinfosse uit. Als trio duurde het tot mei 2004 voordat ze hun eerste plaat in Brussel opnamen ( en wat voor één), getiteld Light in the Dark. Drie ervaren muzikanten, die al bijna vijfentwintig jaar samen spelen - dat moet wel een hecht team zijn.

In de eerste set bracht het trio een aantal nummers van hun laatste album, Beyond Question, zoals Early Hours, Pleasant Journey, beide composities van Ignatzek en een nummer, dat aangekondigd werd als een compositie gemaakt door Ignatzek in samenwerking met Johann Sebastian Bach in eigen persoon: Change of Air ( een bewerking van Bach's Air).

Claudio Roditi, die ook heel wat composities op zijn naam heeft staan ( Why are you playing all those originals, Mr. Roditi ( = Waarom speelt U toch al die bekende nummers, meer Roditi) vroeg iemand hem eens. Why? Because someone has to play my tunes ( = Waarom? Iemand moet toch mijn nummers spelen?)), ontpopte zich als een begenadigd entertainer tussen de nummers door. Hij vertelde over de jaren zeventig in de VS, toen veel jazzmuzikanten verslaafd waren aan verdovende middelen ( Sorry, which way was I going? ( = Sorry, welke kant liep ik op?)), verhalen over Rony, een vrouw uit New Jersey, die de boekingen verricht voor een jazzclub daar en naar wie hij een nummer vernoemd heeft, Blues for Rony, maar ook moppen zoals die over de paus en de pizzakoerier ( ........? sorry, had je er maar bij moeten zijn).

In het nummer Blues for Rony Jean-Louis demonstreerde wat een geweldig bassist hij is op zijn vijfsnarige (!) bas ( Waarom? Ik heb toch ook vijf vingers!), die hij overal mee naar toe neemt ( Als ik met het vliegtuig ga neem ik mijn Van Zalingebas mee; die is nu een collectors item). Die vijfsnarige bas geeft hem de mogelijkheid tot een gigantisch bereik ( van lage b tot een hoge c). In zijn solo vlecht hij, schijnbaar moeiteloos, een tiental andere thema's, wat het tot een genoegen maakte ernaar te luisteren.

Het lijkt wel op een reis in de tijd, verzuchtte Jean-Louis in de pauze terwijl hij rondkijkt in Porgy en Bess, of er niets is veranderd. Jean-Louis trad hier bijna 25 jaar geleden op met Chet Baker, tot diep in de nacht, in een legendarisch concert met o.a. Philip Catherine. In de tweede set speelde het trio o.a. nummers van hun eerste CD, zoals het titelnummer Light in the Dark, een compositie van Ignatzek en nummers als Love Dance. Het fantastische optreden werd afgesloten met een vocale versie van The Girl from Ipanema, wat weer eens duidelijk maakte, dat hij, behalve een groot trompettist ook een aangename stem heeft. Hij verraste het publiek met een pianosolo voor drie-handen ( trois-mains?) ( twee van Klaus en één van hem), unisono meegefloten - Wat een man !!

Het was jammer dat maar zo weinig mensen de deur van Porgy en Bess hadden kunnen vinden. Deze drie muzikanten, vrienden, die elk jaar hun agenda's naast elkaar leggen en een aantal weken samen optreden, gaven je het gevoel dat ze speciaal voor jou gekomen waren, om hun muziek met jou te delen - een instelling waaraan heel wat musici een voorbeeld kunnen nemen. Dit concert kan in ieder geval bijgeschreven worden in de rij "memorabele concerten" van meer dan 50 jaar Porgy en Bess

I don't think we ever slept here in a hotel - I think we should do that next time - having some nice seafood ( = Volgens mij hebben we hier nog nooit overnacht - dat moeten we de volgende keer maar eens doen - lekker mosselen eten).(Claudio Roditi). En dan opweg richting Oldenburg, Noord Duitsland; een rit van meer dan vijf uur.......

Some concerts will be remembered - one of these was a performance by the Roditi, Ignatzek, Rassinfosse Trio - a three man group that impressed me in 2004 at the Dutch Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( no, not to be mixed up with that Austrian one, which doesn't swing like the Dutch Porgy en Bess, to quote mr. Roditi himself). On the 17th of October 2004 these three men: Claudio Roditi, Klaus Ignatzek and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse performed at the club’s stage at the Noordstraat in Terneuzen. So it was great news to learn that these men would return exactly 5 years and one day later.

The concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club, the 18th of October, 2009, by the Roditi-Ignatzek-Rassinfosse Trio was part of their European tour 2009 - a one month tour, with 22 concerts (!) in eight different countries.

Claudio Roditi, was born in Rio de Janeiro ( nobody is perfect was his comment) in May 1946. He started to play the piano at the age of six and he demonstrated in the encore, the last tune of the concert, in the Jobim standard Girl from Ipanema that he still can play it, and when he was ten he picked up the trumpet. He worked for some times as a studio musician in Brazil before he came to the States to study at the Berklee School of Music early 1970s. He quickly integrated with the local jazz scene: When I arrived in the States I wore my best suit and a tie and within a few weeks I had my hair grown, wearing a leather jacket with fringes all over and that stuff, like a real hippie.

He performed with numerous musicians and was present at hundreds of recording sessions with names like: Charlie Rouse and Ron Carter ( some of his earliest records in 1976 were with a group featuring these two giants); Herbie Mann, the Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra and Slide Hampton's Jazz Masters; Paquito D' Rivera, Gary Bartz, Jim Hall, McCoy Tyner and Horace Silver. In the 1980s he became a sought after trumpet player thanks to his lively frontline sound, that Brazilian Ting and so he met Klaus Ignatzek.

Their first recording together was the Don't Stop It Timeless album by the Klaus Ignatzek Group featuring Claudio Roditi, recorded in Bremen (Germany) May 1987. Around that same date Jean-Louis Rassinfosse recorded with the Klaus Ignatzek Trio accompanying Anca Parghel, a Romanian jazz vocalist who passed away in Timisoara 10 months ago. The Roditi-Ignatzik-Rassinfosse Trio, started in the late 1980s as a quintet; the album Eight Languages by this Klaus Ignatzik Quintet referred to the eight languages the members spoke, Jean-Louis explained: We spraken Engels en Portugees, Vlaams en Frans, Duits, Italiaans ( Gustavo Bergalli), Zweeds en Deens (Leroy Lowe) (= We could speak English and Portuguese, Flemish and French, German, Italian, Danish and Swedish.). As a trio they recorded their first album Light in the Dark in Brussels, May 2004. Three skilled musician, playing together for almost twenty five years- that must be a solid team ............

During the first set the trio brought some tracks from their latest album, Beyond Question, like Early Hours, Pleasant Journey, both Ignatzek composition and a co-production between Ignatzek and Johann Sebastian Bach himself, a new arrangement of Bach's Air, surprised the audience ( Change of Air).

Claudio Roditi turned out to be a great entertainer on stage, telling stories about the period that drugs (LSD) and jazz were a solid team, jokes about the pope and the pizza delivery boy and about tunes to perform, like Blues for Rony, about a New Jersey producer of the same name he likes very much.

In this last tune of the first set the audience learned that Jean-Louis is a great bass player on his 5-string double bass ( Waarom is vijf snaren gebruik? Wel, omdat ik vijf vingers heb)( = Why I use a five-string double bass? Well, because I have five fingers), which gives him the possibility to play and extensive range of notes, between a low B up to a high C. Als ik met het vliegtuig ga, neem ik altijd mijn Van Zalinge bas mee, een collector's item ondertussen. ( = When I have to fly I always take my Van Zalinge bass - a collector's item now). In his solo he mixed, seemingly with ease, dozens of fragments from other tunes. A great bass player – a pleasant to listen to.

Het lijkt wel op een reis in de tijd, Jean-Louis said during the break, observing the club, of er niets is veranderd ( = It looks like a trip back in time - nothing seems to have been changed). Jean-Louis performed in this same club, almost 25 years ago, with Chet Baker in a legendary concert featuring Philip Catherine and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. In the second set, Claudio Roditi, who promised to come back to Terneuzen, having a hotel here and eating sea food, opened with the tune Light in the Dark, the Ignatzek composition of their first album as a trio and tunes like Love Dance. They finished the performance ( I hate the word concert, Claudio said) with a vocal version of Girl from Ipanema, which learns that he has a great voice singing the Brazilian standards and he surprised the audience with a whistle and a three-hands duet solo at the piano with Klaus Ignatzek.

It was a pity that but few people had found the Porgy en Bess Jazz club. These three friends, gathering each year for a short tour, enjoyed playing together and loved to share their passion for jazz with the audience. Nobody's Perfect, seems to be Roditi's motto - but this trio proved in Porgy en Bess that they could serve an almost perfect performance. Thanks for that! Another memorable concert in the more then 50 years history of Porgy en Bess.
