Deze week is het 111 jaar geleden dat één van de grootste bandleiders, pianisten en componisten geboren werd in Washington DC : Edward Kennedy Ellington, beter bekend als de Duke. Tachtig jaar geleden trad hij op in de Cotton Club in Harlem ( NYC) en kreeg hij met zijn orkest, The Cotton Club Orchestra, steeds meer bekendheid. In dat 12-mans orkest zaten musici als Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Juan Tizol, Harry Carney en Barney Bigard, die naam zouden maken in het orkest.

Duke Ellington (1899-1974)

Er waren in die tijd heel wat bands in Harlem, maar dat van de Duke was ongetwijfeld het beste - zelfs "beter" dan dat van Fletcher Henderson ( maar dat mocht er ook zijn !!). De populariteit van dit orkest was vooral terug te voeren op het feit dat de Duke een geweldig goede componist was, die zijn arrangementen schreef voor de musici in zijn band persoonlijk en geen nummers componeerde, die door elk orkest gespeeld zouden kunnen worden. Elk lid van het orkest kon zich zo ontwikkelen tot vakkundige solisten. De CD Harlem Jazz 1925-1937 op het Audio Park label geeft een fraai tijdsbeeld van deze periode met de orkesten van Ellington en Henderson.

Luister maar eens naar een fragment uit de film Black and Tan, gemaakt in augustus 1929 en uitgebracht in december van dat jaar, dat begint met een duo van Duke aan de piano, die Arthur Whetsol een nieuw thema aanleert, gespeeld in de zgn. "jungle style". Het tweede deel komt uit de film Check and Double Check uit 1930. Het nummer heet Old Man Blues. Wat een geweldige muziek !!

Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra

In 1927 werd Irving Mills zijn manager en impressario; hij zou Duke Ellington op de kaart zetten als internationaal beroemd artiest. Hij werd een vermogend man o.a. dankzij de vele composities, die hij kocht en op zijn naam kon zetten. Ook organiseerde hij honderden opnamesessies voor radio en plaat en daardoor kon het orkest van Duke Ellington begin jaren dertig blijven groeien in populariteit waar andere bands de broekriem moesten aanhalen vanwege de crisis. Helaas (!) zong Mills ook zo nu en dan tijdens deze opnamesessies. In 1930 verhuisde Duke Ellington definitief van Washington naar New York City, the place to be in die dagen. Hij ging wonen aan de 381 Edgecombe Ave., apt. 142, samen met zijn moeder Daisy ( die hier geen last van haar astma meer had (!)), zijn zus Ruth en zijn zoon Mercer. Zijn huwelijk met Edna was op een scheiding uitgelopen en Duke scharrelde met de knappe actrice Fredi Washington. Tijdens één van hun ruzies had Edna Duke met een scheermes gesneden. Edna cut him ..... ( = Edna sneed hem .....). He was living on Seventh Avenue somewhere around there, in one of those apartment buildings ...( = Hij woonde toen ergens in de buurt van de 7th Avenue, in één van die appartementengebouwen.). That big scar on the side of his face? His wife did that to him .... (= Dat litteken op zijn gezicht? Dat heeft zijn vrouw gedaan!) vertelt Barney Bigard. Zijn zoon Mercer herinnert zich over dit incident: He probably hadn't come home for two or three days and he and mother got into a tremendous fight, in the course of which she got hold of this knife and slashed across the face ( = Hij zal wel weer een paar nachten weggebleven zijn en dat mondde uit in een geweldig gevecht, waarbij zij dat mes te pakken kreeg en uithaalde over zijn wang) ( Reminiscing in Tempo (Stuart Nicholson) p.101).

De band van Ellington werd beroemd door de zgn. jungle style, a type of jazz that incorporated pseudo-African musical effects - especially pounding tom-toms, unusual harmonies, "primitive" scales ( usually pentatonic and whole-tone), and muted, growling bass lines ( = een jazzstijl, dat pseudo-Afrikaanse muzikale effecten toevoegde, zoals tom-toms,ongebruikelijke harmonieën, "primitieve" toonsoorten ( meestal pentatonische toonladders em hele tonen) en gestopte, growling baslijnen) ( Mark Tucker in de New Grove Dictionary of Jazz). Het volgende fragment is de afsluiting van de film Black and Tan, waarin je de growling jungle style mooi kunt herkennen.

In 1930 maakte hij tientallen opnamen, dankzij Irving Mills, die hen soms tweemaal per week de opnamestudio in trok voor opnamen op gerenomeerde labels als Victor, Okeh ( Harlem Footwarmers), Brunswick (Jungle Band), maar ook, onder verschilende schuilnamen, op budgetplaten als Hit of the Week ( Harlem Hot Chocolates), Conqueror ( Ten Black Berries), Diva en Clarion ( Mills' Ten Black Berries). Het eerstgenoemde label, Hit of the Week, bracht twee 78-toeren platen uit, op karton, die als "Hits" van de week in de krantenkiosken verkocht werden. Het zijn nu gezochte verzamelaarsobjecten en binnenkort krijgen ze een plaatsje in het zgn. Durium80 project op de Hit of the Week blog. Mis het niet !!

Duke Ellington's populariteit was 80 jaar geleden nog steeds groeiende .... Hoewel de Depresssie meedogenloos om zich heen sloeg en heel wat orkesten gereorganiseerd moesten worden of alles moesten aannemen om maar aan werk te komen, lijkt het de Duke tamelijk voor de wind te gaan, maar op het persoonlijk vlak was het niet allemaal rozengeur en maneschijn, gezien het litteken op Duke's wang. Keep Swinging belicht deze eerste maanden van 1930 op de dag nadat de Duke 111 jaar oud geworden zou zijn .... Mis het niet - vraag de wekelijkse nieuwbrief.

Today it is 111 years ago that bandleader, pianist and composer Edward Kennedy Ellington, better known as the Duke, was born in Washington DC. Eighty years ago, 1930, he performed at the Cotton Club in Harlem ( NYC) and his star was rising. His orchestra, labelled at The Cotton Club Orchestra, was a twelve-piece band, which featured great names like Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Juan Tizol, Harry Carney and Barney Bigard.

Duke Ellington (1899-1974)

There were a lot of jazz- and dance bands in Harlem during this period, but Duke's was the best of all - even "better" then Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra. The reasons was that Duke was a great composer, who made arrangements for the individual members of the band instead of making a generic charts that could be played by any orchestra. Each sidemen in the band developed in Duke's band developed into great soloists. The Audio Park album Harlem Jazz 1925-1937 brings a great tribute to this period.

Enjoy a fragment from the film Black and Tan, made in August 1929 and released December 1929, which starts with Duke at the piano and Arthur Whetsol on the trumpet, playing the growling, so-called "jungle style" on his instrument. The second part of the fragment is from the 1930 film Check and Double Check.(Old Man Blues) What a great band !!

Duke Ellington Cotton Club Orchestra

In 1927 Irving Mills became his manager and impresario. He would make the band into an international attraction. He became a wealthy man thanks to the numerous compositions in his name. Irving Mills organised numerous recording sessions and as most bands and musicians had a very tough time to make a living due to the Depression, it seemed that the Duke's popularity was still growing in 1930. In 1930 Duke Ellington moved permanently from Washington to New York City, the place to be in those days. He moved to 381 Edgecombe Ave., apt. 142, where he lived with his mother Daisy, his sister Ruth and his son Mercer. His marriage, late 1920s, with his wife Edna was not good and it seemed that Ellington had a relations with the beautiful actress Fredi Washington. During one of their fights Edna cut Ellington with a razor knife. Edna cut him ..... He was living on Seventh Avenue somewhere around there, in one of those apartment buildings ... that big scar on the side of his face? His wife did that to him .... Barney Bigard remembers. His band became famous because of the so-called jungle style music, a type of jazz that incorporated pseudo-African musical effects - especially pounding tom-toms, unusual harmonies, "primitive" scales ( usually pentatonic and whole-tone), and muted, growling bass lines ( Mark Tucker in the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz). Love to share with you the final scenes of Black and Tan, in which you can hear the growling jungle style very well.

In 1930 he made numerous recordings, thanks to Irving Mills, who organized recording sessions for all major record labels, like Victor, Okeh ( Harlem Footwarmers), Brunswick (Jungle Band), but also, with all kinds of pseudonyms, for budget labels like Hit of the Week ( Harlem Hot Chocolates), Conqueror ( Ten Black Berries) Diva and Clarion ( Mills' Ten Black Berries). The former, Sing, You Sinners (HOW 1045) and St. James Infirmary ( HOW 1046) by the Harlem Hot Chocolates were recorded 80 years ago and will be remembered at the DURIUM80 project next week when these two, now sought after, records were released, 80-years ago, at the news-stands in the major US cities - May 1930.

Although the Depression hit every American citizen and a lot of (dance) band leaders had to re-organize their orchestras or had to fight for gigs to make a living, it seems that he was doing well. Harlem Hot Chocolates

A few days ago I posted a contribution with a 1930 article and leaflet about the Hit of the week records. The leaflet refered to a Hit of the week record, played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates. I asked you to contact me what band was hidden behind that pseudonym. Several readers responded and Mike ( Salionas CA), Jerry (Amsterdam) and Howard (Baltimore MD) could name the correct band: Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.

What was the reason for this known black band to play under a pseudonym on a Hit of the week record? First of all we should remember that it was the time of the Great Depression. A lot of people lost all their money and so did the Duke. It was hard to generate income for his band members, as the public had to tighten its belts. It might be possible that the Duke had obligations to other record companies and that he needed this job on the side to get some extra income. On the other hand, Irving Mills, who was the vocalist and manager of the band, tried to promote the black Duke Ellington Orchestra to the white audiences. Mind that during this era the US still was a segregated country, with blacks and whites as two different groups of people, who lived together on an unequal base.The Hit of the week was a real white label, so making a record for Hit of the week, under the pseudonym of the Harlem Hot Chocolates ( which suggests that it was a black band performing) was a well-thought out promotion stunt. Maybe, Jerry, that's the reason they grin so much in the leaflet: You'll grim too, when you hear this blue number played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates.

Isn't it remarkable that there has been only one reissue of a Hit of the week recording by another 78rpm record label, although it was a real bootleg. The Biltmore record ( BM 1014 ) was released somewhere during the 1940s and contains the tune Sing You Sinners by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.
I love to show you the first appearance of Duke Ellington on film. In Black and Tan Fantasy of 1929, one year before the Harlem Hot Chocolates recordings.The film starts with the moment that Duke Ellington shows Arthur Whetsol his new composition Black and Tan fantasy. I think that's a great part; later it gets bogged down in dramatical effects. Hope you can handle it !!

Een paar dagen geleden maakte ik een bijdrage met een artikel uit een krant uit 1930 en een folder die verband hielden met de Hit of the week platen. Het foldertje refereerde aan een plaat, gemaakt door de Harlem Hot Chocolates. Ik maakte er toen een klein kwisje van: Welke band steekt er achter deze schulnaam? Ik kreeg verschillende reacties en Mike (Salinas Ca), Jerry (Amsterdam) en Howard (Baltimore MD) gaven het goede antwoord: Het Duke Ellington orkest.

Waarom maakte zo'n bekende zwarte band een opname onder een schuilnaam voor een Hit of the week plaat? Allereerst moet je bedenken dat de tijd toen deze plaat gemaakt werd volop in het teken stond van de grote Wall Street Crash, de periode van de Depressie. Veel mensen hadden al hun geld verloren, zo ook Duke Ellington. Het was moeilijk om geld te vinden om de leden van de band te betalen, aangezien het publiek de buikriem moest aanhalen. Het ligt voor de hand te veronderstellen dat Duke elke kans aangreep om opnamen te maken zelfs als dat betekende dat hij, wegens verplichtingen elders, niet onder eigen naam kon optreden. Aan de andere kant was Irving Mills, de zanger (helaas) en manager van de band, een gewiekst zakenman en promoter en hij probeerde in deze tijd de band te pluggen bij het blanke publiek. Bedenkt dat in die tijd in de VS nog een echte scheiding was tussen de twee bevolkingsgroepen, blank en zwart, en dat die twee groepen weliswaar samenwoonden, maar strikt gescheiden leefden. Aangezien de Hit of the week zo'n typisch blank label was, moet je wellicht deze opname zien in dat licht en was het meer een stunt van Mills. Misschien, Jerry, is dat de reden dat er zoveel gegrijnsd wordt in de tekst in het foldertje. You'll grin, too, when you hear this blue number played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates. ( Je zult ongetwijfeld ook moeten grijnzen als je dit nummer van de Harlem Hot Chocolates hoort )

Een vermeldenswaardig feit is verder, dat er slechts éénmaal in de geschiedenis van de Duriumplaat een heruitgave, zij het een illegale kopie, gemaakt werd op 78-toeren, namelijk op het Biltmore label ( BM 1014) ergens in de jaren veertig. Het bevat het nummer Sing You Sinners door Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.
Ik vind het leuk deze bijdrage af te sluiten met het eerste filmpje waarop Duke Ellington spelend te zien is. Het is de Black and Tan Fantasy uit 1929 , gemaakt als één van de eerste geluidsfilms, één jaar voor de opnamen voor Durium. Het mooiste deel is m.i. het begin waarin Duke zijn nieuwste compositie inoefent met Arthur Whetsol. Daarna vervalt de film in een typische dertiger jaren dramatiek, met Freddi Washington in de hoofdrol. Ik hoop dat je het kan hebben!!

Today two new 1930s contributions, send to me by Guido van Rijn, about the Hit of the week record. Both are from ca. April - May 1930 as the items refer to the Harlem Hot Chocolates recordings released in May 1930. The Hit of the week was released each week at news stands and the first article, New Phonograph Record to Sell for Fifteen Cents, explains this new kind of gadget. It suggests, that these records were for sale in Boston for the very first time around May 1930, and that might be correct, as the Hit of the week were released in New York City alone at its very beginning ( February 1930).

This is a leaflet, distributed early May 1930 that announces the new Hit of the week ( Hit of the week 1046 ) that contains the tune St. James Infirmary as played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates. Mind that nobody in this leaflet, nor in the article, tells what band actually was hidden behind that name.

Vandaag aandacht voor twee nieuwe vondsten uit 1930, die ik ontving van Guido van Rijn, over de Hit of the week plaat. Beide zijn uit april - mei 1930 aangezien ze gaan over de Harlem Hot Chocolates opnamen uitgebracht in mei 1930. Hit of the week platen waren wekelijkse uitgaven en het eerste artikel, New Phonograph Record to Sell for Fifteen Cents ( = Nieuwe gramofoonplaat te koop voor 15 cent), legt alles uit over dit nieuwe hebbeding. In het artikel wordt gesuggereerd dat de plaat in Boston nog helemaal nieuw is, en dat kan kloppen, want de eerste Hit of the week's werden in februari 1930 alleen nog maar in New York uitgebracht.
Dit is een strooibiljet of foldertje uitgegeven t.b.v. de introductie van de plaat St. James Infirmary gespeeld door de Harlem Hot Chocolates. (Hit of the week 1046). Opvallend is dat noch in het artikel noch in het strooibiljet verteld wordt welke band er achter deze naam schuil gaat.

Leuk om dit maar eens in de groep te gooien !!
