THE RAMBLERS: RECORDINGS FROM A POST-WAR BRUSSELS
Hans Koert

De Ramblers, het Ramblers Dansorkest, or in English The Ramblers Dance Orchestra, is one of the most famous Dutch dance orchestras from the last century. Doctor Jazz Magazine reissued some post-war recordings made in Brussels, when the band performed for the allied soldiers in Brussels. The Ramblers in Brussel (1945 - 1948) - Rue des Radis (DJ 007 )

In years of dance-going, I have heard and danced to the music of America's finest orchestras, but it is my opinion that your orchestra plays the most danceable musical arrangements I have ever heard. Your "presentations" are the equal of the superior arrangements of Fred Waring's orchestra, which plays fine choral arrangements but does not play dance music. ( Edward F. Kennedy, special advisor of the American Military Service in Bavaria (Germany)) in a leter to Theo Uden Masman, the leader of the band (ca. 1949) ( in Tuney Tunes April 1949)

Founded in the mid 1920s out of the Resonance Seven the Original Ramblers developed into one of the leading dance bands in Europe before the second World War. The band became known for its Decca recordings with great jazz artists like Coleman Hawkins in 1935 and 1937.
The rhythm section of The Ramblers: f.l.t.r.: Wim Sanders - Theo Uden Masman - Jac. Pet - Kees Kranenburg ( in Tuney Tunes April 1949)
The Ramblers Dansorkest was one of the regular radio bands for the V.A.R.A. networks and played, except jazzy dance tunes, also popular music which brought it some great hits like the Zuiderzee Blues and song like Wie Is Loesje? or Meneer De Baron Is Niet Thuis. During the Second World War the band continued to play its music, not only in The Netherlands, but also in Belgium. Thanks to the pre-war radio programs, the music of the Ramblers became very popular in Belgium ( two members of the band were actually Belgian: Marcel Thielemans and André Van Der Ouderaa) and in 1942 the band was invited for a series of concerts in the major cities of the country, like Brussels and Antwerp. These concerts were a great success!

A year later a new tour was scheduled and Decca invited the band to several recording sessions, where they recorded tunes like Au Revoir ( = Farewell Blues - its signature theme for a long time); Chasse á Coure ( = Hindernisrennen - better known as Steeple Chase) and Orient Express. When the war was over, now 65 years ago, the Ramblers were invited to play for a two month gig in Brussels in The Officers Club situated in the former Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit - for years a popular club in Brussels founded by Jean Omer. I wrote about it before when I talked about Jean Robert's career. Part of the Ramblers Orchestra - f.l.t.r.: Bert Grijs - Pierre Wijnobel - Rinus v. d. Broek - Marcel Thielemans - Ferry Barendse ( photo: Tuney Tunes 63 ( April 1949))
When the two months gig was over they continued to play for the US soldiers in Brussels around Rue Des Radis, a street in the Brussels entertainment centre. The Ramblers Orchestra made its first records after the period of German occupation in Brussels for Decca and these records are now reissued in a great album entitled The Ramblers In Brussel - Rue des Radis, published by the Doctor Jazz Magazine.

When its leader, Theo Uden Masman returned to The Netherlands October 1945 he had to visit the so-called Eereraad Voor De Kleinkunst, a comité to clear and punish musicians who had performed or collaborated for the Germans; The Ramblers weren't allowed to play in public for a few months. A Tuney Tune article, a Dutch popular music magazine from April 1949 reads about this period: Over de verrichtingen tijdens de bezettingsjaren en haar onaangename nasleep ( zuivering!) is destijds in de pers veel aandacht besteed, zodat we hierover kort kunnen zijn. ( = About its activities during the German occupation and the unpleasant effects ( the clearance), have been extensively discussed in the press – so let’s make it short). Due to these clearances in its homeland, the Ramblers could perform more easily in Belgium in 1945, the first post-war year en zich enigzinds (konden) uitleven in Amerikaanse muziek ( = and could play the US repertoire). Paul Acket, who wrote the Tuney Tunes article, then a modest music journalist, later a famous producer, labels the concerts of the Ramblers in Le Boeuf sur le toit for the US Officers Club in post-war Brussels as one of its best: De eerste na-oorlogse triomfen oogstten Masman en zijn orkest in ditzelfde land en wel in de Amerikaanse officiersclub "Le Boeuf sur le toit" in Brussel. Its first public performance in The Netherlands was on the 1st of January 1946 at Tivoli in Utrecht in the centre of the country and soon after that, the weekly broadcasts for the VARA-radio started.
The Ramblers ( ca. 1949) ( photo: Tuney Tunes 63 ( April 1949))
On the album you can find two dozens of tracks - all recorded in Brussels ( except the bonus track: Rue des Radis, which was recorded in Het Hof van Holland in Hilversum, June 1946) between 1945 and 1948. Most of these recordings haven't been reissued up to now and were only available in Belgium in the Decca Swing Series - they belong to the best post-war recordings made by this famous dance band. After these recordings in Brussels the Ramblers Dance Orchestra continued to play for the allied forces, like concerts at the Haus der Kunst in Munich and radio broadcasts like Bouncin in Bavaria for the A.F.Networks in Munich at five o' clock in the afternoon. Its signature tune became the Ramblers recording of Bouncin' in Bavaria.

The original material was restored by Harry Coster, Holland's best audio engineer, specialized in 78rpm recordings ( he was also one of the team responsable for the sound restoration of the Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia (1933-1944) 10 CD-set ) and Skip Voogd was responsible for the extensive informative liner notes.
A historical document that should be in every serious collection. You can get your copy at the next Doctor Jazz Dag in Wageningen ( in the centre of The Netherlands) on Saturday the 17th of April 2010 or at its website - information: ramblers@doctorjazz.nl

The Ramblers: recordings from a post-war Brussels ( English)

Maarrr ...... wij komen terug!
DE RAMBLERS: OPNAMEN UIT HET NAOORLOGSE BRUSSEL
Hans Koert

In years of dance-going, I have heard and danced to the music of America's finest orchestras, but it is my opinion that your orchestra ( = Theo Uden Masman's Ramblers) plays the most danceable musical arrangements I have ever heard. ) Your "presentations" are the equal of the superior arrangements of Fred Waring's orchestra, which plays fine choral arrangements but does not play dance music.

Pet - Kees Kranenburg ( in Tuney Tunes april 1949)

( Paul Acket in The Ramblers - still going strong) ( Tuney Tunes 63 ( april 1949)

OSCAR ALEMÁN100: HIS EUROPEAN CAREER
Hans Koert
On the 20th of February 2009 we'll commemorate the fact that Oscar Alemán, el Rey de la Guitarra Swing, as he is a labelled on one of the latest reissues, was born 100 years ago.
..........

The Moreira Sextet (ca. 1913)
This fact will be celebrated in Argentina, where he is still an icon of the Argentine popular music. You can read about that in the contribution: Oscar Alemán - 100 Años "Una Leyenda". In June 2008 the Legislatura de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, the local government of the city of Buenos Aires, placed a plaque in the entrance-hall of the apartment at Maipu no. 359 in Buenos Aires, where the great Maestro lived during the last decades of his live. During this ceremony his granddaughter Jorgelina and several colleagues played his music. I wrote about that event at the contribution Recognition for Oscar Aleman.

Les Loups: On the left Oscar Alemán - On the right Gaston Bueno Lóbo (ca. 1929)
Oscar Aleman was born on the 20th of February 1909 as the son of a Toba Indian from the El Chaco district and an Argentine father Jorge Aléman Moreira. As a small boy he had to earn money, together with his father and brothers and sisters (Carlos, Jorgelina and Juana) for his family with the Moreira Sextet, a vaudeville group that toured in Argentina and Brasil. Little Oscar was dancing, being labelled as El compeón del malambo (= The King of the Malambo).
Harry Flem(m)ing and his vaudeville group. Behind Fleming you can find Les Loups "inserted". ( ca. 1930)

When he was twelve years old his father committed suicide, when his mother died in Buenos Aires and the kids had to earn a living in the streets of Santos (Brasil). Oscar danced, became a prize fighter and could even save some money to buy himself a cavaquinho. He taught himself to play this instrument and, as he has said, the first tune he learned to play was titled O.A. 1926. Returned in Buenos Aires he became part of a duo with Gaston Bueno Lobo, who played the Dobro and Hawaiian guitar. They were rather successful with their duo Les Loups, or Los Lobos. Late 1920s they were even invited to join the Harry Flem(m)ing vaudeville groep.
Oscar Alemán in the garden of Jac Pet, guitar player of the Dutch Original Ramblers ( ca. 1933) (photo courtesy Ate van Delden)
They even made several recordings and were selected to join the Harry Fleming revue as the Hawaiian Guitarist on tour. The tour brought the duo in Europe, but in 1929, due to financial problems, the group of Harry Fleming was dismantled and Gaston and Oscar had to earn a living in the cafés in Madrid. Josephine Baker, the famous revue star, asked Oscar to join her Baker Boys. The Les Loups duo was broken and Gaston Bueno Lobo left Europe disillusioned. Oscar Aleman became an essential element in Josephine Baker's Baker Boys and, although no Josephine Baker biography mentions with more then five words Oscar Aleman, he became a close friend, an intimate. Although he was unable to read music, Oscar became the musical leader of the Baker Boys.A Dutch poster of a concert with Josephine Baker ( and Oscar of course) at Kunstmin in Dordrecht ( a city near Rotterdam ( ca 1934)
Svend Asmussen told me a few years ago, how Oscar managed this problem. When the Baker Boys had to play new tunes, he would hand out the sheet music to the musicians and slipped away unseen to the toilet. While the band started to practise, Oscar listened unnoticed to the music. When he came back, he sat down, put the music on his music stand and tapped his baton. A Dutch program for a Josephine Baker concert ( late 1930s)
In the Baker Boys he played the guitar, but on records that were made, he isn't clearly audible. Thanks to Harry Coster, a Dutch audio engineer, a
n airshot of a tune, recorded in a Josephine Baker concert somewhere in the Netherlands, has survived. The tune is Dein ist mein ganzes Herz and Josephine is the vocalist with Oscar Alemán playing the guitar. It's the only recording where you can hear clearly Oscar playing the guitar in a Baker Boys recording. This private recording isn't, of course, Oscar's first one, as he made more then a dozen records for Victor with Les Loups in Argentina. In the revues he played solo performances, but also accompanied Josephine and others, like Jean, Jack et Jo - a vaudeville group which featured Han Driessen, a Dutch violist, Jean Irace, a French guitar player and Enrique Juvet at the piano, originally from Switzerland.

Freddie Taylor and his Swing Men From Harlem ( ca. 1935). At the right Oscar Alemán.

Oscar toured with Josephine Baker and her Baker Boys along venues all along Europe and of course, also to the Netherlands. Ate van Delden has some photos from the Jac. Pet estate. Jac. Pet was the guitar player of the Original Ramblers and fascinated by the music of Oscar Alemán. He met Oscar in his house somewhere in The Netherlands. The photos show some snap-shots of Oscar in his garden early 1930s. Harry Lim (a Dutch journalist) with Oscar Alemán ( late 1930s)

Between the concerts and tours Oscar played in Paris with French artists and American jazz muscians like Gus Viseur, Louis Ferrari, Bill Coleman, Freddy Taylor and Frank "Big Boy" Goudy and also with Django Reinhardt of course. He was able to record with some of these musicians during his stay in Europe. Oscar Alemán (roght) at the so-called "Danish Jam Session" (December 1938) with Svend Asmussen (second from the right).

He was friends with Django Reinhardt - they performed during the same festivals, but, as far as I know, they never were playing together on stage. It is said, that Oscar sometimes replaced Django when he couldn't perform and there are some more stories about Oscar and Django, who can't be verified anymore. It is, of course a pity, that they never met in a recording studio. In 1938 he visited Copenhagen with the Josephine Baker revue and some members of the Baker Boys like Bibi Miranda, who was the drummer. The other musicians for the band were selected in Denmark; members of the Svend Asmussen Quartet - a promising young group in the Copenhagen jazz scene. When the show was over, Josephine left for Stockholm, the next stop of the tour, but Oscar and Bibi stayed in Copenhagen for some days and joined Svend, who invited them to be present at a recording session on the 5th of December. Both Oscar and Bibi joined the band during the recordings in a jam session which was later released on Danish HMV as a Danish Jam Session. Oscar played two solo tunes, he also performed on stage: Nobody's Sweetheart and Whispering.
A news paper photo from Oscar performing at the Zevende Jazzwereld Feest in Scheveningen ( the beach resort of The Hague. ( 1939) (photo: Nederlands Jazzarchief)
Both tunes were also part of a concert at the 7th Jazzwereld Feest in Scheveningen (near The Hague) in the Netherlands a half year later. Oscar played during these concerts with members of the Swing Papas and vocalist Annie Xhofleer. Later he would label this festival as one the happiest moments in his life.
Advertisement for the Zevende Jazz Wereld Feest (1939)
This small contribution about Oscar's career in Europe is just an excerpt from the complete story. If you visit
my online Oscar Alemán discography the records made in Europe tell their own story. Below this first contribution dedicated to Oscar Alemán's career before he settled in Argentina, you can find a selection of CDs on which some of these European recordings can be find. (to be continued)

You can find information about some concerts to be scedulded on the 20th of February 2009 at the Oscar Aleman Web Log. I hope I can share some photos from both concerts later. Thanks Jorgelina, Daniël, Luis and Waldo for your kind help.

Huize Poll and Coleman Hawkins

Huize Poll in de Bilt ( early 20th Century)

Some weeks ago I was asked for help to find out some information about Huize Poll, a hotel - dancing at the Bilt in the centre of Holland near the city of Utrecht. In 1938 Coleman Hawkins performed at this venue and Jelle van der Zee asked me where Coleman Hawkins lived during this period and if he slept in the neighbourhood of the venue where he had played.
Thanks to Jelle's questions some research started and with the help of Jan Brouwer of the Dutch Jazz Archive in Amsterdam some more information about that concert at Huize Poll came to light.
After the publication of
the first blog Jelly handed me some additional information too.

Part of the Kerst- en Nieuwjaarsagenda De Jazzwereld Dec. 1937

Hawkins returned to Holland after a tour abroad on the first on January 1938 and found a guesthouse in Utrecht, in the middle of the country.
He had to play at Huize Poll in De Bilt during that month with his trio ( Coleman Hawkins - Freddy Johnson - Maurice van Kleef ).
Johan Burgersdijk, now 92 years old, was a trombone player in the Utrecht Student Big Band The Rhythm Collegians, directed by Nol Stramrood. One of the members of that band was Lex De Booy, a trumpet player. Johan Burgerdijk remembers that they played at Tivoli, a venue in Utrecht at a dance meeting, where 1500 young people where gathered. The band alternated with The Ramblers, featuring Coleman Hawkins as a special guest.

Coleman Hawkins Trio

It might be possible that Johan Burgersdijk referred to this 3rd Harlem Night, organized by the Dutch Jazz Liga, organized at Tivoli on the 2nd of November 1935. At that concert Hawkins played with The Hot Mixers directed by Nico van Oostrum and this band alternated with The Undergraduates, a Utrecht student big-band with 13 members. The names of the members are unknown up to now.

Coleman Hawkins invited the musicians of the Rhythm Collegians, Johan Burgerdijk remembered, to join him when he would play at Huize Poll in De Bilt. Coleman Hawkins and his trio were booked for January 1938, and as far as I have found this was the only time they played at Huize Poll. It might be possible that the young musicians of that student band joined the trio during tis engagement. Johan Burgerdijk was not in Huize Poll during these concerts in January 1938, as he moved to the Dutch Indies the year before

Coleman Hawkins in front of The Hot Mixers ( Tivoli November 1935) (photo Herman Openneer)

While playing at Huize Poll, Hawkins was invited to play at the Dierentuin in The Hague at a Jazz Liga concert on the 12th of January 1938. This invitation, made by Ed Crommelin, chairman of the Dutch Jazz Liga, reached Hawkins in De Bilt a day before the concert.
He contacted Ed Crommelin on the 11th of January with a message that reads: As we will be engaged that night ( Wednesday 12 February) until 11:30, we can arrive in The Hague at one o' clock ready.
They agreed and, although Hawkins wanted a rather extensive amount of money ( 175 Dutch guilders), the performance was a success and 4000 people enjoyed the concert.
(Mind that a modal worker earned about 25 guilders a week )

In the night of Saturday 12 up to Sunday the 13th of April 1958 a heavy fire burns Huize Poll down!

Maybe Johan Burgerdijk can verify for us that he played at the 3rd Harlem Night at Tivoli in Utrecht as part of The Undergraduates, maybe a pseudonym for The Rhythm Collegians in November 1935. That would be great !! Maybe the picture, made during that concert with Coleman Hawkins in front of The Hot Mixers can be a good help.

Thanks Jan Brouwer for your kind support and Jelle Van Der Zee for you additional information !!

In my previous blog about this subject I posted two great film fragments of Coleman Hawkins playing.

Huize Poll in De Bilt ( begin 20ste eeuw)

Coleman Hawkins was gastspeler bij The Ramblers.

As we will be engaged that night ( woensdag 12 februari) until 11:30, we can arrive in The Hague at one o' clock ready.
